wall can be a good solution.
Try to .arrange the furni-
ture so there is a convenient
traffic pattern through the
room. First plot out your
room on graph paper, indi-'
eating where the windows
and doors are. Then when
you go shopping for new
furniture, ask for some in-
terior design advice. Often
stores provide this with the
purchase of your furniture.
Because you are renting,
you need to decide whether
you want to put money into
the house or into accessories.
I would guess the latter
would be the better choice.
There are many ways you
can add decorating drama to
a rather dull room. Frame a -
large piece of handsome fab-
ric on a stretcher and hang
as a picture. Repeat the fab-
ric in a skirted table in the
room, some pillows for your
brown sofa and mats for pic-
tures. Be certain when you
choose this fabric, it has a
touch of brown and gold in it,
so the overall effect is one of
good planning.
HANDSOME BACKGROUND—Plush carpeting and
interestingly textured grasscloth create a handsome

Go with tradition
By Barbara Hartung
Q. I am moving my office
! to new quarters in an older
building with an especially
good location. The walls are
badly scarred by small
cracks that have been filled.
The floors are asphalt tile in
a light brown simulated cork
pattern.
I want to create an inti-
mate and traditional atmos-
phere in my office for myself
and my clients who come for
financial counseling. Please
suggest some ways to update
a rather rundown space.
I have a lovely old mahog-
any desk I want to keep and
some rather unattractive
dark green filing cabinets
that I need for storage. — R.
C. B.
A. Among the most dra-
matic changes you can make
are to 'the walls and floors.
Why not cover the walls in a
trailored natural grasscloth
that provides an interesting
texture without introducing
color or pattern. Artwork
and wall accessories will •
look elegant against this
backdrop.
• Carpet 'the floor with a
solid color — perhaps a na-
tural beige in a plush for a
luxurious feel or a flat woven
design for a more tailored
look. Your dark mahogany
desk should look lovely in
this setting.
To improve theappear-
ance of your:dark green fil-
ing cabinets, have therm .
spray painted the color of
your walls. Or if you feel es-
pecially energetic, cover
them with the wall covering.
Add a liberal accent of
leather or leatherlike ma-
terials and some shiny brass.
This will enhance the tradi-
tional ambience you desire.
Q. I need some advice
about our dining-livingroom
area.
At one end I. have a card
table and four chairs in one
corner and a carved Oriental
bar in the other corner. Be-
tween the two on one wall is
an etagere with •books and
plants.
This wall looks so bare.
Would an arrangement of
pictures by suitable? We
must have the card table as
it is in use all of the time. —
E.W.
A. I sympathize with you
about needing your card ta-
ble and chairs. We have a
game table and four chairs
in one end of our living room
and this furniture gets con-
stant use.
A game table instead of a
card table, however, might
give you a more substantial
look and add some design
quality to that part of your
room. Or if you don't want to
make that kind of invest-
ment you' might consider a
fabric cover for your card
table to give it the appear-
ance of more permanence.
Choose the fabric carefully
to blend with your other.
furnishings. .
Certainly a wall of pic-
• tures, prints, paintings and
other accessories would be
most appropriate for your
bare -looking wall. Plan out
what you will place on the
wall before you begin ham-
mering up the nails. When
you create your plan, take
into consideration the colors,
and other design elements in
_your room—
If you have hints of Orient-
al elsewhere in the room,
perhaps some Oriental ac-
cessories would be pleasing.
This wall arrangement will
add visual weight and drama
to this end of your room.
Q. I am renting a beautiful
house that has gold carpet-
ing throughout. The rest of
the house I can manage but
the living room is so boring
with the gold carpeting.,
brown sofa, etc.
Also the 21 -by -15 -foot size
of the room is broken up by
many windows and doors, in-
cluding the front door. I am
at a loss on how to arrange
my furniture and how to
make it more interesting. —
B. T.
A. Since your room is
broken up by many windows
and doors, you might think of
your room with several con-
versation areas rather then
one. Don't always think
furniture must be placed
against walls. Sometimes
short sofas (or a sofa and
pair of chairs) facing each
other and perpendicular to a
