The Kincardine Kings
showed why they are un-
defeated in WOAA Inter-
mediate hockey this season,
taking two games from the
Wingham Royals by lopsided
scores on the weekend.
However in fairness to the
Royals, a raft of early -
season injuries has left them
desperately shorthanded and
forced them to play. with
makes Lift line combinations
which change from game to
game.
Despite this handicap the
Royals didn't give up the
points without a fight. Led by
the strong efforts of Ken
Cousins and Dave Stephen-
son, they actually outplayed
the Kings for a substantial
part of both games.
In each case one bad
period led to the Royals'
demise, as the swift -skating
Kings were quick to pounce
on any mistakes and turn
them into goals.
After having been bounced
10-4 at home Friday night,
the Royals traveled to Kin-
cardine for a rare Saturday
night rematch.
With .only 10 skaters
dressed and trainer Alex
Henderson pressed into duty
as a back-up to goaltender
Ron Smith, the Royals still
managed to make a game of
it, hanging onto a 2-1 lead
after two periods on goals by
Stephenson ant Cousins.
A two -minute elbowing
penalty to Ken Higgins early
in the third period proved
costly, however, as it took
only 15 seconds for Derrick

Burrows to score on the
power play to even the score
at two.
With the Royals still
reeling, Burrows tallied
again 21 seconds later to.
send the Kings ahead 3-2. Bill
Brophy, playing in his third
game with the Royals, got
that one back less than a
minute later to knot the
score at three.
However the goals got
Kincardine rolling and the
Kings came back with four
more within a span of less
than three minutes tograb a
7-3 lead: Ed Young scored
the first and fourth goals of
the outburst, with Dennis
Burrows and Luke Frawley
picking up the other two.
Craig Weise's goal with
2:28 remaining made it 8-3
before Stephenson's second
goal of the night, this one
with two seconds left on the
clock, made the final score8-
4.
Breakdowns in coverage
and the inability to win key
faceoffs in their own end led
to the. Royals' demise in the
third period. The first two
penalties they took in the
period also proved very
costly, leading to power play
goals which got Kincardine
rolling.
Although the team was
again short on bodies, it ;did
not seem to hurt unless the
players became mentally
tired. Paul Montgomery
filled in well on defence
while the line of Cousins,
Stephenson and Brophy got
all the goals.

Ron Smith played a good
game and had no chance on
most of the Kings° goals.
This Friday night will
feature the renewal of an old
rivalry when the Lucknow
Lancers come to town to take
on the Royals at 8:30. These
two teams always provide a
good show and it should be
an entertaining match -up,
particularly if Larry Lane
and Bill Kerr can get some of
their walking wounded back
into the line-up.
At the moment the Royals
have enough bodies on the
injury list to fill a small
oyals
hospital, with regulars Brian
TenPas, Randy Clarke,
Sandy Fitzgerald, Mark
Foxton and Dave Golley all
on the limp. Clarke and
Foxton (knee injuries) might
be back in time for this
weekend. However TenPas
(knee) will probably be out
of action for another month.
Fitzgerald is recovering
from a broken jaw suffered
when he was high-sticked at
Teeswater, while Golley
suffered a knee injury in
Friday night's game against
Kincardine.
There is no Sunday game
this weekend.
Wingham Ironman
are now the Jokers
There has been much
speculation around town that
the Wingham entry in the
OHA Junior C hockey group
has undergone a name.
change. For once you can
believe what you hear. The
next time you see the local
lads battling the opposition
in their familiar blue -and -
white sweaters, the name on
the sweaters will be the
Wingham Jokers.
Contrary to some of their
detractors, the name change
has nothing to do with the
club's poor record this
season. Rather it is that Joe
Kerr ("Jo-ker") of Wingham
has made a generous offer to
act as the clubrs major
sponsor for the 1985-86
season. In appreciation to
Mr. Kerr, the name has been
changed, effective im-
mediately.
