at Wingham Legion banquet
The Wingham Leg

Remembrance Day bang
and dance last Saturd
evening, Nov. 9. Gu
speaker for the event

Paul's Anglican Church
Wingham, a Legion mem
and one of the padres of
local branch.
This being the Legion's
diamond jubilee year, some
awards were given out to
members who have con-
tributed countless hours of
hard work and years of
dedicated service to the
Legion. Eight of these
awards were Diamond
Jubilee Medals. Three were
pins for 40 years of con-
tinuous service to the Legion
and one award was given to
James H. Currie, a charter
member of the Wingham
Legion, for 48 years of long
service and generosity.
It was noted that Mr.
Currie has assisted the
branch quietly over the
years with financial aid and
through its community
projects. He also has been a
staunch supporter of
veterans and veterans'
programs.
Forty -year pins were

Casemore, John "Ace"
Bateson and Fred Mellor.

Bill Elston and Tom Miller,

Community Centre. The two
gentleman are retiring -from
municipal politics after:

many years. Ladies are
asked to bring lunch. _..
The 4-H achievement night
will be held Nov. 27 at the
community centre, starting
at7p.m.
Mrs. Florence McLellan, a
former resident of Brussels
and now residing in Listowel,
is a patient in the Listowel
hospital..
—Doug Rathbun has 39
years of service in the
Legion and was branch
treasurer for over 20 years.
He served on the executive
committee for many years
and was on the bingo com-
mittee;
—Glenn Sinnamon has
served the Wingham Legion
Branch for 39 years and is -a
past president. He still is
active in the branch and. a
member of its bar com-
mittee. He also is a Legion
trustee and has spent long
hours tending bar and
working on the bingo com-
mittee;
—Willis Hall also has 39
years of service in the
Legion, including two terms
as president. He is currently
the bar committee chair-
man, has run many bingos,
was color sergeant for many
years and has served on the
executive committee for
many years;
—Clarence Ohm has a
total of 38 years of Legion
service behind him and also
• is a past president of Branch
•180. He currently is property
chairman and is community
service fund chairman. Mr.
Ohm has sseryed on the
Legion's executive, bar and
special committees;
—Ken Simmons has
served the Legion for 38
years as well. He was
secretary of the • Wingham
branch for over 20 years and
worked hard for a number of
years on the executive and
bingo committees. At one.__
time, Mr. Simmons even
produced the monthly
bulletins at the branch;
—Verdun "Dutch"
Ducharme has 36 years of
service in the Legion and
currently is chairman of the
aging -veteran committee.
He has served on the
executive committee and

committees throughout the
years, as well as donating
countless hours to painting

ar)tthe old Legion Halls;
—Don Farnell has 24 years
of service to the Legion. He
has held an active position
most of those years and
currently is youth education
chairman. He also has
helped out on the executive
committee, at bingos, craft
sales and flea markets.
Winners of the Legion
draw held Nov. 9 were
Murray Elston, Wingham,
$100; Ron Zimmer,
Wingham, $50 and Elsie
McKague, Wingham, $25.
Branch members and
members of the Legion
Ladies' Auxiliary marched
to the Salvation Army
Citadel for a church parade
service. They were joined by
members of Squadron 543 of
the Wingham Air Cadets and
the drum corps of the
Wingham Optimist Band.
There was an excellent
turn -out of members for the
service. Capt. Borden
Linkletter, another Legion
padre, welcomed the Legion
men and women and the air
cadets. Lieut. -Col. W.
Hammond conducted the.
service.
Planning grant
given to county
A community planning
grant of $27,283 has been
awarded to the County of
Huron, Ontario Minister of
Municipal Affairs Bernard
Grandmaitre announced last
week.
Mr. Grandmaitre said the
grant will be used by the
county to prepare an in-
dustrial land use and op-
portunities study.
Community planning
grants are designed to en-
courage municipalities to
resolve land use planning
issues to reflect municipal
and economic priorities.
The grants also may be
used for special studies .to
develop community im-
provement policies; to
determine the feasibility of
using data processing
technology in the local
planning process and to
assist in implementing the
Planning -Act.
Michie heads
cancer society
George Michie of Belgrave
has been named .the new
preslident of. the Huron
County wing of the cancer
society, replacing retiring
president Mel Farnsworth of
Goderich.
