With nearly half their players unavailable due to other commitments, the Royals played the game with only three defencemen while last-minute recruit Bob Johnston enabled the coaches to piece together two forward lines. However once again the team responded to adversity with a strong effort, getting goals from five different players to earn the single point. Teeswater Captain Kent Cerson scored the only goal of the opening period, from Robert MacDonald and Dan Davidson, to give the Falcons a 1-O lead, They stretched it to 3-0 in the second period on MacDonald's power play marker at 8:20 and Steve Zettler's goal two minutes later, before the Royals got on the board with Captain Dave Stephenson scoring from Len Stamper and Ken Cousins in the final minute. Doug.McFarlan's unassist- ed power play goal closed the gap to 3-2 nearing the midway mark of the third period before a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart shot Teeswater into 'a' command- ing 5-2 lead with just over seven minutes left to play. Dean Netzke scored the first goal, Larry Meyer potting the second'. Down but not out, the Royals fought back with three straight goals, the final one 'coming with 1:30 left to play, to gain a 5-5 tie. Bill Brophy, playing left wing on a. line with Cousins and Stephenson, started the comeback at 13:08, beating Dave MacLean in the Falcon net. Two and a half minutes later Sandy Fitzgerald, in his first game back following an absence of several weeks with a broken jaw, made it a one -goal game. The tying marker eame off the stick of Cousins, assisted by Stephenson and Brophy, rounding out the scoring by giving each forward except Johnston a goal. Stephenson, Cousins and Brophy each had three points in the match, with Stamper and Tom Irwin also picking up scoring points on single assists. This was a good, clean game, with few penalties assessed. With the exception of a short stretch in the second period during which Teeswater scored two goals, and another weak moment in the third that resulted in two more, the Royals played a strong game positionally. The three defencemen, Stamper, Irwin and Paul Montgomery, played it smart and moved the puck out of trouble quickly, saving their energy to complete the game. While the tie does not avenge two earlier losses to the Falcons this season, considering that the Royals .played the game with only seven of their regular skaters it is a tribute to their skill and determination.. Once the Christmas holidays are over and the team gets back some of its injured players, it should be in good shape for the second half off the season. The next scheduled match is thisSunday at Durham, with game time at 1:30 p.m. and the bus leaving the Wingham arena at 11:30. The next home game will be against Lion's Head Dec. 20, starting at 8:30 p.m. Duplicate bride The Wingham Duplicate Bridge Club met last Thurs- day evening at the fire hall. Winners were first, Mary Lloyd and Harley Crawford; second, Margaret Cruick- shank and Mary Caslick; third, 'Kaye Forgie and Omar Haselgrove and fourth, Jessie Chester and Jean Whitby. Lacklustre Royals lose to Ripley 9-5 A lacklustre game by the Wingham Royals gave the Ripley Roosters something to crow about as they skated to a 9-5 victory at the Wingham arena Friday night. Four power play goals by Ripley helped to sink the Royals, who also suffered from the loss of Captain Dave Stephenson midway through the opening period. The speedy winger, who has been the Royals' sparkplug this season, got thrown. out following a fight with Paul Wilken. Ripley also lost Brian Masschelein for the game when he stayed to watch the battle instead of skating away as the rules require. The Royals had a full bench for this match, but it didn't help as the team suffered from a lack of concentration and intensity. Ken Cousins had a good game, scoring three of the Wingham goals, while Doug McFarlan, in his first game of the season, and Dave Wheeler, called up from the Juvenile team, also played well. McFarlan, who just returned from an extended holiday, will be a big help to the team once he gets in shape, while Wheeler skated miles and worked hard all game. Ripley jumped into an early lead on Dave Gamble's goal in the opening minute of the game. Kevin Hastie's power. play goal evened the score temporarily, but three more Ripley markers, the Blues tie Tiverton in hard-fought contest Wingham's Intermediate ladies' team, the Blues, are off to a good start this season, even though there only are three teams in the WOAA league. The team has lost a . few veterans from last year for reasons unknown, but everyone has got back on her feet, or skates, as the case may be. This year's roster includes a bit of old and new. The ladies .traveled to Tiverton on Dec. 1 — the day before the blizzard. As ex- pected, it was a hard-fought game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. Tharon Riley picked up four points in the game and she just seemed to be everywhere. Riley's first goal came three minutes into the first period, but home - team Tiverton got that one back. Eileen O'Donoghue put Wingham ahead again in the second period, assisted by Riley. However Tivertonscored twice before the end of the period to take a 3-2 lead into the final frame. Five minutes into the third