Ironmen are the losers in
battle of `cellar dwellers'
By Lee Cowley
Last Friday saw the
Wingham Ironmen roll into
Goderich for a battle of the
"cellar dwellers" in the
Junior C hockey group. Botfi
the Ironmen and the Sailors
had two points in the early
season, but last Goderich night's 9-5 win put Goderich
ahead in the standings.
The Goderich club started
out hitting everything in a
blue sweater and took the
play to the Ironmen in the
early going. At 6:53, big
defenceman Pete Willems
drew first blood for the
Sailors by letting a hard shot
fly from the point that found
the Ironmen net. Then at
11:09, Kevin Lee's shot from
the slot, with his team en-
joying a two-man advantage,
'staked the Sailors to a 2-0
lead.
John Turnbull in the
Wingham net kept things
close with a number of
dazzling saves, particularly
one on Shawn Rahbeck, who
failed to beat Turnbull on his
glove side on a breakaway.
In the second period, after
Turnbull robbed the Sailor's
Brad Armstrong when he
went in all alone, the Sailors
upped the score to 3-0 with
Kevin Telford potting one in
heavy traffic at 2:45 on a
Sailor power play.
The Ironmen finally got on
the board with a powerplay
effort at 6:09 by Bill Haines
with a big shot from the point
that eluded Sailor goalie
Randy Gaynor's out-
stretched glove. Jamie
Robinson took a long leadoff
pass from Haines and
outraced two Sailor defen-
ders before beating goalie
Rockers post a win
and a loss last week
By Fraser Strong
The Wingham Rockers
Oldtimers' Hockey Club
posted a win and a loss last
week, defeating Clinton 7-3,
'but losing to Durham 3-1.
The Rockers took on the
new Durham Legion Old-
timers last Tuesday and
came out on the short end of
a 3-1 score. Rockers' rookies
Gary Lisle and Bob Arm-
strong figured in Wingham's
only goal. Armstrong dug the
puck out • of the corner to
Lisle, who fed a perfect pass
to Wayne Brown. He then
slid the puck past Hargrave
in the Durham net.
Hard work produced many
scoring opportunities for the
Rockers, but they failed to.
capitalize.
In last Saturday night's
match, the Rockers hosted
another new oldtimers'
team, the "Flaming Foul -
Ups" from Clinton. The
Rockers skated to a 7-3
victory.
Fraser Strong led
Wingham's scoring assault
with a strong, three -goal
performance. Ray Walker,
Ken Balzer, Jim English and
Ron Beecroft all picked up.
singles.
Len Houghton of the
Rockers. had a.. goal
disallowed because ., the
referee said he was in the
crease. Actually, Houghton
never really shot the puck
into the net. It . merely
deflected off his arm, so he
said he wasn't too upset at
the call, but was concerned
about the bruise on his arm.
INJURY REPORT—
Speedy centre Ross Davies is
sidelined for an indefinite
period with a pulled muscle
in his back. Lisle and George
Skinn played double shifts in
last Tuesday evening's game
after Davies was injured:
Lisle said the extra work
made him feel young again,
however Skinn said it made
him feel tired.
Don't forget the Rockers'
tournament will be played in
the Blyth arena from Nov. 21
to 24, featuring 16 teams.
There's also a free dance on
the Saturday night in ad-
dition to the hockey action.
Gaynor at 11:56 to bring the
Ironmen to within one goal.
Unfortunately for the
Wingham side, the Sailors
came right back 21 seconds
later John Thompson
beating Turnbull with a
quick wrist shot high on the
glove side.
Wingham again climbed to
within one goal of the home
side when Paul Tolton's
point shot caromed off Tim
Brown in front of the
Goderich goal at 14:07 with
Wingham enjoying ,a two-
man advantage. However
after this point the roof
caved in for the Ironmen as
the Sailors came up with
three goals in a span of 85
seconds to take, a com-
manding 7-3 lead. Sailor
goals were scored by Lee, his
second Darryl Madge with a
low, hard shot to the stick.
side and Grant Garnow,
whose shot threaded the
needle when goalie Turnbull
came far out of his net to -cut
the angle.
Brown scored his second
goal at 18:15 on a shot from
the slot to send'the teams to
their 'respective- dressing
rooms with the Sailors up 7-4.
In the third period. John
Thompson and Chris, Sideris
scored at 3:48 and 12:10 respectively to stake the
Sailors to a 9-4 lead.
Robinson, Wingham's
quick, small forward, closed
out the scoring at 12:38 with
his second marker of the
night on a centring pass from
/Jason Goodall.
Although the Goderich
club outscored the Ironmen
in every period and
generally outhustled and

be understood that the
Wingham team was playing
severely shorthanded with
only 12 skaters, compared to
17 for the Sailors. In ;par-
ticular, credit should be
given to young Brett Martin
who, although still Midget
age, has been used by Coach
Skinn on the left wing and
defence and who was double
shifted all evening. He stood
up well despite being the
target of some vicious body
slamming,
