Two New Coins Celebrate National Parks Centennial tf The Royal Canadian Mint recently unveiled two new commemorative coins, a silver dollar and a $100 gold -, coin piece, to celebrate the Centennial of Canada's Na- tional Parks system. The first two legal tender coins minted were presented by the Honorable Harvie Andre, Minister of Supply and Ser- vices Canada to Canadian artist arid naturalist Robert Bateman in recognition of his devoted service in capturing on canvas the wonders of our wilderness. The silver dollar depicts a majestic moose standing in the setting of a mountain lake, while the mountains and trees tower.in the back- ground. `The $100 gold coin features a solitary bighorn sheep standing atop a cliff survey- ing the vast Canadian wil- derness. On both coins "1985 National Parks.— Paris Na- tionaux 1985" is inscribed. This is the first time that the Mint has introduced both a new silver dollar and a $100 gold coin. simultaneously. "The coins .capture the spirit and rugged beauty of the wilderness as it can be found in' the National Parks of Canada," said the Hon- orable Harvie Andre. The winning submissions for the commemorative de- signs featured on the reverse side of the silver dollar and the $100 gold coin were sub- mitted by Montreal -artist Karel Rohlicek and Toronto - artist Hector. Greville re- spectively. Rohlicek's eye-catching design for the silver dollar is the first design that -he -_has: had chosen for a coin. Roh- licek of Montreal, spe- cializes in graphic design and typography. He has a deep love of canoeing and skiing in the Canadian wil- derness that allowed him to truly capture the theme in his coin design. Greville's 'winning 1985 submission is not the first design he has had chosen for a coin. The 60 -year-old To- ronto artist also designed the 1984 Jacques Cartier com- memorative nickel „ dollar. Though now working in the field of computer graphics at Toronto's George Brown College, Greville used his ex- tensive background in draw- ings and painting to capture the rugged beauty and time- lessness of the Canadian wil- derness. The obverse of the $100 gold-- coin and the 'silver dollar bear the traditional profile of Her Majesty. Queen Elizabeth II designed in 1964 by Arnold Machin. This de- sign carries on the time honored tradition of all Ca- nadian legal tender coins. The 1985 silver dollar is 50 per cent fine silver and weighs 23.33 grams. It has a diameter of 36.07 mm and is available . in both "proof" and "brilliant uncirculated" qualities. The "proof" coin is available by mail order in North America from the Royal Canadian Mint for $17.50 and the `"brilliant uncirculated" coin for $12. The $100 gold coin is avail- able at $325. The coin con- tains one half troy ounce of pure gold with 8.3 per cent silver. It has a diameter of 27 mm. Both coins will be avail- able in April by mail order from the Royal Canadian Mint at PO Box 455, Station A, Ottawa, Ontario K1N 9G3 and from retail coin dealers everywhere. Mail orders must be received before De- cember 15,1985. McPHEE Mount Forest 323-4058 From your District Taxation Office REPORTABLE INCOME AND VOLUNTARY DISCLOSURE Many Canadian taxpayers are not clear about what in- come must be reported on their annual tax return and what need not be reported. The law states, quite simply, that all income, regardless of source `and whether or not the taxpayer receives an in- formation slip for it, must be included on the return. Many people assume, for instance, that income from a foreign source, such as a U.S. bank account or invest- ment, need not be reported to National Revenue. This is a false assumption and one which causes taxpayers to run the risk of being pro- secuted under the Income Tax Act. Income from forL eign investments must be re- ported, just as Canadian in- come must be. Canada's tax treaties with• other countries include provision for the ex- change of tax -related infor- mation, and many unsus- pecting Canadian taxpayers have found themselves in un- pleasant situations as a re- sult. Should a Canadian tax- payer, at any time, wish to COACH HOUSE REALTY INC.