period, Carol VanderWoude scored on a hard slapshot from the point, assisted by Riley, to tie the match once ,more. But the Reds scored at the 10 -minute mark to jump out in the lead once again. With 12 seconds remaining in the third, Riley. scored her second goal of evening, unassisted. The Jokers played well and had their Hawks. Last-minute goal gives Hawks a 6-5 victory over the Jokers By Lee Cowley The third-place Walkerton Black Hawks visited Wingham Sunday afternoon for a game against the hometown Jokers, formerly the Wingham Ironmen, of the OHA Junior C group. Despite playing what many observers thought was exchanged goals in the third, their finest game of the with Cousins scoring both season to date, the Jokers Wingham•markers. ended up on the short end of Their penalty killing, a 6-5 score. The Wingham crew was bolstered for this .game by the addition of two players from last year's squad, Brett Cameron and Steve Nicholson. The two, who had been members of the last Wingham team to win the Junior C group champion- ship, the 1983-84 • Ironmen, contributed both 'on the ice and in the dressing room with their winning attitude and enthusiasm. The Jokers opened the scoring at 8:05 of the first period, with Blake Flett connecting on a pass from' Jamie Robinson on the power play. However two late goals. by the Hawks staked them to a 2-1 lead at the end of the period. Joe Zettler scored. at 17:14 on a fine play when he Ripley scored four times in eight chances on the power play, while Wingham was two -for -five. Each team also had one shorthanded goal. Ripley moved the puck well and always seemed to find an open man in good scoring position. Captain Brent Armstrong, a former Junior A. hockey player, scored four nice goals. He, together with Carl and Mark Stanley formed a pretty classy line, picking up a total of 11 points on the night. The Royals started the game with big Bernie Haines playing left wing on a line with Cousins and Stephen- son, However after the loss of Stephenson, Haines dropped back to play in his regular defensive spot. came from behind the net and deked goalie Greg McClement. The second goal was scored by Jamie Brad- stock at 19:07 when he played a two -on -one per- fectly, using his winger as a decoy and drilling a hard shat past McClement. In the second period the Jokers .. were unable to capitalize on five power plays, one for four minutes when Hawk Captain John Knox swung his stick at the Wingham bench. A com- bination of a lack of finesse around the net, bad luck and good goaltending by Hawk goalie Paul Stevers kept the Jokers from tying the score in the early going. Scott Girdler tipped in a pass from Wade Girdler at 5:57 to make the score 3-1. before Bradstock potted his second goal on a three -on - one to put the Hawks in the driver's seat by a 4-1 margin. It is to the Jokers' credit that they did not fall apart at the seams. Despite out- playing and outhustling the Hawks, they just could not find the handle around the net. They finally solved goalie Stevers to score two quick goals within 11 seconds near the end of the period toget right back into the game. The first was scored at 19:14 by Flett, his second -of the game. The second came on an excellent, hard shot just under the crossbar by Jamie Spitfires hold lead in WIHL standing The Stainton Spitfires continued their winning ways with a 9-4 victory over the Advance -Times News- boys Monday night. The Newsboys were shorthanded again, with only six skaters. Despite the shortage the Newsboys played a fantastic game to .keep the score close for almost two periods, trailing 3-1. The Spitfires took control in the last half of the game, outscoring Advance 6-3 the rest of the way. Coultes and Stapleton led the scoring for the Spitfires, while Doug Maclntyre had two goals for the Newsboys. In Tuesday night action, Crawford Dodgers continued. their domination over Bridge Mustangs with a 6-4 win. The Mustangs again built up a lead, only to see the Dodgers come back with three goals in the third period. The line of Todd Stainton and the Tervit brothersdid most of the damage, all three managing to get onto the score sheet. Scoring for Bridge were Gord Marr, Doug Doig, Warren Moore and Larry Howatt. Harry Wilson played a solid game in the nets for Crawford to preserve the win. The league standings after seven games have Stainton leading_with 10oints• followed by Crawford with nine; the Advance -Times with five and Bridge with four. Robinson. Tim Brown knotted the score at four with his power play marker at 11:03 of the third period. He deflected a shot from Paul Robinson at the point. Wade Girdles got that back at 15:30 to once again give the Hawks the lead. However the Jokers tied the score at five when Jamie Robinson completed a splendid in- dividual effort by beating the Hawk goalie at 17:00. This set the stage for Zettler's game -winning goal at 19:49 from a scramble in front of the Wingham net: The final'score at the buzzer was Black Hawks 6, Jokers 5. Despite the tough loss, there were a lot of en- couraging signs in this game. Every player, from the goalie on out, hustled. The addition of Cameron and Nicholson is a big plus to the club and Jamie Robinson continues to be a scoring threat every time he touches the puckin the offensive zone.
