Howick's first game was against a strong Elora team. Howick scored early in the first frame as Steve Gibson took a pass from Jason Douglas to beat the Elora goalie. Donald Livermore gave Howick a 2-0 lead after the first period on an unassisted goal as he rushed from end to end. Howick led 3-0 after two periods as Jirret Henhoeffer scored on a neat passing play from Donald Livermore and Gibson. Elora scored two quick goals with under five minutes remaining in the game, which led to an ex- citing finish. Jayson Potts finally relieved the pressure by scoring an empty -net goal with seven seconds remaining to give Howick a 4-2 victory. The second game last Saturday was as exciting as the first. Howick played Wheatley, the team which just had defeated Waterloo. Wheatley scored after only 13 seconds of play and this lead held up for one period. John Greig tied the game for Howick at 1-1 halfway through the second period. Gibson assisted on the marker. Andrew Weber scored a lucky goal from behind the net to give Howick a 2-1 lead before the second frame ended. This goal seemed to give the Howick boys a lift. Early in the final period Gibson scored on a powerplay as he tipped in a shot from the point by Greig. Donald Livermore also assisted on the play. Wheatley narrowed the count with only one minute and six seconds remaining in the game. Wheatley pulled its goalie, but was unable to get the equalizer. Peter Stewart and Mark Fraser played excellent games in the Howick net. The early eight o'clock start on Sunday morning proved quite refreshing for the Howick team as the lads dominated play over the Waterloo squad and emerged easy 10-0 winners. Gibson led the Howick attack with five goals. Henhoeffer and Greig scored two goals each with Donald Livermore scoring a single marker. Philip and Donald Livermore had four and three assists respectively. Two assists went to Potts and Douglas and single assists went to Steve MacGregor and Jason Jacobson. The win sent Howick into 'the championship game and Fraser recorded the shutout for Howick. • • King City advanced to the finals with a 6-5 overtime victory over Alliston. King City featured a high -scoring player. by the name of Don O'Neill, who had scored 23 goals in the previous four games. Howick was geared up for Novice B squad bows to Belgrave The Belgrave squad came to Wingham last Tuesday, determined to change things following an earlier 7-2 loss to the Wingham Novice Bs. The Wingham Tads played good positional hockey for the first period of this exhibition game, scoring the only goal of the period as , Jason Crawford set up Jason Kleist for what turned out to be the only Wingham goal. Belgrave scored twice in each of the second and third ;.periods and mated to a 4-1 win.' Mark rOlsonscored twice while Brent Robinson and Doug Wilson picked up singles. On Saturday Wingham hosted Milverton in league play and came up with a 9-3 win. Wingham scored twice in the first period with goals by Josh Johnston and Peter Gusso. Danny McPherson and Gusso assisted on_ Johnston's goal, while Bryan DeBruyn and Joel Pegg set up Gusso's goal. Chad Kipfer replied for Milverton. The second period belonged to Wingham as the boys outscored Milverton 5- 1. Johnston and Gusso each picked up his second goal while Todd Edgar, Shawn Walker and DeBruyn tallied once_ -each. Kleist, Mc- Pherson, Johnston, Gusso and Edgar assisted on the goals. DeBruyn and Edgar scored their second goals in the third. Pegg and Gusso, assisted on DeBruyn's goal while McPherson set up Edgar. Kipfer also scored his second goal of the game for Milverton to complete the scoring. The defensive trio of Chris Alexander, Chad Creeden and Pegg did a goqd job of moving the puck out of their own end, as well as providing good protection for goalie Chad Davis, who also played. a solid game. Wingham travels to Milverton and Listowel next week for league games. at the Wingham Public School Editors: Andrea Grant Peter Poulin Hi, this is Stevie reporting for Grade 6 at the Wingham Public School. Just 'recently our class had a citrus campaign and it had ex- cellent results. The first Friday of each month is a special day in our class. Our last special day was called "Teddy Bear Day" and the next one, last Friday, was "Sex -Change