Superb ability and ex-
cellence in performance are
phrases you seldom hear
applied to the actors and
actresses of the '80s. That
may be because they seldom
have the material that bests
displays their marvellous
gifts. Sir Michael Redgrave
is a performer of that era of
stage and screen that
produced memorable works
worthy of the talents of a
consummate artist and his
death last week reminds us
that there are not many left
of his time and calibre.
At 77, Redgrave had.
suffered for several ' years
from Parkinson's Disease
and had- not worked for five
years. He was head of 'a
talented 'family that included
his wife, Rachel Kempson;
his two daughters, Vanessa
and Lynn; and his son Corin.
Several of his grandchildren
have already had stage and
screen roles.
Redgrave's stage career
began in the Mid -'30s and he
made his first film, an Alfred
Hitchcock thriller, in 1938.
His last film role was in
"Nicholas and . Alexandra?'
in the early '70s.

Proof that Anne Murray is
still a favorite with the
Canadian people is the fact
that her February special,
"The Sounds of ,London",
drew the largest audiences
of any CBC show this season,
almost . three million
viewers. In fact, her special
was the 'third most popular
show that week, only
"Dallas" and the first
episode of the ' miniseries,
"Hollywood Wives", ranking
higher.
Several other CBC shows
have received high ratings.
"A Planet For The Taking",
the new David Suzuki series,
drew more than two million
viewers. for its first episode
and the special, "Charlie
Grant's War", attracted
more than two million. The
sixth most popular show
during the first week. in
January was "Gentle Sin-
ners", the story of a young
boy who becomes smothered
by his parents' religious
practices and leaves home to
live with his eccentric uncles
It drew more than 2.2 million
viewers.
Other CBC dramas that
received high ratings were
"The Other Kingdom", the
story .of. a woman dealing
with the trauma' of breast
cancer; and "Hockey
:Night'.',the story of, a gir,l's.
fight to play on a boys'
hockey team. An episode of
"Man Alive", featuring host
Roy Bonisteel talking with
nurse Susan Nelles, drew the
largest audience in the
hiry of the long-running
series, more than a million
and a half viewers.
August birth month
What's the most popular
month for having babies? In
1980 it was August, • when
there were over 330,000 U.S.
births, 5,000 more than in
October, which was second.

IT'S YOUR MONEY
By Paul J. Rockel
Make a million without
knowing how to invest
Investing!
Investments!
Do those words scare you
as much as they do me'?
Are you among the up to
90 per cent of Canadians
who don't know the first
thing about stocks and
bonds, who don't know any-
thing about preferred.
shares, warrants and all
those other investment
terms?
And you really don't'eare
to know, because you would
only end up confused?
• Well .. this column is
designed for you.
I hope to share simple
ideas with you that will
help you achieve financial
goals, save taxes for you
and your family, and build
a sound financial future.
1 hope to be able to show
you how to achieve a mil-
lion dollars, whether you
are a $5.00 to $10.00 per
hour worker, or a $100 per
hour businessman.
You see, 1 don't know
anything about investing
either.
Other than purchasing
some Canada Savings
Bonds during World War 11
(they were called Victory
Bonds then) and letting a
friend of mine convince me
to invest $200 into 100
'shares of "a hot, sure to go
up" stock, I've never
owned stocks or bonds di-
rectly. Nor do 1 intend to.
The 100 shares of stock I
owned were difficult to get
rid of. When 1 tried to find
out something about them
years later, nobody knew
anything about them. Yet it
was one of the hottest
stocks in the late '60s,
supposedly selling more
shares than any other
stock. 1 finally (in 1978)
found a broker, who spent
several hours finding out
that the stock had changed'
its name several times, and
been merged with other
companies, When 1 asked
him to sell the shares I had
anti gave him the share
certificate, he got me $20.00
for my original $200. •
That's investing?
I've never bought an-
other stock, or for that
matter, even a Canada
Savings Bond. In fact, 1
can't afford to buy Canada
Savings Bonds, even. at 20
per cent interest. If I did,
and Um in the 50 per cent
tax bracket, 1 lose half of
that 20 per cent to taxes,
leaving 10 per cent net
return: With inflation at
12.5 per cent in the past
year, it means I'd be losing
2.5 per cent in purchasing
power each year.
Yet, on my investments,
1 do little or nothing in the
way of studying. I don't
know a warrant from a
preferred. 1 simply sit back
and enjoy the results.
I started working as an
apprentice in 1942, at the
age of 15, and earned 20¢
per hour.
Over-'' the past 10 years
most of my investments
have averaged over 18 per
cent or 20 per cent per
year. 1 lose very little to
taxation, so that 1 end up
with an after-tax gain of 12
per cent to 15 -per cent, 1 do
not lose purchasing power
but actually stay ahead of
inflation.
1 achieved everything 1
have through using "in-
vestment funds" and what
I call the "lazy man's way
to riches"..
1 hope to share these
ideas with you in future
columns.
