What is the best way to re- move the . white plastic caulking around a glass shower door? There are leaks in the door enclosure and 'the caulking has discolored. I have tried scraping, but the shower is fiberglass and I. am afraid it will be damaged. Thank you for your advice. A. Heat the caulking to soften it, using a hair dryer. Then carefully test to see if you are able to pry it out or ZIGLZAG THE ORIGINAL WORD MAZE PUZZLE IEEMDSORLDIRO 06 ALL WORDS TO BE CONSTRUCTED PERTAIN TO THE ABOVE TOPIC. But before you try this, test a small area in an inconspicuous corner to be sure it does not damage the fiberglass. Q. My large lanai covered with an aluminum roof that I had painted white on the underside. The paint is now flaking off rapidly. What kind of paint should have been used? What kind of paint remover or scraping should be used now, and how should this area be re- finished? A. You may have used the wrong type of paint. Or if you failed to use a primer as a first coat, you would also ex- perience a peeling problem. P'; You niw need to remove the deteriorated previous coating by scraping and is wire -brushing. Be sure all loose particles are removed. Then clean with mineral spirits or a thinner -cleaner to remove oil or grease. Dirty surfaces should be washed with detergent • solution, rinsed and allowed to dry thoroughly. Then apply one coat of metal primer. Allow this to dry thoroughly before applying a good quality metal paint in a finish color of your choosing. Rust-Oleum manufactures cleaners, primers and paint for metals. These products are available at most paint supply stores. Q. My condo has a con- crete ceiling and un- fortunately there is a large crack. I cannot use tiles be- cause I don't have enough clearance from the heat vents and the window. In your opinion, could the mastic compound and glass fabric method be used on concrete? A. You should be able to use the glass fabric and mastic if the crack is not too wide. Repairs made using this crack -bridging system are said to be permanent, since the mastic itself never completely dries underneath (it surface -dries only), so that it is permanently pliable and flexible. Wall movement — the major cause of cracks — cannot dislodge or squeeze out such repairs because it is bridging the crack rather than filling it. I would recommend the use of . exterior Tuff -Cote, EACH PUZZLE HAS A DIFFICULTY RATING (ABOVE). FOUR STARS SIGNIFY THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY. GIVEN BELOW ARE THE POINT VALUES FOR EACH WORD. This should be avail- able ' at your local paint or building supply store. However, before you con- tinue with repairs, you might want to have the ceiling checked by a qualified build- ing contractor to see if there are any major structural problems that shold becor- rected rather than just concealing the crack. Check the Yellow Pages for the names of local ' con - 'tractors and home repair services. Be sure to get an estimate from more than orle firm, and ask for references. Q. I have to do some paint- ing around our farm. Is it safe to use aluminum paint OH such things as feed bins and water troughs, or is there a possibility that it might poison the animals if they happen to chew on it? A. Aluminum paint is usually lead-free and its pigment is non-toxic. But since there is always the possibility of a formula that is not safe for your purpose, read the label carefully to be sure that paint does not con- tain either lead or mercury. Q. Can a Formica -top table be painted? If so, what type of paint should I use? A. No paint will adhere satisfactorily to the Formica surface for any length of time because of its slick, non -porous surface. If you want to change the color of the tabletop, a sheet of Formica in any desired finish could be applied over the present surface, care- fully following installation instructions available at Formica dealers.
