s the Jokers
By Lee Cowley
The much -improved
Wingham Junior C Jokers
played host to the powerful
Barons from Hanover
Sunday afternoon at the
Lockridge arena in
Wingham, going down to
defeat by a score of 9-4.
The first -place Barons are
continuing where they left
off last season; when they
were 28-0-2 in league play.
They remain undefeated this
season and handled
Wingham easily in previous
meetings.
Hanover struck early in
the game when Rob Beitz
parked a rebound behind
Joker goalie Greg McClem-
ent on a power play at 0:59.
Two late goals within 53
seconds staked the Barons to
a 3-0 lead at the buzzer, Rob
Wallace scored from a seem-
ingly impossible angle at
15:51 and Beitz followed at
16:44 when he was permitted
several swipes at a rebound
in front of the Wingham net.
Both teams ran into
penalty trouble in the second
period.. However it was
Hanover which was able to
capitalize on the advantages,
striking for three goals on
five power plays while the
Jokers managed only one
goal on eight manpower
advantages.
The Jokers scored at 0:51,
when Dave Montgomery's
shot from the point hit the
crossbar and dropped
directly onto the stick of
teammate Brett Martin in
front of the Hanover net. He
beat goalie Jamie Zettler
easily for Wingham's first
goal.
From that point on it was
all Hanover, as the Barons
exploded for five unan-
swered goals to take a
commanding 8-1 lead into the
dressing room.
Beitz completed his hat
trick at 6:08 when he
executed a perfect three-way
passing play with Terry
Whiteside and Chris Ahrens.
Whiteside then scored two
consecutive goals at 7:46 and
9:26, both on the power play.
Beitz did all the work on
Whiteside's first goal,
lugging the puck from his
own blueline and beating
several defenders before
laying a perfect pass at
Whiteside's feet.
Steve Shenk made it 7-1 at
17:30 with a hard shot from
the point. At 18:38 Whiteside
completed his hat trick, the
result of some good fore -
checking in the Wingham
zone.
The Jokers played a solid
final frame, outscoring the
visitors 3-1 to make the final
score 9-4. Dave Montgomery
got the second Wingham
goal, deflecting a shot from
the point. Whiteside replied
for the Barons at 9:46 on an
excellent give -and -go play
with linemate Dave Hopkins.
Two late goals by the
Jokers made it respectable.
First Paul Edwards tallied
at 18:11 when he moved in
from his point position for a
shot which caromed in off
Zettler's pads. Montgomery
completed the scoring 44
seconds later on a play that
started when Rob Willis fed a
perfect pass to Brett Martin
at centre ice.. Martin did
some excellent work,
fighting his way deep into the
Baron zone before unloading
a perfect relay to Mont-
gomery.
Despite the final outcome,
the Jokers played well. The
fact is the Barons are too big
and too Buick for the Jokers
to handle for a full 60
. minutes. When the Wingham
club stuck to solid positional
play, as it did in the third
period, it fared better.
Whiteside and Beitz,
playing on the same line for
the Barons, racked up some
very impressive offensive
statistics. Whiteside had
eight points on four goals and
four assists and Beitz
chipped in six points on three
goals and three assists.
Montgomery led Wingham
with four points on two goals
and two assists.

Sailors top Jokers
in Friday -night game
The Wingham Jokers had
a rare Friday night home
game last week. Their op-
ponents were the Goderich
Sailors, whom the Jokers
had defeated 9-7 in a
previous home game this
season,
The Jokers were bolstered
by two new faces, Doug
Stephenson .. and Doug
McFarlan, but missed their
top scorer, Jamie Robinson,
who had the night off.
The teams fought a see-
saw battle in the first period,
with first one team taking
the lead then the other.
Kevin Lee opened the
scoring for the Sailors at the
20 -second mark. Brett
Cameron got that back for
the Jokers at 2:24.
Rick Shakes again gave
Goderich the lead with a goal
at 4:35 before Steve
Nicholson tied the count at.
two with a shorthanded

