PSYCHIATRIC NURSING
PROGRAM C
This program is designed to build or
the previous knowledge and skills of
the registered nurse to increase com-
petency and skill in psychiatric nursing.
The program includes Ia review of the
current state of psychiatric nursing and
expanding roles in practice, mental
health - mental illness, conceptual
models of care, therapeutic modalities,
including one-to-one relationships and
clinical syndromes in theadult popula-
tion.
Through supervised clinical experience;
students, will have the opportunity to
apply knowledge and skills in the
practice area.
The program will also provide a flexible
opportunity to pursue individualized
goals. Eligible applicants will be em-
ployed in the field of psychiatric nurs-
ing or equivalent. (To be admitted,
applicants must complete an applica-
tion form, questionnaire, participate in
a personal interview, complete a written
pre-test (open book) and meet health
requirements.)
The program is 492 hours in length and
takes approximately" 11/2 years to com-
plete on a part-time basis. No classes
are held during July and August. The
' following modules are offered in the
Spring of 1985:
Module III
The Therapeutic Process And
Conceptual Models Of .Care
This module focuses on the therapeutic
process and how the decision to use a
certain model or models of care is
made. The specific tasks and activities
used in psychiatric nursing , a're de-
scribed within four models of mental
health care. How a psychiatric nurse
seeks relevant clinical data, formulates.
or makes a nursing diagnosis of the
client's problems and decides on a
nursing treatment program is explored.

Nurs`e� - Client Interaction
The therapeutic use of self is a key
asset in psychiatric nursing. Attitudes
and • human qualities that facilitate the
therapeutic relationship are discussed,
along with specific steps and tech-
niques in interviewing and relationship
development,
Through use of group tutorial, students
are provided with the opportunity to
discuss format, communications issues,
utilize other students as learning re-
sources and gain feedback from peers,
This module runs concurrently with the
clinical module: Nurse - Client Interac-
tion. 21 hours. Fee: $21
Module V
Clinical: Nurse - Client Interaction
This clinical placement gives the psy-
chiatric nurse an opportunity to employ
the. skills. and knowledge acquired. in.
establishing and maintaining a one-to-
one therapeutic nurse -client relation-
ship. 120 hours. Fee: $120
Module VI
Clinical Syndromes
In this problem -based .module, the
student will explore the major adult
psychiatric conditions with one session
on the aged adult. The various types of
maladaptive behaviour are viewed as
ways of coping with stress so as to
maintain psychological equilibrum. Dis-
cussion of the therapeutic nurse -client
relationship focuses ' upon themes or
patterns of behaviour, which are dis-
cussed in terms of assessment and the
development of goals for nursing inter-
vention. The focus of this course is on
the client's behaviour and not on
his/her illness. Knowledge of diagnos-
tic terminology is included as an essen-
tial element for understanding and
communication within the care team.

In the Spring of 1985 Modules III, IV, V,
VI will be offered at Doon, Guelph and
Stratford.

sufficient knowledge 'and experience to

REGISTERED NURSE -
REFRESHER PROGRAM C
The Registered Nurse • - Refresher
Program is a . three hundred hour
program designed to assist the regis-
tered nurse who has not actively
practiced nursing for a period of time to
demonstrate competence in accordance
with the current standards of Nursing
Practice of the College cif Nurses of On-
tario.
It focuses on the use of the nursing
process as applied to caring for individ-
uals with medical -surgical health con-
cerns.
The program consists of four courses,
and is offered on a part-time basis in the
distance educatid✓n mode. The courses
are:
1. Trends in Nursing and Health Care
Delivery (20 hrs.)
2. Human Anatomy and Physiology
(50 hrs.)
3. Current Nursing Theory (80 hrs.)
4. Clinical Nursing (150 hrs.)
The distance education mode, used for
the theory component, is characterized
by the following:
a) detailed study guides to facilitate
independent learning by the student
b) learning resource center in the com-
munity where the course is offered -
including book, and A-V resources
c). weekly tutorial meetings of the stu-
dent group in a particular community,
with teacher contact either in person,
or by teleconference.
Clinical nursing offers 150 .hours of
supervised clinical practice in a medical -
surgical active care setting.
It is integrated with the Current Nursing
Theory course.
Applicants must have a current College
, of Nurses of Ontario Certificate of
Competence, or a letter of eligibility from
the College of Nurses of Ontario. To be
admitted, applicants must complete an
application form t.and questionnaire,
participate in a personal- interview and
meet health requirements.
All applications are dated upon receipt
and acceptance is ,then on a first come
first served basis.

Spring 1985 - this start date will include
a seven week summer break, June 28 to
August 18. Session completion approxi-
mately December 20, 1985.
In the Fall of 1985 the Registered Nurse
Refresher Program will be offered in
Doors, Guelph and Stratford.

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT
PROGRAM C
Effective management of volunteers
requires a very different approach and
set of skills than are used for other
kinds of management. Today many
organizations engage a coordip t to
work with paid and volunteer sip to
help achieve the goals of an organiza-
tion. The aim of this 125 ,hour program
is to provide Coordinators of Volunteers
with management skills needed to func-
tion effectively in this capacity. Thro!egh
application of management theories the
student will gain insights into leader-
ship, motivation,human resources de-
velopment, organizational climate, plan-
ning and evaluation.
