I want a luxurious look in my bedroom — a private retreat for myself where I can have my clothes stored conveniently and my com- puter for working on ac- counts. I have to buy new fur- niture, floor covering and 'draperies. Where should 1 start? —T.P. A. You can avoid costly mistakes by enlisting the aid of an interior designer early in your redecorating plan. Find one you can work with and whose work you like. For referrals, check with your friends and at shops where you think you might like to buy your furniture. To eliminate the need for bulky dressers and chests, consider building in your clothes storage and facilities to house your computer and provide adjacent work space. You could create a very important bed with hanging draperies in lovely fabrics. Now you simply need to give careful attention to access- orizing, adding little accents here and there — and perhaps 'a few big ones, too. Don't go out and buy a painting in blue and gray so it "matches". Choose some paintings, prints and art- work that represent you and that you really like. Add interesting materials — like a piece of metal sculpture on a marble block pedestal or a shiny silver chandelier with crystal light bulbs. Combine different materials and textures — mat and shiny, rough and smooth — for best effect. Add pleasing ordinary things from your life — books, pillows, small lamps. And plants always add a wonderful lift to a room, pro- viding you have enough natpral light to keep them healthy. Q. I'm upholstering a wall in my child's room. What do youdo to cover up the staples and tiny nails along the edge? — T.C. A. You can glue a gimp or braid to the edge if you can find something that blends with the fabric.
