The perfect bulb
for apartments
BY PATRICK DENTON
A wonderfully endearing
attribute for both paperwhite
narcissus and amaryllis
bulbs is that both can be
brought reliably into bloom
for Christmas from an early
November start.
The one to begin with is
amaryllis, for it usually
takes six or seven weeks to
bloom compared to the
paperwhite's five week.
1 just can't think of any
other bulb that flowers with
such speed and ease indoors,
with such spectacular, flam-
boyantly colored bl000ms, as
the amaryllis. It's a perfect
bulb for apartment dwellers
to grow, as it requires ab-
solutely no cold storage
period. And contrary to
popular belief, amaryllis
bulbs can be kept quite
easily from year to year,
even improving and increas-
ing in size to produce ad-
ditional flower stems in
future years.
When you go shoppingfor
amaryllis bulbs, you'll find
several colors available.
Probably the most popular
for Christmas are the vivid
scarlet •Red Lion and the
frosty White Christmas.
Orange Star and Orange
Sovereign oTfer intense, lus-
trous hues for fans of this
color, while Apple Blossom
is a delicate confection of
white veined in pink.
If there is a choice, buy the
biggest bulb you can find for
as a general. rule with
amaryllis, the larger the
bulb, the greater the number
of flower stalks. And a
second (sometimes even a
third) flower stalk greatly
extends the flowering time.
You can expect your
purchased amaryllis bulb to
grow something like this:
After being potted, it will
take close toa month to root
itself and begin pushing up
its first flower stalk- which
will grow fairly tall before
opening its buds. Each flow-
er stalk usually produces
a ring of three or four
immense, trumpet -shaped
blooms,— though I've had as
many as five.
By the time all the flowers
on the first stalk have opened
fully, the second flower
stalk, if there is one, will be
growing up alongside it and
slowly separating its upright
flower case into separate
buds. The whole flowering
time period can be prolonged
dramatically by keeping the
plant a little on the cool side
and out of direct sun. The
plant's arching, straplike
leaves most often appear
after the flower stalk.
Our amaryllis plants are

relatives of the narcissus,
but the amaryllis we buy for
winter bloom are strictly
warm weather hybrids,
originating from South
American bulbous plants
from which they have been
bred.
The proper name for this
exuberant houseplant is hip-
peastrum, from hippeus, a
knight, and astron, a star. It
appears that somewhere
back in the history of this
plant someone with the
authority to name it fancied
some resemblance to knights
and stars, though the applic-
ation does seem rather
remote.
Should you become hooked
on the beauty and ease of the
amaryllis, you'll be pleased
to know that it's possible to
have a whole succession off
them in bloom from
December through spring by
potting bulbs from early
November to early spring. If
you add a new bulb or two
each year to your collection,
you'll soon find you have
enought to fill several
windowsills at a time.
Amaryllis bulbs actually
are quite easy to keep from
year to year, given a sum-
mer outdoors, two months
rest in the fall and some
form of soil replenishment
when they're started up
again.
Another bonus is that the
bulbs often will produce little
side bulblets. I'm often
asked whether these should
be detached " and planted.
The answer is yes, provided
this isn't done too hasily. The
baby bulb must be allowed to
form some good roots of its
own first, and it should not be •
taken away from its mother
until it pulls very easily
away from her.
