By Vonnie Lee I remenhber one 'summer of a few years ago, stranding on the northwest shore of Prince Edward Island and being so overcome with emotion that I could not • speak. The words would not pass the lump in my throat, In the quietness of that moment and that world, I was watching a sunset. And •I remember thinking that Canadians travel around the world but they have not really lived, •nor have they seen great beauty, if they have not seen a Prince Edward Island sunset. Some scenes from last week's movie, "Anne of Green Gables", brought that emotion and those memories back to mind. Truly, Anne Shirley is Canada's own heroine From -th-e time sure_ first came to life in the pages of the book written. by Lucy Maud' " Montgomery, Anne" has charmed generations of Canadians and influenced young women who, like Anne, are ambitious, and energetic and want to make something of their lives. Montgomery is still Canada's best-selling woman writer, 43 years after her death in 1942. This new movie on Anne's life, a co -production of the CBC, PBS, CITY -TV, the German national network and Sullivan Films Inc., with the Ti-a7rti-cipation of Teleftll' Canada, is a delightful and beautifully filmed four-hour drama which was premiered in two parts on the CBC. Filmed on location in Prince Edward Island and Southern Ontario, the classic story stars Canadian actress Megan Follows, daughter of Ted Follows and Dawn Greenhalgh, both prominent actors in this country. As the spontaneous and' irrepressible orphan who is adopted and brought to • • • • • • • • • • • • Green Gables by mistake, Follows performs flawlessly, as though the pages of the book have literally come to life in . our livingrooms. Follows has performed many top roles on Canadian television and has recently guest -starred in some American television shows and starred in a movie, "The Silver Bullet". • The hard-working owners of Green Gables who first want to send Anne back, then grow -to love her, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, are played magnificently by Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth. Dewhurst has starred in many movies and won a Tony Award for her role gr "A Moon for The Misbegotten`, on the Broadway stage. What .a wonderful moment when she finally allows her emotions to surface after her brother dies and she hears Anne crying in her room! Farnsworth began his career as a Hollywood stuntman, doubling for actors in many westerns. When he began acting, it was with such polish that he earned an Oscar nomination. He has also been seen in several' American movies and the top Canadian filth, "The Grey Fox". His warm- th and sincerity as he defends Anne at every turn make him an audience favorite and when he dies in her arms, it is a loss that every viewer shares. The story of "Anne of Green Gables" has been translated into more than 30 languages with over eight million copies in print. The movie of this favorite Canadian is bound to be successful, too, a truly Canadian work of art about a delightful girl we .have all adopted and made our own. He's devastated to find that Fort Hamilton is not "just north" of Vancouver (it's near the Yukon border) and that "life- style Canada" is not all that the immigration brochures would have him believe. As if this isn't enough, Bob is assigned to teach the formidable class 9B — a kind of holding tank for the un- teachables, dissenters and rabblerousers. He now must • develop a relationship with these students and find a way to make them, and the system, believe they are in- deed worthwhile human beings. "9B" stars Robert Wisden as Bob Dawson and the cast will include Sheila Mc- Carthy, Joann McIntyre, Ron White, John Bayliss, Chris Owens, Rachel Craw- ford and Trevor Smith. The screenplay for "9B" was written by Grahame Woods and is based on a true story by Don Hunter, a Van- couver , journalist. "9B" is 'produced and directed by James Swan. , Executive producer is Sam Levene.
