Home for seniors opens at FORDWICH — More than 75 visitors dropped in at "Gracehaven" during the weekend when an open house was held to mark the opening of this home for seniors in the. community. The home, which can accommodate eight or nine persons, is situated on Albert St. East. Grace Sanderson, who operates the home, will be assisted by her daughter Lisa. A Registered Nurses Assistant, Mrs. Sanderson has six years of experience working in a nursing home and for three years worked out of the Wingham office of Town and Country Home- makers. She says she decided to open a residence in Ford- wich so local people who are unable to continue, living in their own homes would not have to leave friends and New nursing director is hired at Callander BRUSSELS — The Callan- der Nursing Home welcomes Mrs. Yvonne Struke, its new director of nursing. Mrs. Struke is from Hanover, where she was employed as head nurse in the chronic care unit of the Hanover hospital. A number of children from the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship sang hymns at the Nov. 24 morning service at the nursing home and in the afternoon. Donald Dunbar entertained at the piano, after which the Mennonite choirs from Ethel. and Zion Churches made presentations. ;l Debbie Trollope led the Monday bingo recently with Bill Close winning the trophy again and Bessie Mc- - Cutcheon a close second by one game. Euchre was enjoyed on Tuesday with the residents participating. . Syfnpathy' is extended to Mrs. Adeline Smith in the passing of her sister, Mrs. Sally Orwell. ' Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Hayward visited recently with their grandmother, Mrs. Stella Winn. Unit holds dinner and program Fordwich GORRIE — Unit Four of the United Church Women held a pot luck dinner in the church on Thursday at 6 p.m. Miss Margaret Dane and Mrs. Raymond Gowdy were in charge of the Christmas program. Mrs. Gowdy read scripture from the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke, which was interspersed with singing of 'carols with Mrs. Harold Hyndrnan at the piano. Rev. Don Pugh spoke on "What Is Right with the United Church Women". Mrs. Pugh installed •the officers for 1986. Mrs. Simmons conducted the business. Plans were' made to . remember the shutins and a donation was made to the general UCW. Mrs. Simmons then relinquished her office to Mrs. Johnston and the meeting closed with prayer. The January meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Allan Hyndman on January at 8:15. "When my neighbor was in this position I thought I might be able to do something for her and others in Fordwich and have a new career for myself." Mrs. Sanderson has pre- served the home -like at- mosphere of the house. The kitchen has a dining area and an adjoining space for conversation and tele- vision watching. Comfort - .able chairs are grouped around a woodstove which will be used for bread - making. Mrs. Sanderson admits she knows little about the history of the house. She is hoping local residents can provide some information. For the open house, Gracehaven was decorated with floral arrangements and Christmas ornaments. Visitors were greeted by Mrs. Sanderson, Lisa San- derson, Mrs. Sanderson's husband and their neighbor Stephanie Long. (Staff Photo) Trinity ACW opens meeting with dinner FORDWICH — The Trinity Anglican Church Women held their Christmas meeting in the church basement last Thursday evening, commencing with a turkey dinner at 7 p.m. Mrs. Glenn Johnston was in charge. Following the dinner Mrs. Johnston was thanked by Mrs. J W. Daunt on behalf of the group. Mrs. Doug Bunker welcomed the 40 in at- tendance and ' Mrs. Alma Hargrave led in devotions with Mrs. Bill Sothern assisting. The roll call was answered with a gift for the Fordwich nursing home. Mrs. Harold Foster reported that 14 bales have been packed and sent north. The ladies also were reminded to remember the shut-ins at Christmas with Mrs. Wally Nixon and Mrs. Daunt to be in charge of gifts. Secret Pals names were exchanged for the coming year. Mrs. Bunker, president for the past year, was thanked for her leadership. Mrs. Daunt will be president for 1986. A Christmas party for the children is scheduled. for Dec. 15: Rev. William Gray has announced the Christ- mas Eve service will be held in Trinity Church at 8:30 p.m. and church members and friends will be caroling on Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Those interested are asked to meet at the church building. Carols were sung, led by Mrs. Ian Marsh and Elva Foster. The meeting closed with a prayer and gift ex - .change.' The ladies also exchanged cookies and recipes. White -gift service is held at United Church BRUSSELS - The 1985 White -Gift Service was conducted Sunday by the children of the United Church. The youngsters entered from the back of the church and proceeded to reserved seats at the front. Following the call to Belgrave euchre Nine tables were in play at the weekly euchre which was held in the WI Hall Wednes- day evening, December 4. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. Pearl Shiell; novelty lady, Mrs. Garner Nichol- son; low lady, Mrs. Verene Bone; high man, Leslie Vin- cent; novelty man, ,Lewis Stonehouse; low man, Mel Jacklin. There will be euchre again this Wednesday starting at 8:go._ pm. Everyone is wel- come. S. GEORGE BROWN Gorrie Personal Notes Mr. and ' Mrs. James Alcorn spent the weekend in London visiting Mr. and Mrs. Doug Alcorn, Kris and Cheri, and attended a concert presented by the General Motors Choir of Oshawa in Saunders Secondary School. Mrs. Olivia Detlor, a sister of Mrs. James Alcorn, who is in the- choir, joined then -orr Saturday for dinner. Mr. and Mrs. George Brown were guests at the Scheeringa-Purdon wedding in Chalmers Presbyterian -Churclr, WhiteThumb-, mr Saturday and the reception in . the Community Centre, Lucknow. This was followed by the Grades 3 and 4 class presenting the Advent Wreath. The senior choir sang a song, as did the nursery and primary Sunday School classes. The senior class sang "Mary Had a Baby" and the carol "On a Day When Men Were Counted". The story presentation was "Only - a Stable". The presentation of white gifts was held and Mrs. Bonnie Jacklin favored the congregation with a solo. A prayer and the singing of "Away in a Manger" followed. After the service the , congregation joined in fellowship. at . a pot -luck' dinner and the children were presented with Christmas treats.