marker at 6:46. Dave Mont-
gomery gave Wingham the
lead for the first time when
he tallied at 11:44, with help
from newcomer McFarlan.
Two consecutive goals
from the stick of Daryl
Madge staked the Sailors to
a hard-fought 4-3 lead at the
first -period buzzer.
The Jokers came out flying
in the second period with
three unanswered goals to
take a 6-4 lead. First Paul
Edwards struck at 5:44 on
the power play. This was
followed by Blake Flett's
goal at 10:14 and Mont-
gomery's second goal at
11:24. The Sailors came back
with a late goal by Pete
Willems at 18:01.
Stephenson increased the
home team's lead to 7-5 with
his power play goal at 2:47 of
the third period. Dave
Gallow responded with a
power play marker of his
own at 6:40 to put the Sailors
back into contention.
Stephenson scored again at
8:05 to once again give his
club a two -goal bulge.
Unfortunately for - the
Jokers, their elation was to
be short-lived. A defensive
collapse halfway through the
period allowed the Sailors to
score three unanswered
goals in less than a minute
and a half to take a 9-8 lead.
John Graham started the
onslaught at 10:30 and
followed with another
marker, seven seconds later.
Brad Armstrong potted the
winner at 11:54. Graham
completed his hat trick and
the evening's scoring with an
insurance marker at 18:03.

orth
strong effort
f1 9
A pair of shorthanded
goals midway through the
second period broke open a 3-
2 hockey game and set the
Wingham Royals on the road
to an 8-3 defeat at the hands
of the Durham Inter-
mediates on Sunday:
The goals; coming just- a
minute and a half apart
during the same penalty,
scuttled what had until then
been a strong effort by the
visiting Royals, who had out-
played their opponents in the
opening period ana played
them on even terms through
half of the second frame.
Despite playing a strong
first period, the Royals —
who again had to juggle lines
because of missing players
— had trouble scoring and
emerged trailing 2-1.
Randy Reay gave Durham
a 1-O lead at 7:51 of the period
Optimist Atoms
win first game
The Wingham Optimist
Atoms got their first league
victory of the season when
they defeated the Atoms
from Mount Forest by a 5-4
score last Saturday.
Jonathan Lane led the
Wingham attack with two
goals and one assist. Bart
Cameron and Ryan Deyell
each added two assists. The
other goal -scorers for
Wingham were Jonathan
Balzer, Shane Pegg and
Matthew Hunter. Ken Hogg
and Mike MacKay each had
one assist in the game.
The Atoms' next game is
Saturday against Owen
Sound.
Rockers hand losses
to Hanover, Zurich
Last Saturday night
Hanover ventured to
Wingham for a game with
the Wingham Rockers
oldtimers' team. Hanover
probably wishes the game
had been canceled.
The first period saw
Wingham go up 2-0 on goals
by John 'Cullen` from Tim
Tolton and Jim English and
Gary Lisle from Rob Laurie.
Second period action
resulted in five goals for
Wingham. Lisle got' his
second marker, assisted by
Ray , Walker and Cullen.
Then Bill Tolton scored on a
pass from George Skinn and
English.
Bill Robinson fired' one
home, assisted by Lisle and
Laurie and Bill Tolton
notched his second of the
frame, assisted by Skinn and
Robert Armstrong. The final
goal of the period came off
the stick of Armstrong.
The only scaring in the
third was a Wingham goal by
Armstrong to end the match.
Wayne Drury came up
with some superb saves to
preserve his shutout and
excellent clearing and
break-outs contributed to
this exciting win for
Wingham.
tast-6Tuesday Wingham,
traveled to Zurich for a
game against the Has-
Beans. The local fellows
came home with a hard-
fought 3-2 victory.
Spitfires maintain
standing atop WIHL
The Newsboys squared off
against Crawford Dodgers in
Monday night action. The
last time these two teams
played the Newsboys handed.
the Dodgers their first defeat
of the season. However this
time the Dodgers prevailed
by a score of 6-4.
The Newsboys managed to
keep the score close for the
first period and a half, but
then took two really costly
penalties which allowed the
Dodgers to build a three -goal
lead.
The Newsboys staged a
brief rally in the third to get
within one -goal, butcould not
manage to.tie it up. -
The line of Todd Stainton
and the two Tervit brothers
had another big night,
scoring four of the six
Dodger goals. Gord Hill had
a single. Scoring for the
Advance -Times were` Bill
Brophy, Rick Scrimgeour
and Barry O'Krafka.
On Tuesday night the
league -leading Stainton
Spitfires played the last -
place Mustangs. The Spit-
fires again showed why they
are in first ' place, scoring
eight goals and allowingonly
three to maintain their
league lead.
Bridge had plenty of
scoring chances, but was
thwarted time and time
again by the outstanding
play of goaltender John
Tweddle.
At the other end of the ice
Pete George had a rough
night in the Mustang net as
the Spitfires made the most
of their scoring op-
portunities.
Kevin Coultes again led
the Spitfire. scoring with two
goals, while Askes, Thomp-
son, Stapleton, Shaw and
Dave Hills also scored.
Mustang goals were
scored by Larry Howatt, Bill
LeVan and Phil Beard.
League, standings after
eight weeks of play are as
follows:
Stainton Spitfires — 12
points
Crawford Dodgers — 11
points
Advance -Times — 5 points
Bride Motors — 4 points.
Zurich went ahead 1-0
before Armstrong scored for
Wingham, unassisted.
It was 2-1 for Zurich when
Cullen scored from Robinson
to knot the score again. The
third period saw Bill Tolton
score from Ken Balzer and
Armstrong to record the
victory.
Tom Creeden played a
strong game in net to record
the win.
and Brian Sweeney
to 2-0 on a two -pian ad-
vantage at 10:20.
Wingham finally got on the
scoreboard with just one
second left on the clock as
Dave Golley, back in the
lineup following a knee in-
jury, took advantage of a
nice pass -out from Doug
McFarlan to beat Jeff Schutz
in the Durham net.
Jeff Love's goal four
minutes into the second
period gave Durham a 3-1
lead, but Randy Clarke cut
the margin to 3-2 at the
midway point of the period.
McFarlan also 'drew an
assist on the Clarke goal.'
However disaster overtook
the Royals a few minutes
later when a power play
turned sour. With Reay in
the penalty box for hooking,
Todd Stoddart scored right
off the faceoff to give his
team a two -goal cushion and
before the penalty had ex-
pired Bob Sullivan made it 5-
2 with another shorthanded
marker.
The Royals never really
recovered from that and
Stoddart scored again before
the end of the period to make
it 6-2.