Day". The girls • dressed up as boys and the boys dressed upas girls. The last month or so we have been spending time on a social studies project. The students picked out three different Mexican Indian tribes, the Mayans, the Aztecs._.9c _the_ Toltec then they wrote reports or essays about their tribe. Well, that wraps up my report for this week. "Have a nice day." . -- Steve Silcock All the children in Mrs. Robertson's Kindergarten class are counting the days until Christmas. They have been doing many Christmas activities, such as writing to Santa with the help of reading buddies and they also have been decorating the Christmas tree. The afternoon Kin- dergarten class is looking forward to performing at the Christmas assembly on Thursday. —Marcy McKee Mrs, Szarek's classhas been making Christrnas decorations and everybody has been bringing in tree ornaments for their class tree. For this favorite holiday, the class might make a 'Christmas Pop-up Book. This year Mrs, Szarek's class` will be singing in the assembly. Snowball already has received a gift. She has a brand new cage_Merry Merry Christmas, Snowball! —Sean Whiteley This week the Grade 5s have been very busy working on Christmas cards for Mom, Dad. Grandpa, Grandma or just about anyone. They also are having a review test. The last two units of their books dealt mostly with adjectives such as: grand, fort, triste. Like 1 said, "Talk about busy'". Let's hope they all have good memories. --Kirsten Keil the challenge. The only goal of the first period was scored by Douglas, assisted by Philip Livermore to end the first frame at 1-0 for Howick. Gibson scored four con- secutive goals in the next two periods to give Howick a 5-0 L lead midway through the third period. Henhoeffer and Potts each had two assists on the goals, while Jason Douglas collected a single assist. O'Neill was not to be denied as he scored his 24th and 25th goals before the end of the contest. However in the end Howick held on to win the championship by a 5- 2 score. Stewart played an ex- cellent game in net. eg ion PeeWees win Last weekend the Wingham Legion PeeWees participated in a tournament in Fergus, returning home with a one win, one loss and a draw. The PeeWees lost their first game of the tournament 3-2 to a strong Alliston squad, which made it to the championship round in their division. This was a very close, tight -checking game with the Legion team having several excellent scoring opportunities, but unable to capitalize on thesechances. Both Wingham goals were scored by Jeff McKee, who had a strong game. Tim Currie assisted on each marker. Andrew Mann had a good game for Wingham in net. Wingham's second game turned into a one-sided affair with the local boys dominating the match with Lambeth throughout. The Legion squad opened the scoring with 'less than two minutes gone in the first frame on a fine solo effort by Currie. From this point on, the ' game belonged to Wingham. Jeff McKee led the Wingham attackers with three goals. Rob MacKay had a goal and two assists, while other Wingham goal scorers were Mike Elmslie and Dave McKee. Assists went to Jason Bloemberg with three and Don Hein - miller with one. Bill McGrath delivered a strong performance in the Wingham net. The Legion team emerged with the 7-1 victory. In Wingham's final game of the tournament, the boys met . a determined Forest club that had not won a game. The boys from Forest outplayed the Wingham team throughout. The local lads certainly are a much better team than they showed in this game and were fortunate to gain a tie with the goalie pulled and 50 seconds remaining in the game. Forest went ahead 2-1 in the first frame with no further scoring until Wingham's tying goal in the third for the 2-2 final. Wingham goals were scored by the McKee brothers, Jeff and David. Elmslie had two assists and single assists went to Rob Harrison and Steve Michie. SENIOR LADIES High doubles this week were rolled by Edythe Coultes 376; Jean Robertson 352; Catherine Campbell 330; Isabel Arbuckle:309 and Mae Louttit 309. SENIOR MEN Those bowling high games last week were Gord Francis 151, 208; Hugh Mundell 177; Bill Lediet 177 and Ken Saxton Sr. 207. BELGRAVE LADIES High games last week were rolled by Lorraine Cook 207, 153; Jean •Nethery 173; Laura Johnston 173 and Hilda Vincent 174. MON. NIGHT MEN'S The Gophers lead the league with , 13 ..poi ts, followed by the Black Machine with 12, the Boat People with 10, the Matadors with 3 and the Volts and Diggers with 2. Wayne Elston had the high single of 266 and Bruce Skinn rolled the high triple of 713. Other high games were rolled by Rob McKenzie 261; Jim Steffler 255; Bruce Skinn 253; Reg O'Hagan 252 and Ric Rathburn 251. Thanks to spares Rod Hickey, Wayne Elston and Brian Steffler. THURS. MIXED Ed's Easter Lilies have taken the lead with 21 points, followed by Gary's Glads with 17, Ivy's Irises with 16, Peg's Peonies with 14, Marty's Marigolds with 10 and Barb's Begonias with 6. Fran Golley had the high single of 242 for the ladies •and the high triple of 611. Rick Hill had the men's high single of 261 and Norm Bolt had the high triple of 646. ' Other high games were rolled by Russell Springer 255; Kaye McCormick 232; Norm Bolt 243, 228 and Verna Haugh 24. WED. NIGHTLADIES Michele's Monks are in first place with 17 points, followed by Nancy's Nuns with 11, Lila's Laymen with 10, Faye's Friars and Juanita's Rabbis with 9 each and Jean's Deacons with 7. Jean King had the high single of 259 and the high _triple of 698. • Other high games were rolled by Louise Welwood 247; Shelley Ste. Marie 246; Michele Foxton 232; Shirley Storey 233 and Catherine Campbell 230. The winners in the turkey roll were: high single, Evelyn Stephens 258; high triple, Jean King 698; hidden scores, Michele Foxton, Edna Mae Armstrong, Betty Darling. Florence Thom- pson, Arlene Willis and Sharon Skinn. Dianne Thynne won the ticket draw for a turkey. COFFEE KLATCH High games this week were rolled by Shirley Storey 272, 202; Jean King 256, 241 and Muriel Irvine 262. The .Christmas party will be held Monday at 1 p.m. BLUEVALE MIXED Jim Thompson had the men's high single of 321 and Judy Lappage had the ladies' high single of 285. Mr. Thompson had the men's high triple of 706 and Mrs. Lappage had the high triple of 662 for the ladies. Other high games were rolled by Herb Kenyon 285, 223; Etoile Johnston 248; Winnie Boyd 238 and Kevin Hickey 236. COMMERCIAL LEAGUE Linda's Little Rascals have taken a commanding lead with 63 points, followed by Terry's Mrs. Ts with 53, Dylis' Dagwoods with 45, Pam's Polka -Roos with 40, Cathy's Chipmunks with 37 and Shari's Shirttails with 36. _. Linda Hickey had the ladies' high single of 220 and the high triple of 632 was rolled by Lynn Ohm. Kevin Hickey had the men's high single of 312 and the high triple of 659. Other .high games were rolled by Joe Brophy 208; Rod Hickey 204, 233; Carl Good 205 and Bob Pegg 206. LEGION MIXED The Essexes lead the league with 43 points, followed by the Mercs and Edsels with 41, the Impalas with 37, the Classics with 32 and the Tempos with 16. Jean King had the high, single of 260 for the -ladies and the high triple of 674. Willis Hall had the ' men's high single of 202 for the meg and the high triple of 539. Other high games were rolled by Florence Thomp- son 234; Shirley Storey 238, 227; Ada Aitchison 219 and Florence Delmage 232. pe Kinsrnen Bantams postdu AtomrsX play in three-garne Super Series The Wingham Kinsmen Bantams won three games last week, downing Listowel 6-1, Hanover 5-4 and Kin- cardine 5-3. The team visited Listowel Dec. 5 and returned home with a 6-1 win. The lone Listowel goal care from Craig Brisbin 46 seconds into winstreak to game. For a while it looked like Listowel would dominate the game. It took Wingham until the second period to find the net, when Corey McKee roared in to score unassisted. Terry Daer scored from :McKee and Jason Coultes to give Kin Bantams capture consolation trophy The defending champion Wingham Kinsmen Bantams traveled to Sutton last week to take part in the annual Ed Cryderman Tournament, which they had won last year. In the first game they came up on the short side of a 4-3 score to drop into the consolation round. Corey McKee and Paul Brophy were named the most. valuable players. Bradford 4, Wingham 3 Bradford had the first period its ,own way, scoring two unanswered goals, but Wingham bounced back early in the second to tie the match at two. The opposing team scored again late in the second to take a 3-2 