SANDWICH GLASS. The
History of the Boston &
Sandwich Glass Company.

Glassware of the past is
something that is being
avidly sought by collectors of
fine glass objects, chiefly for
dining. Especially impres-
sive to collectors are those
glass objects manufactured
by the Boston & Sandwich
Glass Company, which was
•incorporated in 1826 and
lasted until 1888, the founder
being Deming Jarves (1791-
1869).
It is his story and the stor
of the company that is told i
Ruth Webb Lee's boo
"Sandwich Glass". Sand
wich is located in Barnstabl
County, Mass., on Cape Cod
The type of glass made by
this company is known as
Sandwich glass.
The book is more than a
history. It ,has many black
and white plates of various
objects of this company's
manufacture. It is a book for
lovers of old glass, but
physically it is tremendously
heavy, as though you could
press your clothes with it.

COLONIST'S CALF
The skeleton of a calf ex-
cavated from a filled-in well
at Fortress Louisbourg Na-
tional Historic Park on Cape
Breton Island is helping
scientists in their research
into the life of early settlers
at the old French colony. The
rare specimen, dating from
the 1740s, is being studied at
the Zooarchaeological
Identification Centre of the
National Museum of Natural
Sciences and is expected to
provide information about
the varieties of domestic cat-
tle brought to Canada at that
time.

t
My husband and.l. are the
only two people living in our
house at present, but you
wouldn't know it.
There are clothes and
boxes•in every closet, toys
and -sports equipment stand-
ing in corners, and belong-
ings that give way to a ghost-
ly feeling that there are eight
or nine people in residence
who only come out at night.
Sometimes I feel like Irm
sitting in the middle of Miss
Havisham's mess in "Great
Expectations" watching the
mice nip at the wedding
cake. My kids say I, am sit-
ting on a gold mine.
How do they figure that?
Take those eight boxes of old
baseball cards behind the
linens in the hall closet. They
have assured me that some-
day those little babies are
going to be worth a fortune.
It .blows my mind to think
what Pete Hose with a burr
haircuLwill be-worth-in;fiv
or 10 years.
And clothes for the '70s.
You know how , they go in
cycles. The '50s are hot now,
but in another 20 years, it
will be their turn and guess
who can just go to the closet
and be in style? You got it.
Even the car with the two
1Tat tires and no battery that
is parked in the yard has
gold written all over it. In
another 30 years, that car
will be a classic because only 1
380 of them were 'made and
most of them have self-
destructed or been torched a
by the owner.
I would have thought that p
there was no use whatsoever c
for a fox full of• bluebooks
and old spelling tests, but I
one of my kids was appalled.
"When I make it big, you're
going to kick yourself for
throwing away so much as a
phone doodle. Haven't you
read about Sotheby's auc-
tions? Have you any idea
what a Beatles' lyric on a
cocktail napkin would
bring?"
I'm not challenging any of
this. What I don't understand
is the ruleabout why a future
classic cannot be moved
while it is in the aging pro-
cess.
Wouldn't the Hallowe'en
masks of Richard Nixon and
G. Gordon Liddy be col-
lector's items if they were
stored in the kids' apart-
ments? Would the comic
books from their childhood
he worth any less if their
mice nibbled at them instead
of our mice?
No one will ever tell me
that the Smithsonian in
e-
WashingtonD-C.,
start out as the home of a
couple with three br four kids
who couldn't bear to part
with their childhood, so they
said; "Hey, Mom and Dad,
how about hanging onto this
airplane made out of balsa
wood? One day people will
file through herr-e-just to -look -
at this piece of history. And
would you store this bicycle
without a wheel? And this
broken tennis racket and
ucky gym shoes?"
Yesterday, I nearly killed
myself when a box of record
lbums fell from a shelf.
They are destined to become
riceless. The lyrics are
lean.
Sometimes I ask myself if
deserve to be this rich
crossroads
