Traditional
feasts are part
of th fun
The years 1of the threshing machine are
not only remembered for their innovation to
the harvesting work, but also for the sump-
tious meals that accompanied the great fall
event.
The fresh fall air and the strenous labor
involved in bringing in the harvest meant
big appetites. While the men worked in the
fields, women labored in hot kitchens,
preparing huge feasts for the threshing
gangs.
The traditional threshing feasts are
remembered with the variety of good
homecooking offered at the Blyth Thresher
Reunion.
Food booths, breakfasts and dinners at
the three day event offer culinary treats for
people of all tastes.
One of the most ,popular eating spots is
located in the arena auditorium where the
Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary, under the
direction of Lillian Riehl, serve lunches,
snacks and hot dinners.'
Hot meals will include turkey, beef or
sausage dinners, cabbage salad, garden
fresh vegetables and homemade pies. Some
70 pies have been baked to feed the hundreds
of dinner guests and a new addition to this •
year's dessert menu is cherry cheesecake.
Egg, salmon, turkey and beef sandwiches
and dessert will be served for lunches.
Proceeds from the meals are directed
back to the Legion Auxliary, then delegated
for community work.
Money is also given to minor sports, in ap-
preciation for the help that their supporters
offer the Auxiliary ladies at the food booths.
Those who are familiar with the threshing
reunion, are also familiar with the hospitali-
ty and cooking talents of the Blyth Lions
Club.
The Lions Club will operate a beer garden
in Lions' Park on Saturday and will serve a
hot roast beef dinner , at' the arena
auditorium on Saturday night.
This year the Lions will also be hosting the
OPP Pipes and Drums band to a Friday
night meal.
• The money raised by the Lions Club at the
reunion. will help offset the costs of new pic-
nic pavilion, built at Lions' Park.
Members of the Blyth Fire Department
will again be joining the food service ranks
at the reunion. For the third year in a row,
the firemen will be serving up pancake .
breakfasts at the Fire Hall on Saturday and
Sunday mbining.
Pies, hot dogs, cider and bean pots, pop-
corn and ice cream treats are some of the
,.many taste treats that can. be found on the
grounds of the thresher reunion.
No one goes hungry at the Blyth Thresher
Reunion.
