He had left hospital to return home, he was working on a book, he was keeping in touch with the world. And when word was received last week that Rock Hudson had lost his battle with AIDS, the har- shness of the truth finally set in. Though its victims have been many, AIDS somehow took on greater importance and dread when it felled a great man like Hudson, a strong handsome- superstar in his 50s. The week before Hudson's death, a lot of money was raised at an AIDS benefit in Hollywood. Here is a town that covers its failures and inadequacies with the tinsel • of fairytale dreams, But since Hudson's revelation that he did indeed suffer from the dreaded disease, more and more entertainers have come forward with stories of friends and fellow performers they have lost or are losing to AIDS. An organization formed to help fight it is hopeful that Hudson's story and tragic death will help bring.it more into the public eye and en- courage 'governments, groups and individuals to be generous in funding research into its causes and a possible cure, At 83, actor Lloyd Nolan died after a long battle with lung cancer. He had been a popular actor for years, . -starred in the movie version of "Peyton Place" and will be remembered by television fans as Dr. Chegley, Diahann Carroll's boss in the "Julia" series, Lately, he has been seen in a number of commercials. A fight with cancer also ended . for actress Simone Signoret who died last week in Paris. She won an Academy Award for her role in "Room at the Top" and was married to another top French star, Yves Montand. Music arranger .Nelson Riddle died of heart and kidney failure. Though always in the background, his name is synonymous with easy listening. He was one of Sinatra 's favorite arrangers, the best at easy love ballads and lonely blues numbers. In' the last two years, he won more praise and admiration for his super work on Linda -Ronstadt's two albums of old standards. Their joint effort on "What's New?" made that golden oldie a hit again.
