Reading something some- times gives you a clearer idea about specific matters. I hope this column gives our readers many ideas thatc•an help them financially Almost 25. years ago 1 read a little statement in some magazine. Maybe it was Reader's Digest, and if not, a similar type publica- tion. It was talking about the so-called stock market, and went on to say: The stock market is like a yo-yo in the hands•of a man climbing stairs. The biggest problem with most people is that they keep their eyes only on the yo-yo and forget he's .climbing stairs." A simple analogy, but it really hit home. i still re- member it today. The Four -Year Cycle Let's analyze it. It is very true, the stock market has up and downs. History tells us there is an -average of three years up and one year down in a four-year cycle. True, in 1973 and 1974 we had almost two "down" years, but they were fol- lowed by six rather fantas- tic "up" years. So.... for the eight years it still averaged three years up to one year down. That is theyo-yo part that, everyone watches. But, despite the "one -in - four' onsin- four' down year,. the_ yo-yo's ... and ADVERTISEMENT IT'S YOUR MONEY Paul J. Rockel market on average con- tinues to go up. During the depression of the 30's, the 1)ow-Jones average was in the (00 range. It hit 1,000 for a couple of days in 1968, and then fell off. Today it is in the 1,300 and 1,40(1 range, and many top fore- casters are indicating it should reach 3,000 in the next five or six years. As we said, the market is always averaging up, des- pite the fact that there are ups and downs in that over- age. This is the "man• climbing -stairs" part of the market. Afraid -of the Market Let's face it, even when the vu -yo was in the man's hand, at the top of 'the string when 'the average w,is 100, it was still well• above where the yo-yo was at the bottom of the string after the Dow passed the 1,000 mark, because the man had climbed many stairs to get there. Most of us are afraid, "be- cause it goes down". We forget that the up and down's of the market place `(the yo-yo part) always carry us to new highs (the stair part). - Many of us are afraid of the market, because we don't know or understand 11. The special four- hour miniseries will be broadcast in two parts: Monday, December 9, 8 10 p.m. and Tuesday, Decem- ber 10, 8 - 10 p.m. Performer Steve Allen wrote 19 special songs .and novelty numbers that high- light the traditional Carroll" story and Emmy Award- winning composer Mort Stevens provided the musi- cal score. Allen also stars with a large cast of interna- tionally recognizable per- formers along with newcom- er Natalie Gregory, the 10 - year -old title star. Pulitzer . prize-winning author Paul Zindel's script combines two Carroll clas- sics, "Alices's Adventures in Wonderland'" (1865) and its sequel done seven years later, "Through the Looking Glass The miniseries will follow the original storyline -beginning with Alice's fall down the "rabbit hole". it will then proceed on a merry, madcap adventure leading to encounters with Carroll's cast of incredible . cha-;+racterS-... - ALICE IN WONDERLAND --Natalie Gregory and Red Buttons portray Alice and the White Rabbit, re- spectively in this four-hour, .two-part miniseries tele- casting on CTV December 9 and 10.
