EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION RESOURCE
TEACHER PROGRAM (For Part
Time Students) C
This program is designed to provide
Post -Diploma Early Childhood Education
with the knowledge and techniques nec-
essary to work with children who have
special needs. Graduates of, this pro-
gram will be qualified to become
Resource Teachers as defined by the
(proposed) Day Nurseries Act. The
curriculum will focus on integration and
programming for individuals and groups.
The graduate will be able to help each
child and his/her family lead a full, more
productive and independent life in the
community.
Courses are conducted in the evenings
and are designed to meet the needs of
mature students who possess an Early
Childhood Education Diploma or equiva-
lent and are presently working in the
field of Early Childhood Education. Stu-
dents will require approximately two and
one-half years to complete this part time
program.
Field placement experiences are a re-
quired part of the program. These expe-
riences take place during the day and
will be arranged on an individual basis
by the Program Coordinator.
Program Eligibility:
1. Early Childhood Education Diploma
or equivalent.
2. Previous experience with children
-who are developmentally delayed, as
defined by the Day Nurseries Act.
3. One post diploma year working with
children in a group care setting.

in the completed Early Childhood Ed-
ucation Resource Teacher Program
Questionnaire.
2. Assessment of personal suitability
through an interview with program
personnel.
3. Assessment of the intormation con-
tained in the completed Conestoga
College medical forms.
Program Admission:
Applicants will be admitted to this pro-
gram based on program eligibility re-
quirements and the applicant assess-
ment results.

REGISTERED NURSE -
CRITICAL CARE NURSING
PROGRAM C
This 395 hour program is designed to
provide registered nurses with specialty
knowledge and skills in critical care
nursing. Independent study, classroom

participation and supervised clinical ex-
perience will encourage students to uti-
lize the nursing process as a framework
for practice. Foundations of Critical Care
I content will include professionalism
and leadership, psychosocial response
to critical illness, crisis management,
communications, ethics and legalities as
well as patient teaching and rehabilita-
tion. Based on the broad principles of
homeostasis presented in Foundations
of Critical Care 11, students will develop
indepth knowledge and skills in care of
the critically ill patient through study of
pulmonary, cardiovascular, neurologi-
cal, renal and gastrointestinal modules.
Clinical experience will take place in a
critical care unit and will be arranged on
an individual basis by the program Co-
ordinator. Through a flexible curriculum
design that integrates the distance edu-
cation mode, the program will meet the
learning needs of both experienced criti-
cal care nurses and those who may wish
to move into this specialty area: The
courses are conducted in the evenings,
and students will require approximately
two and one half years to complete the
part-time program.
Unless otherwise indicated, in the course
description, the cost of textbooks re-
quired for a course is riot included in the
fee.

Current College of Nurses of Ontario
Certificate Cif Competence as a Regis-
tered Nurse.
Applicant Assessment:
- Preference will be given to applicants
who have been employed in a critical
care or active treatment setting during
the past five years.
Assessment of suitability through a
personal interview with program per-
sonnel.
- Assessment of information contained
in the completed Registered Nurse -
Critical Care Nursing Program Ques-
tionnaire.
Program Admission:
Applicants will be admitted to this pro-
gram based on the program eligibility re-
quirements and the applicant assess-
ment results.
Applications are accepted on an on-
going basis.
Registration in any. of the following
courses can only occur after accept-
ance into the program.
Foundations Of Critical
Critical Care I - 3050090
This course introduces the conceptual
threads of diagnostic studies, pharma-
cology, nursing process, psychosocial
needs of asepsis: Emphasis is placed on
professionalism and leadership in crisis
management and the role of the critical
care nurse in rehabilitation. Communica-
tion skills with the patient, family, and
team members are developed both in the
classroom and clinical setting.

Foundations Of Critical
Care II - 3050100
This course provides a basis for the the-
oretical body systems and clinical com-
ponents that follow. Topics covered in-
clude: Cellular Homeostasis, Hematolo-
gy, Endocrinology and Shock. intrave-
nous equipment and therapy as well as
central venous pressure line mainte-
nance and measurement are included.

Pulmonary - 3050130
Pulmonary physiology and physiologic
changes that occur in pathological
states are studied, including respiratory
failure, asthma, chronic obstructive pul-
monary disease, shock lung, pulmonary
edema, and ā€˛pulmonary embolus. The
management of patients with acute res-
piratory failure, acute lung disease,
chronic pulmonary disease as well as
the physiologic effects of ventilator
therapy on the major body systems is
emphasized.

Pulomonary Assessment And
Lab -3050140
This 22 -hour course includes ventilator
management, positioning, airways, suc-
tioning, chest physiotherapy, oxygen de-
livery systems, and' chest tube manage-
ment. Assessment of the patient with
respiratory disease is demonstrated and
practiced, with emphasis on physiologic
monitoring, measurement and assess-
ment of the thorax and lungs, and relat-
ed systemic changes.
