Child Welfare
Children, as well as being our greatest
resource, are the .most vulnerable seg-
ment of our society. Recognizing their
special status, the Provincial and Fed-
eral Governments have reviewed old
and introduced new legislation and
regulations affecting children. This
course will provide a base of knowl-
edge in Child Welfare for child care
workers considering a career in Child
. Welfare, social workers, volunteers,
' foster parents, board members and
other interested community members.

Employee Assistance Programs
The course would be of benefit and
should be directed to managers of
personnel departments and the staff of
their departments, union executives,
union stewards and union representa-
tives, EAP co-ordinators and members
of EAP committees in businesses and.
other organizations. The course would
be of benefit to organizations with
employee assistance programs- in
,operation and also for organizations
considering the establishment of an
EAP. It will use films, EAP materials
that have been developed by the
Addiction Research Foundation and
other organizations, reference reading
and bibliography. The methods of in-
structjon,_ wilt include lectures, small
group discussions, general class dis-
cussions, questions, *role playing and
experimental learning activities.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION DIPLOMA
PROGRAM (For Part -Time
Students)
(Note: Graduates of this program meet
the academic and field work require-
ments for certification by the Associa-
tion for Early Childhood Education, On-
tario.)
The Early Childhood Education Diploma
Program is delivered part-time to meet
the needs of mature students who are
presently wor-king in the field of early
childhood education and/or are unable
to take the program on a full-time
basis. The curriculum and field place-
ment components of the progiarn are
the same as for the full-time two-year
Diploma Program offered by Conestoga
College, Part-time students will require
approximately four years to complete
the program.
The primary goal of the Early Child-
hood Education Diploma Program is to
foster and encourage the continuing
self -growth of students by providing a
.problem -solving approach to learning.
The program offers the fundamental
knowledge and skit,ls for those wishing
to work with yg ung children. The
overall development of children is ex-
amined along with the techniques and
procedures used in setting the stage
for and guiding the Behaviour of pre-
schoolers in a nursery and day-care
environment. Also considered are spe-
cial -needs children, along with pro-
grams to meet these needs.
Courses in the Early Childhood Educa-
tion Diploma Program are offered on a
part-time basis in the evening through.
the ontinuing Education Department.

'Cod a Exemptions:
Exemptions may be granted for
courses that have been successfully
completed at other recognized institu-
tions. Course outlines and transcripts
should be submitted to the Registrar's
Office when application to the program
is made. The Early Childhood Educa-
tion Co-ordinator will evaluate the
courses and recommend exemptions to
the Registrar when applicable.
Field Placement:
Field Placement experiences are a
_required part of the Program. These
experiences take place during the day
and will be arranged on an individual
basis by the Program Coordinator. The
Early Childhood Education Diploma
Program requires a total of 768 hours
of field placement. A minimum of 190
hours of this field Iilacement must take
place in the College lab school. This
can be arranged on Mondays from
September . to April inclusive or in
blocks of time from May to August.
Exemptions for previous work experi-
ence may be granted, up to a maximum
of 348 hours, after the lab school
placement ttas been completed and
evaluated. A summary of full and
part-time employment should be sub-
mitted along with references from em-
ployers in order to have requests for
exemptions reviewed by the Program
Co-ordinator.
Program Eligibility:
1. An Ontario Secondary School Grad-
uation Diploma or equivalent',
2. An Academic Upgrading Level IV
Certificate or equivalent.
3. Nineteen Years of Age or older.
Applicant Assessment:
1. Preference is given to applicants
with Level IV/Grade 12 standing in
English and to applicants with equi-
valency.
2. Transcripts of applicants with an
OSSGD are assessed for academic
strength in Level IV/Grade 12 En-
glish.
3. Applicants without an OSSGD or out
of school for two or more years may
• be assessed to determine readiness
in English.
4. Assessment of communication skills
through' a College administered test.
5. Assessment of the information con-
tained in completed ,Conestoga Col-
lege medical forms,.
6. Assessment of the information con-
tained in the completed Early Child-
hood Education Program Question-
naire. Applicants are required to visit
a day care centre or nursery school
to complete one of the items on the
questionnaire.
7. Assessment of personal suitability
through an interview with program
personnel.
Program Admission:
Applicants will be admitted to this
program based on the program eligibili-
ty requirements and the applicant as-
sessment results.
Program Information:
Applicants must attend an Early Child-
hood Education Information Meeting
prior to being granted an interview. The
deadline' for applications to the Early
Childhood Education Diploma Program
(for part-time students) beginning Fall
'85 is June 28, 1985.