lead. In the third, Wingham tied it again before Bradford scored the game -winner late in the period. McKee scored twice for Wingham and Bill Kinahan notched a single. Opti. Atoms play Listowel The Wingham Optimist Atoms played one of their better games of the season Saturday afternoon ,at Listowel. At the end of the first period Listowel led 2-1. The Wingham goal was scored by Jonathan Lane, on a pass from Jonathan Balzer. Listowel increased the lead to '4-1 in the second period. In the third, Ryan Deyell scored on a pass from Matthew Hunter. However as the period progressed the bigger Listowel team gradually wore down the local Atoms. The game ended with Listowel winning by a score of 8-2. Left -wingers Bart Cameron and Clement Wai played a strong game for Wingham. The Optimist Atoms will be at home to Mount Forest this Saturday afternoon at 3:30. Brownie Corner The Second Wingham Brownie Pack enrolled 13 Brownies recently. Thanks go to the parents for at- tending, Donna Skinn for serving, Lois Baynton for baking the two ,lo`vely cakes and Singing Owl for leading the sing -song. The first-year Brownies 'made a tidy -mirror chart, which they' will be checking off at Brownies for the next several'" meetings. The second -year Brownies' worked on good -turn skits and the third -year Brownies learned to sew on buttons. The following Brownies received the Skater's Badge: Mandy Anger, Becky Gilles- pie, • Melissa Greenaway, Leeanne Carter, Linda Hol- linger and Karen Schill. Andrea McBride received the Artist Badge and Erin Skinn, the Team Sport Badge, All Wingham Brownies will meet Friday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. at the church for the Christmas party. Don't forget your gifts for the gift exchange. Merry Christmas. Wingham 4, Gravenhurst 0 The first game played on the consolation side off the tournament saw both teams work hard. Jason Coultes scored the first goal with six seconds left in the first period. The second frame was scoreless. In the third period Coultes scored again on a play from Rick Leachman and Brophy. Two minutes later McKee scored from Terry Daer and Coultes, Then Kinahan wrapped up the game on a play from Chris Michie and McKee. Wingham 8, Tottenham 3 The team traveled to Sutton Dec. 8 to play in the consolation championship game, bringing home the pennant with an 8-3 victory over Tottenham. After one period the score was 2-0 as Brophy scored from Daer and Coultes. Then Michie scored from Kinahan and McKee with just seconds left on the clock in the first. In the second period the Wingham boys kept the scoring to themselves as Brophy scored from Daer and McKee scored unassisted in the last minute. In the third frame, Totten- ham opened the scoring with a diligent effort. Coultes made his move and potted a goal from Daer 'and Dave Heinmiller. Brophy scored again before Tottenham notched its second of the period. McKee and Brophy each netted one and Tottenham's. Darcy Ronan ended the scoring to make the final score 8-3 for Wingham. Wingham the lead before the end of two. Brophy scored from Dave Heinmiller and again from Coultes and McKee to open the third frame. McKee bounced one off the strings from Peter Strong before Coultes wound up the scoring from McKee and Brophy. Wingham 5, Hanover 4 Wingham hosted Hanover last week at the local arena. The local boys dominated the scoring in the first period and a half, netting three unanswered goals before John Birr scored for Hanover. In the third, Doersam and Brown evened the score at three. Both teams scored once before McKee scored from Brophy to give Wingham a 5-4 edge. Bill Kinahan, Chris Michie and Brophy all scored for Wingham. Dec. 3 the team thosted Kincardine in a regular league game. In a good game of end-to-end hockey -Kin- cardine could not get the puck past Wingham goalies Murray Foxton and Chris Fryfogle, both of whom stood up well to the big shooters from Kincardine. The Wingham Super X Atoms played three games last weekend in the annual Howick Atom Super Series. The boys played reasonably well, but found the com- petition strong. They recorded one win and two losses. Wingham 8, Blyth 2 The team was passing the puck well and the defence cleared the puck out of its own end effectively to score an 8-2 win over