Suzuki believes that "we must abandon our drive to control nature if we are to survive" and cites en- vironmental devastation;' global hunger, the threat of nuclear war and genetic manipulation as examples of man's use and abuse of power when dealing with nature. Suzuki has travelled around the world in- vestigating what different peoples, past and present, have believed about their role on earth. He takes an especially close look at how humans have taken control away from nature to manipfilate their own life processes of birth and death. And to verify his statements, the cameras visit a hospital emergency ward, a family home, aquariums, zoos, computer labs and beef farms. More than two million Canadians watched the first episode of `:A Planet For The Taking", an exceptionally high figure. The same episode also received wide critical acclaim. It is seen Wednesday evenings at eight o'clock. 0-0-0-0 A movie and stage per- former for almost 50 years, J. Pat O'Malley, that lovable Irish leprechaun, died last week at the age of 80. He made his Hollywood debut in a 1937 movie, "Lassie Come Home", and went on to characterroles in other movies, on the Broadway stage and on television. He also was the voice behind many Walt Disney animated characters. A loss to fine music was the death of Eugene Or- , mandy who died of pneumonia at the age of 85. For more than 40 years the conductor of the Philadel- phia Symphony Orchestra, ,he brought a luscious sound to instrumental recordings and new fire to live perform- ances. His baton could es- peci4lly make the string sec- tion falk and his music will continue to soothe many shattered nerves and bring beauty to many lives. In England, singer Matt' Munro lost his brief fight with cancer and this smooth and mellow voice was silenced in its early 50s. As a singer of love ballads and beautiful standards, Munro was tops. Wei can only be grateful that recordings allow us to listen again and again to lovely Music by this vocalist and other balladeers like Nat King Cole and Jim Reeves. "Who's on First" is the tale of a jealous husband, his wife, her magician friend and Camille, the hostess of the most disasterous party ever thrown. At least that's how it starts out. As the play progresses, a magic lamp (occupied ap- parently by a rather de- mented genie) causes the party -goers to relive the catastrophic party in a mul- titude of settings, with a fresh angle each time. The story is done in an oriental' setting, as well as hillbilly style and in a BOOR REVIEW TROUBLE IN TIM- BERLINE: By Max Brand. Dodd, Mead and Company (Canada) Ltd., Toronto. 224 pp. Reviewed by PERCY MADDUX The late Frederick Faust, who wrote western novels under the name of , Max Brand, was a master of the action story. "Trouble in' Timberline" is no exception. It is about a big brute named Barney Dviiker who just didn't know ![is own strength. A simple but honest fellow, he was the , Hercules of the West. The author gets him into many scrapes and incredible positions but always manages to get him out. Max Brand has a penchant for violence and there is violence in plenty in "Trouble in Timberline". You will find yourself catch - Mg your breath again and agatin. number of other ways. Con- sequently, the actors have to adapt to some drastic changes in the characters they play. Smith, who is directing the play, says this production "really challenges the four actors". Due to the constant transformations of the char- acters, "There are no char: acters to really build on," he says. Audiences will enjoy the comedic aspects of this play, which also features some in- triguing sound effects, says Smith. "Who's on First" was written by playwright Jack Sharkey and provides good fun family -type entertain- ment. The guild has chosen an experienced cast for this _production. Richard Jaun- zemis, of Harriston, a veter- an actor with a long list of stage credits, plays Don, the jealous husband. Flora Brown of Mount Forest plays his wife Alice; John Reid of Mount Forest is Ben the magician and Barbara Il- lingsworth, Kenilworth, por- trays Camille, the flustered hostess. In addition to "Who's on First", the guild is currently rehearsing the two one -act plays for their annual Dinner Theatre, to be held April 13, at the Moorefield Communi- ty Centre. The guild has decided to handle the entertainment at the dinner theatre, with two - theatre -oriented comedies "Next" and "Impromptu''. The evening includes a cock- tail hour from 6 p.m. to 7, dinner from 7 to 9, theatre from 9 to 10 and dancing from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are available only from D. Siep, call 338-3481. "Who's on First" is sched- uled for a six -night run at the Harriston Town Hall Thea- tre, on March 21, 22 and 23 and March 28, 29 and 30. For places where tickets are available see coming events.
