Says NDP could form
minority government
Federal NDP hoUseleader
Ian Deans says it is possible
for the New Democratic
Party to form a minority
government in Ontario.
Mr. Deans was in Stratford
March 23 to help kick-off the
unofficial cainpaignof Perth
New Democrat provincial
candidate Warren Ham of
Staffa.
Mr. Deans asked the
audience to remember 1975,
the year Stephen Lewis was
'NDP leader in Ontario and
came within eight seats of
forming a minority govern-
ment.
"New Democrats will not
just be the opposition, but
strongly fighting for mi-,
nority government posi ion,
he said. "We only nee55
seats."
A former provincial h8use
leader, Mr. Deans said the
political climate in Ontario
lends itself to a fight for any
of the three major political

parties to take the lead.
Mr. Deans said key areas
in the province for the NDP
are the Niagara Penninsula,
Windsor, Northern Ontario
and ridings in the Toronto
area.
The Hamilton area MP
criticized Prime Minister
Brian Mulroney for making
patronage appointments
after saying patronage
would be a thing of the past if
he were elected.
Mr. Deans also said Fir
nance Minister Michael Wil-
son, should not have an-
nounced the date of the
budget outside the House of
Commons. It has been a tra-
dition to announce the
budget date in the House, he
said.
And he said Canadians
should have been warned by
Prime Minister Mulroney
that"in January and Febru-
ary we have had the largest
single increase in unemploy-
ment in the last five years."
Mr. Deans said the Pro-
gressive Conservatives have
.also failed to tell the public
that Canadian oil prices will
rise to world prices in the
next two months.
"They haven't been able to
tell us the truth; they got
elected on false promises."
Mr. Deans said that every
decision the Conservatives
have made has been a detri-
ment to the average taxpay-
er in Canada.
Perth NDP Riding As-
sociation President Jack
that during the federal cam-
paign last summer, "the
NDP became of age in
Perth." He noted that the
party received over 15 per
.cent of the vote for thefirst
time.
"That all happened when
we were supposed to be
dead. Imagine , what would
happen if we were alive," he
said.
Mr. Verhulst said the
NDP's provincial candidate,
named last fall, "will hold on
to what we have accomplish-
ed".
Mr. Ham and Mr. Deans
called upon those in attend-
ance to offer their services.
Mr. Ham said the evening
had been planned for a long
time and that it was coinci-
dental that the event was
held the weekend Ontario
Premier Frank Miller was -
considering the possibility of
announcing a provincial
election,
