Power of steam runs saw mill
The saw mill at the Threshermen's Reu-
Mon has been a tradition for the Searson
family ever since the late George Searson
first ran the exhibit at the first reunion.
"When we were kids wo'd tag along to the
reunion. We took over after he died," said
Carl Searson of Watford who has been in
charge of the saw mill exhibit for the past
three years. His three brothers Clare,
Harley and Darryl are all long time
members of the Threshermen's Association,
Mr. Searson said his father brought the
saw mill along with his two Sawyer -Massey
1913 and 1929 steam engines for the first 12
years of the reunion. Since that time, .the
Threshers Association has had their own
saw mill which is only used on the days of
the reunion. • • ,
In fact, the Searson's continue to keep the
steam power alive at their Watford saw
mill. Their mill, says Mr. Searson, is the on-
ly one in Ontario to run witlithe aid of a trac-
tion steam engine.
The saw mill is run at the reunion through
a series of belts, pulleys and shafts which
are attached to the steam engine. The saw
mill consists of an edger which cuts the bark
from the wood leaving a straight edge. The
sawdust under the blade is whisked away by
another belt which is also hooked to the
steam engine.
While working the saw mill exhibition, he
insists that all the approximately 12 to 15
steam engines at the reunion get an d por-
tunity to power the mill.
"We use all the steam engines with ach
hooked to the mill for a half to three-
quarters of an hour. We want to let the
crowds see the different types of engineat

work," he said.
TheBlyth reunion is not the only threshers
show m which the Searsons. participate.
They alsuplaced their two steam engines on
display at a similar event in Brigden in late
August. Although the reunion is the source
of a lot of hard work for Mr. Searson, he
says it's a lot of fun.
"You get to meet a few people you don't
see from year to year. We take the trailer
and the whole family moves up to Blyth for
the weekend. It's an awful lot of fun."

The lumber cutting operation is an impressive site and a popular display at the thresher
reunion. You'll always find a crowd gathered around this operation, to watch the giant
saw slice through logs.