Blyth. Chris Heibein led the at- tack with a hat trick, while Brendan Magee and Jason Kregar added a pair of goals each. Marc Poulin added a single while assists went to Bradley Hunter, Kregar, Heibein and Gord Welch. ' In the- second game the boys dropped a 5-1 decision to Drayton, a team which was just too strong for the Super X squad: Ivan Skinn scored Wingham's only goal. In their next game the Atoms jumped into a 3-1 lead but saw it fade as they played too much as in- dividuals and forgot about team play. Kregar added a pair of goals and a single went to Poulin. Mike Drost and Poulin assisted on the goals. Each boy received a crest and a delicious lunch. Legion Peewees defeat Durham 7-3 The Winghaln Legion PeeWees hosted Durham last Tuesday evening and skated away with a 7-3 victory over the visitors. The score was tied at 2-2 at the end of the first period. However Wingham took over in the second frame, scoring four goals and adding another in the third. The game turned into a chippy affair in the final frame with Durham taking seven penalties and receiving 30 minutes overall. Wingham goal scorers were Rob MacKay and Jeff McKee with two, Todd Chadwick, Steve Michie; Don Heinmiller and Scott Neil with singles. Assists BANTAMS The Cokes lead the league with 40 points, followed by the Seven -Ups with 34, the Pepsis with 31, the Walter Root Beers with 28, the Coke Classics with 17 and the Cream Sodas with 16. Lori Morrison had the girls' high single of 144 and the high double of 254. Arley Pautler had the high single of 105 for the boys and the high double of 174. Other games of 80 and over were rolled by Lindsay Johnston 84; Stephanie Cleghorn 83; Erin Skinn 98; Danielle Richardson 98; Lori Morrison 115; Melissa Bieman 100; Ansley Simpson 127; Jason Richardson 96; Scott Schiestel 81; Jeremy Hickey 81; Paul Deslauriers 96; Ryan Robinson 89; Ryan Moffatt 89 and D. J. Morrison 96. JR. BANTAMS & JUNIORS The Snorks lead the league with 44 points, followed by the Pussy Cats with 38, the Muppet Babies and the Wuzzels with 25, the GI Joes with 20 and the Masks with 14. Sherry Dekker had the high single of 200 for the girls and the high double of 343. David Bower had the boys' high single of 163 and the high double of 244. Other games of 125 and over were rolled by Sherry Dekker 143; Dean Vincent 130; Steven.. Marks 128 and Rob Bower 130. SR. JUNIORS & SENIORS The Fuzzies lead the league with 55 points, followed by the Alphabata with 45, the Slinkys with 36, the TLCs with 35, the Nimrods with 32 and the Commandos with 29. Jane Bateson had the girls' high single of 235 and the high triple of 544, while Tom Darling had the boys' high single of 245 and David. MacRae had the high triple of 616. Other games of 150 and over were rolled by Debbie Morrison 150; Tammy Cleghorn 157, 177; Lori Tiffin 191, 156; Rhonda Leachman 188, 174; Rhonda English 181; Jane Bateson 201; Kevin Dekker 195;Jason Balzer 166; Dean Tolton 150; Jason Steffler 170, 156; Ian MacKay 173, 169 and David MacRae 203, 188, 225. Erin Skinn was the Nov- ember Bantam bowler -of - the -month with the high single of 130. Todd Harrison was the Junior bowler -of -the - month with 186 and Lori Tiffin was Senior bowler -of - the -month with 302. Billy McGrath continued his steady play in the Wingham net, making several key saves. The Legion PeeWees' next home game was played Dec. 10 against Kincardine. The team plays an exhibition. game this Thursday evening at 7 o'clock against the undefeated . Howick team. Wingham team runners-up at bonspiel The Wingham Curling Club's entry in a ladies' bonspiel held last Tuesday through Thursday at Dur- ham wound up runners-up at the district provincial finals. A team from Ripley took top spot and will compete in Tillsonburg this Friday. Members of the Wingham team are Anna Goodall, Donelda Pearson, Mary Wil- liams and Marg Allison. Wingham went into the finals undefeated, however the local ladies were defeated 10-4 last Thursday morning by Ripley and 9-5 last Thursday afternoon for. Ripley to capture the division championship. A total' of nine teams competed in addition to Wingham and Ripley. Other teams were entered from Belmore, Durham, Goder- ich, Harriston, Kincardine, Seaforth and Vanastra. Still looking for a gift?
