Responding to the requests made by
Health Professionals within the commu-
nity, Conestoga College's Continuing
Education Department will offer
courses to address the current needs
in various health care areas.
These courses are designed for people
involved in helping professionals, as
well as those with special personal
interest in a specific topic.
Overview 'Of Human Anatomy
And Physiology A
This course is intended for those who
wish to enter Health Sciences courses
and/or programs (e.g. Nursing, RNA's,
Medical Technology, etc.) and who
need review in Biology to update their
knowledge. The general public could
also attend this -as a General Interest
course. This is a non-credit course.
The main focus of this course is to
provide the student with an overview of
basic human anatomy and physiology.
The body systems included are the
Integumentary, Musculoskeletal, Car-
diovascular, Digestive, Urinary, Respi-
ratory, Nervous and Endocrine Sys-
tems. Related medical terminology will
also be included with an. emphasis on
prefixes, suffixes and combining forms.

Topics include: Cell Structure, Muscle

This is a credit course and will be of
benefit to persons desiring entry to a
diploma nursing program.

Health Professionals - Unit 1 A
Effective leadership and management
in health care settings is a topic of
great concern among service person -

care professionals in management po-
sitions or those planning to move into
such a role. It will provide an overview
of management theory and principles
and highlight their application to the
health care system. It will focus on
specific strategies used to enhance
leader effectiveness including organiz-
ing; teaching -learning, decision making,
changing, managing conflict and evalu-
ation.

Communications Series For
Health Professionals: Interviewing
And Counselling A
Competence in communication, until
recently largely overlooked is now
widely recognized as a significant ther-
apeutic skill for the health professional.
This course will` continue to develop
students' skills in establishing helpful
relationships with patients and in re-
cognizing and dealing with the emotion-
al aspects of care. Through participa-
tion in group discussions, simulated
interviews, lab sessions, and self as-
sessment, students will examine in
depth the communications process,
effective therapeutic relationships, in-
terviewing and counselling techniques.

Dental Assistant Radiation
Protection A
This course is offered by Conestoga
College in cooperation with Fanshawe
College.
The course provides the Dental Assis-
tant who does not have a C.A.A.T.
certificate but is currently working in a
dental office and processing X-rays
with an opportunity to gain the knowl-
edge and skills required by Bill 17/ the
Healing Arts Radiation Protection
(HARP) Act. On satisfactory completion
the participant will be eligible to write
the Provincial Examination.
Course Prerequisite: At the time of
registration, candidates are required to
submit evidence that they are currently
working in dental offices and are
routinely taking and processing X-rays.

Nutrition In Sickness And In
Health

Learn what to eat for health - at each
age. Learn how diets must be altered
for disease conditions from diabetes to
cancer.
This course is aimed at health profes-
sionals and paraprofessionals, (e.g.
nurses, dental professionals, food ser-
vice supervision). It is open to others as
a General Interest course. The course,
is non-credit but may be taken for
affirmation. Various topics of interest
for helping professionals involved with
diet planning and implementation are
discussed in this time.

Health professionals who want a dif-
ferent and refreshing viewpoint of heal-
inj patterns, are able to utilize tech-
niques investigated in relation to a wide
variety of topics such as therapeutic
touch, music therapy, colour therapy,
and kinesiology.

CRITICAL CARE PROGRAM C
This 395 hour program meets the
provincial requirements for Critical Care
Certification. It will provide Registered
Nurses with specialty knowledge and
skills in critical care nursing. Indepen-
dent study, classroom participation and
supervised clinical experience will en-
courage students to utilize the nursing
process as a framework for practice.
This program consists of the following
courses:
