School,presented several awards to Grade 8 students at the recent banquet, Laura Hallahan receiv- ed the Catholic Women's League Award for general UCW ladies meet at Mildmay manse BELMORE—The June meeting of the Belmore- McIntosh United Church Women was held last Wednesday at the manse in Mildmay, with President Eileen Johann in charge. Mary Renwick 'Jr. was in charge of the devotions and read an article from Climb- ing the Heights by Al Bryant. Betty Darling read the scrip- ture and two hymns were sung, followed by prayer. For the study session, Ellen Inglis read two articles from The Observer, "Children Belong in the Church" by Robert Root and "Ecumenical from the Crib" by Francie Thompson. The latter was about Rey. Nadine Grieve-Deslippe, a United Church minister married to a Roman Catholic layman and how they are working together to solve their religious differences and bring up their young daughter in both religions. For, the roll call, the 14 ladies brought rolls of pennies. A get -well card was signed for Mary Fitch and a review of next month's program was read. The minutes were read and Hilda Dustow gave a report on the church plates she is in charge of ordering. It was decided the special collection next month be given to the tornado relief fund. Plans were finalized for the July 14 church serv- ice by the UCW. It will be outdoors at the Mawhinney's camp grounds. Audrey Fitch gave a reading from The Reader's Digest, "How the Nightin- gale Got Its Song", and Mrs. Johann closed the meeting with a prayer. Lunch was served by Mrs. Dustow and Marg Lewis. proficiency, while Kris Chandler and Brian Richey received the Principal's Award for citizenship and scholastic achievement: Local boys receive Chief Scouts Award Two Wingham boys, Ian, Ward and Murray Lapp, have received the highest award a Boy Scout can receive: the Chief Scouts' Award. They were presented with their awards at a ceremony held recently in Exeter. Ontario Lieut. -Gov. John Black Aird made the presentation. Those eligible for the award must have earned five of the necessary badges in areas such as conservation, exploring, first aid, life saving, personal fitness, swimming, winter scouting, hikes, sleep -outs or cooking. They also must have spent at Hosp. office staff honors co-worker Members of the office staff of Wingham 'and District Hospital, their spouses and special guests gathered recently to honor Mrs. .John Hospitaiauxiiiry•a Donaldson who retires this week after 27 years on the --office staff at the hospital. Guests` at—the,_dinner were former members of -the, nursing staff, Miss Gwen Norris of Port Stanley and Miss Edna Carr of Wingham. Also in attendance were Mrs. Iris (Morrey) Fielding, who was administrator of the hospital during most of Mrs. Donaldson's term of em- ployment, and Mr. Fielding. Mr. and Mrs. Donaldson were. presented with a mohair blanket and a silk floral arrangement. She responded by reminiscing about the many changes that have •taken pl ce during her stay there and many happy memories that accompany her into retirement. Her cheery countenance and friendly helpfulness will be missed by the many people who have been privileged to work with her during her 27 years of service to the in- stitution. Mrs. Marion Finnie of St. Marys, chairman of Region 2 of . the Hospital Auxilaries' Association of Ontario, brought greetings from her executive to members of the local hospital auxiliary at its meeting Monday. She urged the group to plan ahead and budget for participation in the associa- tion's educational events at which top-level professional leaders give instruction in volunteer skills. Mrs. Jo Facey, also of the St. Marys area and secretary -treasur- er of Region 2, accompanied Mrs. Finnie on her visit to Wingham. • During the business. section of the meeting, the auxiliary voted to donate the net proceeds from the spring rummage sale, $2,100 (re- ceipts minus expenses)`""td-- the hospital building fund. In addition, as a result of other successful fund-raising activities, it was able to vote to provide the following much-needed items to the hospital: two Balkan frames for bed patients; two Geri chairs for geriatrics; two Broda chairs and two Broda footstools for a patients' lounge and one croupette for pediatrics. The total cost of these items is $3,680. A progress report was made on the planning ac- tivities in preparation for the fall conference of Region 2, which will be held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Wingham, on