Stars Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep. This film depicts the terri- ble effects of the Vietnam War on three young American soldiers and the repercussions at home on their family and friends. Lucille Ball, one of televi- sion's foremost comediennes for more than 30 years, dur- ing which she won numerous awards including four Em- mys, returns to television in a rare dramatic role as an elderly New York City shop- ping bag lady existing on scraps, spunk and dead dreams, in"Stone Pillow", a -new motion picture for tele- vision produced and directed by eight -time Emmy Award - Winner George Schaefer. It will be presented on CTV's --.)•••••••••••••••••••••••••• • • • • • • • • • • • tli, • • • • • T'FAT' S Show 117 By Vonnie I,ee • •.. .am" \ .... • • ,r' .:_ ••••elea..rt' •••••••••••••••••••••••••• A tearful Ricky Skaggs ran onto a Nashvi-lie- stage- last week to claim the Country Music Association award as entertainer 'of the year: To claim the award he had to garner more votes than his competitors: Alabama who has won the award many times; Reba McEntire; Lee Greenwood and George Strait. Skaggs and his band also took the award for in- strumental group of the year.-... - _ Though Alabama came away empty handed at this event, the others in the above 'category did alright even if they didn't win that -award. Reba' McEntire was named female vocalist of the year; Lee Greenwood won song of the year award for writing "God Bless The USA" and George Strait ' was named male vocalist of the year and won an award for his album, "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?". The ladies edged out by McEntire were Roseanne Cash, Janie Fricke, Emmy Lou Harris and Anne Murray. Strait defeated Greenwood, Gary Morris, Skaggs and Hank Williams Jr. to take his biggie. Williams won an award for his country video, though. The Judds, a mother -and - daughter team from Ken- tucky, had the single of the year, "Why Not 16Ie7, and was named the vocal group of the year. Anne Murray and Dave Loggins were the vocal duo of -the year and guitarist Chet Atkins again took the instrumentalist award. Named to the Country Music Hall of Fame were bluegrass pioneers Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Flatt died in the late '70s but Scruggs was there to accept the honor, though he wasn't given a change to say anything., The 'show dragged many times, .with participants waiting for their lines to appear in front of them. The lifeless hosts were Anne Murray . and Kris Kristof- ferson who must have shaved off his talent with his beard! Country music lovers must have enjoyed seeing the big stars of Nashville, though, in musical tributes to Willie. Nelson -and -singing some of their biggest hits. 0 0 0 It becomes evident to me many times that today's film and stage stars can not come close to the accomplish- ments -of some of the enter- tainment world's greats. Maybe ._thaG.s_not _their fault; maybe they just don't have the right vehicle. I again thought this when I heard of the deaths of Orson Wells and Yul Brynner. Wells v.'asan amazing talent who could (in many things. But he ' it be best remembered for t„e night in 1938 when he scared the pants off a nat.or wi "War of the Worlds '. , radio broadcast that dram; tied the landing of Mart;. ns In the U.S. Brynner also performed many roles but he will always be the King of Siam in "The King and I", a role he played more times than any other actor in stage history. He lost a lengthy battle with cancer and his greatest legacy may well he a taped- interview in which he warns everyone to stop smoking - "It's never too early . . . not too late!' . "The Price is Right" viewers will miss announcer Johnny Olson who died last weekend after suffering a brain hemorrhage Academy Performance, Sat= urday, November 2, 9:00- 11:00 p.m. Daphne Zuniga, stars as Carrie, a young social work- er who learns about life on the street from the homeless older -woman; ' Flora. Flora remembers the days when she had a husband, a son, a house and a garden, before her life degenerated through welfare checks and rented tenement rooms to a staked - out doorway, in lower Man - ha tten. William Converse -Roberts portrays a public accountant who spends his spare„ time helping the homeless with paperwork and other prob- lems in the complex of dingy tunnels and steamy rooms beneath the rotunda of Grand Central Station. Anna Maria Horsford plays Car- rie's co-worker at a Manhat- ten shelter. BOOR REVIEW D. W. GRIFFITH. An Ameri- can Life. By Richard Schick- -ef Simorrand-Seh ster,-Inc:, New York. PERCY MADDUX The most prominent film director of the early days of motion pictures was David War -if -Gaff -a-Keen tuekian- who started out as a stage actor. Born in 1875, he had a brilliant career as the maker of expensive films until the 1930s, when his influence waned, but.. even his great days were fraught with un- certainties and financial troubles, and then there were his two marriages. He spent his last days bitter and frustrated and died in 1948. Thp story of this hectic life is told in great detail in Richard Schickel's "D. W. iriffith: An American Life". Ti;P author has thoroughly researched his subject and provides us with._ actual - amounts as to production costs, boy( office receipts, the borrowings of Griffith and contractual obligations. This book opens up a whole world to the reader. There are also photograph sections. Andy Griffith, Ralph Waite and Diane Ladd star in Crime of Innocence, on Sat- urday, October 26, 9:00-11:00 p.m. on CTV Television.
