(In Canada: Oxford University Press, Toronto. 176 pp. $22.75). Reviewed by PERCY MADDUX Although not discovered by him, Halley's Comet was named for Edmond Halley (1656-1742), who was the second Astronomer Royal (1721-1742), the first having been appointed by King Charles II in 1675 in the per- son of John4amsteed. • Donald Tattersfield's book "Hailey's Comet" describes this comet and comets in general, alternating between a simple account and more scientifc detail. Such a book is particularly appropriate at this time because the comet is due to make an appearance in 1985. Halley's Comet traces an elliptical course around the sun and comes in sight of earth aPout once in every 75 years. The last appearance was in 1910. Abbott and Costello 57 Wmra CD NOYMO I like to mosey around Muskoka any time of year. Sometimes I stop at Sloan's in Gravenhurst for a coffee and renew acquaintances with old Press Club cronies like Strathy Smith, Jack Hutton, or Hugh Claremont. Hugh and his trumpet have become something of a tra- dition in Muskoka. The day the restored "Segwun," the venerable' steamer, began sailing the lakes again, Hugh with trumpet and straw hat was standing on the bow playing Dixieland. When the Bethune home- stead was officially opened, Hugh was there. So was Hol- lywood's Otto Preminger, gathering material for a movie about Canada's famous Dr. Bethune who was so beloved by the Chinese. Althdugh the big season in.,' Muskoka is summertime, the 1`Cavalcade of Color" in the autumn runs it a close second. Most of us . don't realize that the changing leaves up through Brace - bridge, Huntsville, Bala and beyond is a world-class event. There are few places anywhere that compare with the spectacle. But Muskoka is also a beautiful district in winter. I like to go up to High Falls near Braeebridge where David and Mary Brooks live. David is with Natural Re-, sources and puts me on to all sorts of wildlife stories. I'm always' wondering how the deer are doing during the winter months and David makes arrangements for me to get out to the deer -yards - clearings where the deer gather to feed. We wait for a heavy snow- fall, and when it clears I join one of the government crews on their regular runs. Early in the morning, they put snowmobiles, snowshoes and bags of feed on trucks and head for the yards. The 'deer need help in the winter. Aside from trying to escape the natural preda- tors, they have a hard time getting food in the deep snow. The crews cut the browse that is beyond their reach and leave it for them. They they put grain in feed- ers to supplement the deer's diet. It's an annual outing I look forward to. As I trudge on snowshoes across the crisp snow in among the pines, I'm keenly aware of the magic'of Muskoka.
