The story' of a divorced mother and her son, newly transplanted to a South- western Ontario "hick" town from the big city, "Oak - mount High" relied upon trotting out hokey sym- bolism and "gee -whiz" sentimentality. Mother Carol Webber, played by Susan Hogan, must deal with a small-town mentality when she learns the local high school's principal and most popular teacher, Harry Gibson, played by Thomas Peacocke, is preaching hatred against Jews. As if that isn't bad enough, Mom has to deal with a rebellious son Chris • (Jason Hopley), who is trying to deal with the breakup of his parents' marriage. 'Add to this a sensitive Jewish boyfriend, played by Saul Rubinek, a small-town school board and a group of mean -mouthed high school thugs and you get the picture — total confusion! Hatred in our society is a serious subject and not one that can be dealt with in an hour-long dramatic production, or what passes for one. "Oakmount High" was mediocre at best — maudlin at worst. Writers Peter Jobin and Timothy Bond were capitalizing on the Alberta story that hit the front pages last year and is still in limbo. Keegstra was found guilty during a sensational trial and is presently appealing that decision. His lawyers successfully stopped the showing of "Oakmount High" in Alberta, arguing that it would jeopardize his appeal case. A great deal of experience was represented in the lead roles in this drama. Susan Hogan has performed in many television, stage and film roles in Canada. Peacocke is a Genie Award winner for his role in "The Hounds of Notre Dame" and is professor off drama at the University of Alberta. And, Rubinek is a television and film actor who has just completed a role in the film, "Sweet Liberty", written, directed and co-starring Alan Alda of MASH fame. For Jason Hopley, though, who played the son, this was his first major television role. • Movies on CFPL London FRIDAY, 1:00 A.M.—"CHRISTMAS LILLIES OF THE FIELD".
