In most instances we do not even have the necessary back- ground to judge which doctor, or which mechanic, to trust, unless we go on what we know about human nature. I am no expert on trees. My only credential is that I love trees and have spent a long time looking at them. And it is my growing convic- tion that the trees around us, here in Southern Ontario. are in trouble. There is more die back than there used to be, not just in the cities, but in the countryside. Increasing- ly, trees -do not look heaTthZy — the foliage -is not as lush, the greens are not as green, and there are more bare twigs than there ought to be. I _. am.-con-vi.nced __lir—Other words, that pollution of some kind is taking a perfectly vis- ible toll, and yet science does not back me up. Science may well be right. I may be imag- ining things. But it was science which told me recently, and told the Fisheries that old danger to my health. All I have needed up until now, to minister as well, tuna was not a tell me when mpat was bad, or fish or milk 'was past its prime, or there was gas in the bilge, was my nose, a pretty reliable instrument in these matters. Science is cautious, but a nose is not, and neither are the eyes. Scientists admit that in some parts of Ontario, our , trees are very close to being in serious trouble. It's not just acid rain, but other types of airborne pollution as well. But not enough is known. The toxicity of the ozone layer has not been quantified. Airborne pollut- -ants—m-a y-be--leeehi-ng—t-he---- fertility out of the soil, but we don't know by how much. 11, We have a handle on what's been happening in the •--Appalachia-rt Mountains; in - Germany and Scandinavia, but not yet . in Ontario. My concern is that by the time science can measure what's happening, and coordinate its findings, we will have lost a significant part of our en- vironment.
