andon, Colleen Dewhurst, Jack;' Warden, Ian McShane, and
John Houseman headline an all-star, international cast in
this epic five-part, 12 -hour mini-series. In the opening three-
hour chapter, the stage is set following the death of Christ
for a rising confrontation between the early Christians,
Jewish zealots and the mighty Roman Empire. The re-
spected Rabbi Gamaliel tries to mediate a bitter split in the
Jewish community between traditionalists like Saul of Tar-
sus and the Nazarenes, led by the apostle Peter. Meanwhile,
Emperor Tiberius, in self-imposed exile on the Isle of Capri,
is too crippled by fear to effectively rule his corrupt empire.
The Emperor refuses to heed the warnings of his trusted
aide Nerva about a plot against him by Sejanus, the ambi-
tous commander of the Praetorian Guard. Nor is Tiberius
aware that Livilla, the beautiful widow of his murdered son,
Drusus - and the daughter of his ex -lover Antonia - is also

MONDAY, 9:00 P.M.-"A.D.".Pt. 2-5. Saul, who is later dra-

Valerius jeopardizes his army career by falling in love with
the Jewish slave Sarah; and Caleb arrives in Rome to find
his sister Sarah and train as a gladiator.
TUESDAY, 9:00 P.M. -"ALD.". Pt. 3-5. Caleb is intrigued that
one of his fellow gladiators is Corinna, the beautiful daugh-
ter of a Roman senator. Caligula risks an insurrection in
Judea by ordering statues of himself in Jewish temples, and
then he alienates his troops on the eve of a foolhardy inva-
sion of England; Paul's fervor on behalf of Christ nearly
costs him his life; and Valerius marries Sarah and later
joins a conspiracy to assassinate Caligula.
WEDNESDAY, 9:00 P.M.-"A.D.". Pt. 4-5. The stuttering, in-
secure Claudius succeeds Caligula as Emperor and orders
all Jews, including Sarah, expelled from Rome; Paul re-
turns
eturns to Judea as Herod Agrippa launches a crackdown on
the Christians; Valerius is blackmailed into joining the
"personal" staff of Messalina, the promiscuous wife of
Claudius; and Agrippina, the niece - and later wife - of
Claudius plots to have her son Nero -become the next Cae-
sar. (Part 5 will be shown Thursday at 8 p.m.)

Bill Cosby has become the
George C. Scott of television.
When Emmy Awards were -
presented last month,
Cosby's new series was.
honored for excellence in
television production. Cosby
refused the award, saying he
did not approve of awards
voted by a panel of judges,
nor did he like the idea of
artists competing with one
another. The story is
reminiscent of the mid -'70s
when actor George C. Scott
refused an Academy Award
for much the same reasons.
However, Cosby did agree
to accept the People's Choice
Awards, because they are
given to movies, television
productions and recordings
chosen as favorites by the
public ,in a Gallup poll. His
new comedy series was
named fav rite TV comedy
and favorite new TV show,
he was named favorite male
performer in a new TV series
and his co-star, Phylicia
Ayers -Allen, was chosen
favorite female in a new
series, tying in that category
with veteran actress Angela
Lansbury who stars in
"Murder, She Wrote".
Other top television
awards went to Tom Selleck
of "Magnum, P.1.", Linda
Evans and Joan Collins,
stars of "Dynasty", who
shared the favorite female
TV performer award,
"Miami Vice", named the
favorite new drama on TV,
Emmanuel Lewis of
"Webster", the favorite
young TV performer-,
"Sesame Street", the
favorite children's show, and
"Dynasty", the top TV
dramatic series. It defeated
"Dallas" and "Hill Street
Blues", the other top series,
to take that award.
Movie awards chosen by
the people went to Meryl
Streep and Clint Eastwood,
favorite female and male,
and "Beverly Hills Cop",
which was named favorite
movie. The star of that
movie, Eddie Murphy,
shared the favorite all-round
male performer award with
Selleck. The Murphy movie
was not even mentioned in
the list of Oscar nominees,
adding to accusations that
the Academy does not pay
enough attention to comedy
in its list of bests.
Music awards went to
Barbara Mandrell, Kenny
Rogers, Prince and his song,
"Purple Rain". Mandrell
also claimed the favorite all-
round female performer
award; the others in that
race were Barbra Streisand
and Dolly Parton.
A new category was added
this year. The people were
asked their choice as all-
time favorite entertainer. '
The top three were Clint
Eastwood, Frank Sinatra
and Bob Hope. Hope claimed
this very special award for
his years of entertaining the
American public and giving
freely of his time to brighten
the lives. of American ser-
vicemen.
