Computer Literacy For

Prerequisite: None
This course provides an introduction to
computers from the point of view of a
manager or supervisor. The course cov-
ers electronic spreadsheets for financial
analysis, electronic data management
(databases), word processing software
and other areas of interest to managers.
Each section has hands-on work on the
College's computers. In addition, the
course covers the basic elements of
computers and some of the jargon.
The course will be of interest to owners,
managers and supervisors who wish to
learn how to apply computer technology
to running a modern business.

Prerequisites: Computer Literacy for the
Office or Computer Literacy for Manage-
ment; an understanding of basic ac-
counting principles.
This course is an overview of accounting
and business applications for comput-
ers. Areas to be considered will include:
setting up a general ledger/journal on a
computer, accounts receivable, ac-
counts payable, and inventory control
using a variety of apprcjaches. Hands-on
experience will be provided on the Col-
lege's computers.

of Word Processing such as general

Microcomputers, Small Business
Applications - 2330010 A
This course is designed as an introduc-
tion to computers for the business envi-
ronment. Topigs will include basic termi-
nology, software applications, and hard-
ware selection. Discussion will focus on
the decision methodology for the evalua-
tion, purchasing and implementation of
small business systems: Although not a
hands-on course, participants should
come away with sufficient knowledge to
feel comfortable in assessing and imple-
menting a variety of computer applica-
tions.

COMPUTER STUDIES
The courses listed below teach some of
the basics of programming computers.
These courses will be of interest to peo-
ple with home computers as well as peo-
ple who wish to program simple busi-
ness applications. For other computer.
related courses see Computer Literacy
and Supervision and Management (On-
tario Management Development Pro-
gram).
Since programming computers involves
extensive work with typewriter -style key-
boards, some proficiency at typing is an
asset for programming courses.
Note: Students with no background in
Computers who wish to learn computer
programming should enrol in the Com-
puter Fundamentals Course before pro-
ceeding to Programming Courses.
Students will be instructed on the follow-
ing equipment: Doon Campus: IBM PC's
or Hewlett Packard Terminals; Cam-
bridge, Clinton and Waterloo Campuses:
Olivetti Microcomputers; Guelph and
Stratford Campuses: Xerox Microcom-
puters.

If you know little about computers and
simply want to become computer 'li-
terate' or if you want to gain the back-
ground knowledge you will need to be
successful in a computer programming
course, then this is the course for you.
You will study the history, components,
function and application of computers in
today's business. Other topics include
software, programming languages and
operating environments. You will have
an opportunity to use a computer termi-
nal to develop simple programs related
to the concepts you have studied. Upon
completion, in addition to having an un-
derstanding of computers, the terminolo-
gy related to them and how they work,
you will understand more fully the activi-
ties, machinery and personnel found in a
data processing department. You will be
well prepared to pursue r programming
coarses, if desired.
