.tains I.Yn concrete
a common E1 rob9r;m
By Gene Gary
Q. Can you please tell me
how to get rust stains off
cement? I enjoy your
column. —Mary B., Palm
Springs, Calif.?
A. This is a common prob-
lem and I'll be happy to re-
peat instructions that we
have carried several times
in this column.
For grease and oil stains
on concrete surfaces, first
scrub the stains with benzine
or grease solvent. 'filen mix
one part sodium citrate with
six parts of water and six'
parts of\commercial glycer-
ine. Add sufficient whiting
powder to form a thick paste.
A coat of this paste should
be kept on the stain for one
week and new paste added
when it dries out. Then flush
the dried -on second layer
away and the stain should be
gone.
But you ask about rust
stains. The formula and the
procedure are the same as
above, but if a rust stain still
remains, make another
paste of one part sodium
citrate crystals to six parts
of water and add sufficient
powdered whiting to form
thick paste, Heavy layers of
this spread and dried on the
rust stain should remove it.
However, because, con-
crete is porous, it may be im-
possible to completely re-
move these stains. But this
treatment should lighten the
stains or discoloration. Re-
peat three of four • times if
necessary.

A. Choose a print fabric
that you like; let's say, for
example, a floral fabric of
light brown background,
with leaves and flowers in
white, peach, dark brown,
beige and shrimp.' Make or
have made a quilted bed-
spread.
Buy extra fabric for your
bedspread so you can re-
cover your headboard to
match the bedspread. Use
the print in Roman blinds at
the windows or install mini
blinds.
To create a warm, yet
relaxing atmosphere, select
a pale, pale peach for your
wall color.

Hardwood floors adapt..
to many decorating styles

Q. We are remodeling a
small old bungalow and we
are considering a new wood
floor in the living and dining
rooms.
1 want the rooms to be in-
formal and contemporary
looking. What style of wood
floor would be most approp=
riate for this kind of setting?
—R.R.T. .
A. Most standard types of
wood floors can be used in
both formal and informal
kinds of rooms with the re-
sult ranging from contem-
porary to traditional.
Wood flooring is available
in strips from 11/2 to 3 inches
in width, planks 2 to 8 inches

in width, and parquet blocks
usually about 9 inches
square. These are available
for do-it-yourselfers as well
as for the professional floor
installer.
Some wood is prefinished
while other types are not. In
high traffic areas, you may
wish to finish your wood with
liquid plastic, which only
needs mopping to keep look-
ing nice. Some home owners
prefer a mat finish. Consider
your preferences, based on
looks and upkeep.
The formality or informal-
ity of : your room will be
established more by your.
furnishings, fabrics and ac-
cessories than by the style of
the wood flooring.
Q. 'My apartment living
room is 11 feet wide and 16
feet long. A large floor -to -
ceiling window donlinates
one of the 11 foot walls. A
fireplace is onone of the 16 -
foot walls.
The room is quite chopped
up with the front door and
doors leading to other rooms.
Please suggest 'some furni-
ture arrangement for me. I
like rather delicate, antique
furnishings. —T.M.
A. Start with a short sofa
or love seat flanking the fire-
place with two small lounge
chairs opposite the sofa.
Center the arrangement with
a small coffee table and
place an end table between
the two chairs.
Take advantage, of your
window by placing some
eating in front of it — either
pair. of small wood -framed
chairs or a traditional bench.
