A'C.GORDON The business . tycoon, Henry Harris, meets you in the study in his suburban home. "I'm greatly dis- turbed about this," he tells you, "not so much because of the missing money but because of the confidence I've always had in the three logical suspects. When I arrived in my office in,town this morning,- I discovered I had left some important papers 'in my wall safe here at home. I' immediately dis- patched my secretary, Miss Alice Geiger, to my home for the papers, and then about a half hour later she phoned to tell me she had found the door of the safe open and papers scattered all over the place. I hurried home and found that all the cash in the safe was missing — more than $3,000. Besides Mises Geiger, the only. other two persons who know./the com- bination of t e`safe are Tucker, my bu ir, and Mrs. Kerns, my housekeeper." After carefully examining the safe's door, the study door, the desk, and the tele- phone for fingerprints, and finding none at all, you call the three suspects into the room and ask Alice Geiger for her story. "I was really startled when I carne into the study here, saw all those papers scattered over the floor, and the door of the safe open," --she-ex-c-la runs "I-immediate- ly `4--i r:edi.ately grabbed the phone and called Mr. Harris. Then I called out for the butler and housekeeper. They were as surprized as I when they ran inand found all. this mess_'' The buxom housekeeper, Mrs. Kerns, who has been standing in one corner of the study wiping her hands nervously on her apron, now chimes in: "I was busy this morning — cleaning in the bedroorns -- it wasn't until I heard her voice that I knew Miss Geiger was even in the house. And certainly -I didn't know that anyone else had come into the study after Mr. Harris left for his office this morning." "I admitted Miss Geiger into the house at the front door," volunteers Tucker, the butler. "And then I was in the kitchen about ten minutes later when I heard her cry out. Certainly I had not gone into the study at any time this morning. And moreover, I would never even dream of robbing Mr. Harris. He's always been the most generous and consid- erate of employers." "Has any one of you touched or moved anything at all in this room since dis- covering this theft?" you ask. After, a negative reply from the three employees and also their employer, you .pause for a moment, and then you slowly raise' a finger and point it at the per- son you suspect of the theft.
