THE QUEEN'S GUINEAS—This has been quite a year for Kim and Debbie Rintoul of
St. Helens, climaxing with 16 -year-old Kim winning the coveted Queen's Guineas in
the 4-H beef competition at the Royal Winter Fair while Debbie, 14, who was too
young to enter the Guineas, was reserve champion showman in the beef cattle corm -
petition and also won a championship in the open Charolais class. Kim is the first
'moron County 4-H member in 30 years to win the Queen's Guineas, the highest 4-H
beef club award in Ontario. The last to accomplish this was Murray Gatint in 1955.
The girls, whose older sister Carol. also was a five -time winner of beef showmanship
at the Royal, are the daughters of Lee and Lila Rintoul.
Winning Queen's Guineas
will be tough act to follow
For the Lee Rintoul family
of St. Helen's., 1985 will be a
hard year to top.
The three Rintoul
daughters, Carol, Kim and
Debbie, have long estab-
lished a family tradition of
bringing home ribbons. and
trophies from 4-H beef shows
across the county and
province.
However this was the year
when 16 -year-old Kim won
the big one breaking a 30
year Huron County drought
by winning the prestigious
Queen's Guineas , com-
petition at the Royal Winter
Fair in Toronto. '
The last Huron .4-H
member to win the Guineas,
•
the highest 4-H beef club
award in Ontario; was
Murray Gaunt,the former
MPP and now farm editor at
CKNX. Interestingly, Mr.
Gaunt. was a member of the
same 4-H club — the, Luck -
now Beef Club — and had. the
same address RR 2,
Lucknow — as the Rintouls.
Kim's Angus-Chianina
cross steer, Gus, won the
championship in his weight
class and won againin the
,judging. against aft other
champions • and reserve
champions at the Royal,
before being purchased by
Knob Hill Farms for $12.50 a
pound and then donated to
Sick Children's Hospital in
•
Toronto. Kim's picture will
hang in the lobby of the hos-
pital, her mother reported..
Gus, who just made the
grade by gaining an average
• df 2.32 pounds per day from
May 1 to Oct. 1, weighed
1,195 pounds at the show and -
was up to 1,210 by the time he
was sold.
Debbie, 14, was too young
to enter the Guineas com-
petition this year, but her 4-H
steer won .the Charolais
championship in the open
class. She also won the
reserve champion showman-
ship award, competing
.against the top showmen
from 35 other counties across
Ontario.
Carol, 19, a five -time.
winner in beef showmanship
at the Royal, .was invited to
be a judge of this year's
Hereford showmanship
class.
While the Royal was un-
doubtedly the highlight of the
year for the girls, it was by
no means their only ac-
complishment. They wrap-
ped up the year by collecting
an astounding 16 awards
among the three during the
Huron County 4-H Awards
Night at Clinton last Friday.
