Neighbour's seed is no bargain
"Our neighbour grew some of that great
new feed barley last year," John told his
wife. "He's selling some of it for seed, and I
figure that we can save over $300 buying from
him instead of getting that fancy Certified
stuff from the elevator.
Sure John, you probably will save a few
buds on the punchase price. But there's a
good chance you'll get more than you
bargained for - like an invasion of noxious
weeds that you've spent a decade cleaning
out of your land or a seed borne disease that
will cut your stand by a third. Is it worth
gambling a few buds on seed that caries no
assurance of quality?
Under the law, seed must not be sold by
variety name unless it is pedigreed. The
'bargain' aspect of this purchase disappears
in a hurry if any one of a multitude of
potential problems ooarr in John's crop.