point by Kevin Hastie, after
Bill LeVan had hooked the
puck back to him, made it 6-3
on a Royal power play, in the
third period, before two
More Durham goals closed
the scoring. Reay scored his
second goal of the game
right off another faceoff with
5:25 left to play and Sweeney
got his second goal on a
breakaway with just over a
minute remaining.
The Royals' problem in
this game was the same as in
many recent matches: while
part of the team was visiting
\, Durham, the rest was
visiting elsewhere. Leading
scorer Ken Cousins was
away at a family Christmas
dinner while regular
defencemen Ken Higgins
and Bernie Haines were off
skiing in Colorado. •
Retired Royal Dennis
Knox suited up to play on the
blueline beside Tom Irwin,
while Bill LeVan took
Cousins' spot at centre on the
first line.
Unlike last season when
the Royals breezed through
the first half'of the schedule
and then started to sputter in
the second half, the opening
portion of this season has
been anything but easy. A
Novice Bs split
two league games
Last Tuesday the
Wingham Novice Bs
traveled to Milverton where
they upended the opposition
4-0, with goalie Chad Davis
picking up his first shutout of
the season. The boys played
excellent two-way hockey
and were full value for the
win.
Josh Johnston was
rewarded for his continuous
hustle and good positional
hockey by a natural ,hat
trick, as he scored one goal
in each of the three periods.
Peter Gusso closed out the
scoring for Wingham, net-
ting one with four minutes
left in the game.
Gusso also picked up an
assist and Chad Creeden set
up one of Johnston's goals.
On Saturday the boys
journeyed to Listowel and
played good, solid hockey
against the Whites for two
periods. After two periods
Wingham led 3-2. Gusso
popped in two goals, with
Bryan Debruyn picking up
assists on both, and Jason
Kleist scored an unassisted
goal.
Then in the third period
Listowel went to work and
scored three unanswered
goals as Wingham seemed to
abandon its defensive game.
The Listowel boys had
several two -on -none and two --
on -one breakaways as the
usually reliable. Wingham
defence continually got
caught up ice and the for-
wards did not backcheck.
• Jeff Droog led the Listowel
attack with, a..pa ir of goals. -
The final score was 5-3.

Kin Bantams
drop Listowel
The Wingham Kinsmen
Bantams hosted Listowel at
the local arena Dec. 10.
When the last buzzer went,
Wingham was on the topside
of a 12-3 score. .
The first period was all
Wingham's as Bill Kinahan
opened the night with his
unassisted goal. Corey
McKee scored on a pass
from Kinahan, then
defenceman Dave Hein -
miller shot the puck to
Kinahan, who bounced it to
McKee to dump behind the
Listowel goalie. -
Despite Listowel's three
goals in the second frame,
Wingham kept the game well
out of reach as Kinahan kept
busy in front of the Listowel
net, scoring five times.
Jason Coultes . scored
Wingham's ninth goal of the
evening. Assists for the
period went to McKee, Chris
Michie and Joe Walker.
In the third period
Wingham again ran the show
as Brophy, Daer, McKee and
Jason Moore all scored
singles.
This Thursday -the team
travels to Listowel for a
regular season game.
Sunday they meet Hanover
at their arena.
