In the past I recall read- ing in your column instruc- tions for making "logs" from old newspapers. I have mis- placed these. Could you run this information again?— Mrs. I. L. A. I would be happy to in- - elude instructions for those excellent logs that are a good example of recycling made practical and easy. They are fairly easy to make from, rolled -up newspapers soaked in a salt solution and thoroughly dried. To make the logs you only need these items: Newspapers, magazines and scrap paper of all types (a good use for junk mail). Two pounds each of coarse salt and borax. Heavy twine. Transparent tape. A 4- or 5 -gallon non-metal- lic container — earthenware, enamelware or plastic not apers lo s1 affected by boiling water are recommended. First make the solution. Put the salt and borax into the container. Pour in 2 gal- lons of boiling water; stir vigorously to dissolve the solids as much as possible. Let the solution cool, stirring from time to time. Now make the logs. Use newspapers alone, or news- papers with a rolled -up magazine core, or news- papers with scrap papers distributed evenly between the larger sheets, or maga- zines alone. Whatever you use, make a 'paper pile that is thicker in the center than at the ends. Start at one end and roll up very, very tightly to form a log about 3 inches in diameter. The tighter the roll the denser the finished log will be and the longer it will burn in your fireplace. To soak the logs, stand them on end in the solution in the container. Put in as many as you can without crowding or causing over- flow. The solution should rise to the top of the container; if it does not, add warm water to fill. Let the logs soak for about 24 hours. Add 2 quarts of warm water and turn the logs upside down. Let soak, turning several times, for two or three days or until a11, liquid has been absorbed. Remove from the contain- er and lay on paper in a warm place; let dry thoroughly, about two weeks. You can also make paper "kindling" by crumpling single sheets of newspaper. Dip them into the solution prior to soaking the logs. Re- move and squeeze tightly. Set aside in a warm place to dry thoroughly. Use your newspaper logs just as you would use regular logs in your fireplace. Q. I would like to know if there is any way to• remove mildew spots from masonite siding. Painting over them doesn't work. A. The mildew is caused by too much moisture and will continue to recur as long as too much moisture is present. To remove the mil- dew now present, scrub with a solution of 1 cup trisodium phoshate and 1 cup of house- hold bleach mixed with 1 gallon of warm water. Use a stiff brush. Rinse with plenty of clear water. Painting with a mildew - resistant paint should help. However, you should try to eliminate someof the sources of too much moist- ure. Trees and shrubbery too close to the house can pre- vent proper ventilation and drying of the wall. Regular sprinkling of plants and lawn areas can cause a problem if the wall .is getting soaked each time. Check drainage so that all the water drains away from the, wall and foundation. Q. How. can I remove soot from my open fireplace fire bricks? A. Fire brick being soft and absorbent will be diffi- cult to clean. Brush off as much of the soot as possible with a stiff .brush. Then try the following in an obscure corner. Wet the brick with clean water and scrub with a mechanic's 'hand soap con- taining fine sand, using plenty o water. Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove all traces of soap. If results are not success- ul, it may be necessary to go over the dry brick with a coarse sandpaper., This is a difficult, tedious job and may not ,be worth the f 1 Crossroads—Nov, 27, 1985—Page 5A COPACABANA—Barry Manilow and Annette O'Toole star in this musical comedy -for -television based on Manilow's hit song of the same name, to be telecast on CTV Nov. 30, at 9 p.m. Attention all 14 -year-olds!
