Dr.
crcerf
The Wingham branch of
the Canadian Cancer Society
held a public meeting last
Monday in the Nursing
Assistants' Training Centre
at the Wingham and District
Hospital. Although members
were few, those in at-
tendance certainly benefited
from the presentation given
by Dr. Walter Wong of
Wingham.
Dr. Wong compared
cancer to the(erab which has
many feet and claws
enabling it to move and
reach out in all directions.
Cancer is an unusual and
invasive multiplication of
cells, he said, which can
involve every tissue in the
body,
The causes of cancer are
innumerable and can include
trauma, viruses, chronic
infections, . constant ex-
posure to sun, heat, drugs
and certain foods. Cancer is
not passed on genetically,
but there can be familiar

traits in families.
Today's lifestyle can be
associated with the causes of
cancer. Smoking, diet and
hygiene are some con-
tributors to cancer in the
modern world. An increase
in smoking by young women
has increased the number of
cases of lung cancer in
women, Dr. Wong reported.
Eating uncooked foods and
red meats to excess may
cause cancer of the colon.
Personal cleanliness should
be practised daily, he added.
Individuals must change
the bad habits- in their
lifestyles in order to protect
their health. The doctor also
urged his audience to watch
for changes in body func-
tions, the formation of
lumps, large or small and
chronic skirl' irritations.
These all are signs that
people should be on the look-
out for and should seek
medical attention if they
occur.
1KARQL GALBRAITH and Frank Batty were married
Oct. 12, 1985, in the Wingham United Church: Karol is
the daughter of Bradley and Evelyn Galbraith of RR 3,
Wingham and Frank is the son of William and Helen Bat-
ty of Meaford. The couple is residing at RR 2, Meaford.
Regular medical examin-
ations also are in order.
New studies are being
done in surgical procedures,
x-ray and chemotherapy and
radiation treatments, Dr.
Wong reported.
He said all people should
make themselves aware of
the causes and prevention of
cancer and change any part
of their lifestyle which could
contribute to the possibility
of developing cancer.
Barry Reid, president of
the Wingham branch,
thanked Dr. Wong.
• Prior to the doctor's
presentation, the president

craft sale and tea held at the Wingham Armouries and sponsored by the Wingham and
Area Day Centre for the Homebound. Jenni Jorritsma of Wingham bought a ticket,