Mon- day, Sept. 30. Ian and Murray both will attend. the F. E. Madill Secondary School in the fall.' They have been active Scouts since the age of 11 and even though they should be officially done with scouting in September, they will stay on for one year to help with the group's activities. They are the seventeenth and eigthteenth Wingham Scouts to receive the Chief Scouts' Award. Institute. meets at Lincoln home The Wingham Women's Institute held its monthly meeting last Thursday at the home of Mrs. David Lincoln. A total of 11 members and one guest were present. The meeting opened with -the--Institute Ode, the Mary Stewart Collett—and "0 Canada". The executive was M charge of the meeting and the rollcall was answered with "What would you be doing if you weren't at an Institute meeting today?". The president, Mrs. Ed McBurney, was in charge of the meeting. The secretary - treasurer, Mrs. James Hardie, read the minutes of the last meeting, the roll call and correspondence and gave the financial report. Mrs. David Ritchie and Mrs. Hardie gave a report on the Huron West WI's district annual meeting held in the Wingham United Church last month. The theme of the meeting was "Youth — Our Hope for Tomorrow". Two contests were con- ducted 5 MRS. WILLIAM S lTHERN - -Notes from Fordwich Mr. and Mr,¢. Art Mitchell of Port Elgin Visited one day last week with Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Armstrong. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Mark Harding who were married last Saturday' in the United Church. Mrs. Glenn Johnston and Paul bouglas attended the Blue Water Pleasure Drive at Port Elgin Sunday. Approximately 30 horse- drawn vehicles were part of the drive. Mrs. Johnston catered to the dinner at which about 150 people en- joyed the get-together. Mr..,aid Mrs. Ted Klaas- sen attended the Old Country Picnic in Goderich Sunday. Approxima-ely..75 people were in attendance. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wendt of Toronto spent a few days last week with Mrs. E. A. Schaefer. Mrs. Florence Wilson recently received„word that her daughter, Mrs. Joan Dunbar, is in Toronto East General Hospital, where she will undergo major surgery. Mrs. Marian Kirley is spending some time with relatives in Thornhill. Sunday visitors with Mrs. Nellie Simmons were Mr. and Mrs. Doug Wildfang, Paul Wildfang and friend of Mississauga. Friends of Mrs. Les Halliday will be sorry to hear she is a patient in the Listowel hospiital. We wish her a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McCallum and family moved last week to the home they recently,` purchased in Clifford. G. A number from this area attended the 25th wedding anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Glenn McClement last Friday evening in Listowel. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Stewart of Kitchener spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stewart. A number of Anglican Church Women from Trinity Church and several guests attended "The Pirates of Penzance" at the Stratford festival last Thursday evening. A. new diploma was intro- duced and each child enroll- ed in the Sunday School was presented with a diploma and first-year seal. Those with perfect attendance ob- tained a special seal and they were: Senior Class, Ruth Hig- gins; Junior Class, Chris Campbell, Andrew Camp- bell, Steven Marks; Junior - Voice for Life plans activities Wingham. Voice for Life is planning to hold its annual garage and bake sale at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sjaarda, three miles west of Wingham, this Friday. Proceedswill go toward the educational activities of the group. In September members of the group will take part in a mass rally at Queen's Park. Special transportation will be arranged so as many as possible can protest the continued operation of the Morgentaler abortion clinic and remind the government that opposition is growing to laws which permit abortions. The local group also will organize a fund-raising walkathon early in October. Many members took part'in a protest walk in London June 9, ending at Victoria Hospital where many abortions are performed. About 900 people par- ticipated. During the Sunday School a camp sing -song was led by Ruth Higgins and Alison Coultes. Lynda Riley and Dennis Henderson of Harriston were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs, Oliver Riley. Mrs. Allan Griffith was in Goderich, last Friday and Saturday.
