HELP BREAK THE PATTERN
OF POVERTY
BY LOUISA RUSH
In one of my columns re-
cently, I described several
quilts which were made and
on display, before being auc-
tioned for the Mennonite
Relief Sale. Many of you
have written asking for the
Log Cabin design pattern,
and I am still trying to locate
it to have as a pattern.
Meanwhile I thought I could
describe it in a little more
detail.
"Log Cabin" was a pop-
ular form or patchwork both
in England and America
during the second half of the
19th century. Strips of ma-
terial are built out from a
central square, their edges
overlapping. The square is
divided diagonally by the
light and dark shadings of
the strips.
Traditionally the central
square represents the fire,
the light half of the square is
the firelit side of the room
and the dark side, in the sha-
dows.
You will need a square of
fabric to use as a foundation,
a 12 -inch square is a good
size if you are making a bed-
cover, a 6 -inch square if you
are making a pillow o1' cush-
ion.
It is helpful in placing the
patches on this foundation, if
a' light pencil line is drawn
diagonally from each corner.
Take a two-inch square of
fabric for the centre and tack
it to the foundation. This will

The other fabrics in light
and dark shades should be
cut into strips one -inch wide.
For each square of the
design as you build it out
from the centre, you will
need two light and two dark
strips.
The first short strip of the
light material is placed right
side down on the centre
square and stitched a quart-
er of an inch from the edge,
covering one side of the inner
or centre square. It is then
folded hack and pressed
down.
A second strip of light ma-
terial is sewn along the sec-
ond side of the centre square,
overlapping the first strip at
one end. The third and fourth
sides of the square are cov-
ered with strips ok dark ma-
terial, each one overlapping
the previous one at the end.
By using two strips of light
fabric and then two strips of
dark fabric, you will end up
vbith the dark "logs" on one
side of the square and the
the crossed pencil
light "logs" on the other
side. Work the next layer of
logs around the square and
continue until the foundation
piece has been completely
covered. When joining the
completed squares together,
alternate the light and dark
corners for maximum con-
trast.

Q. This chair is all walnut
and appears to be hand-
made. According to my hus-
band's family, it was made
over 100 years ago and is
quite valuable.
What can you tell me about
it?
A. You had better believe
your in-laws! This chair is
Victorian Gothic Revival
and was made about l'50.
As to value — it should sell
in the $325 to $375 range.
Q. This mark is on the bot-
tom. of a beautiful bowl, 10
'inches in, diameter and 3
inches deep. It has an ornate,
irregtijiar rim and the por-
trait of a lady in the center.
Please tell me what you
. can about it.
A. This was made by Carl
Tielsch in Waldenburg, Ger-
many, during the late 19th
century.
It probably would sell in
the $125 to $135 range.
