in area schools
Once again, as part of our PADDYFEST
celebrations, the Kinsmen Club of Listowel
is pleased to present "Mariposa in the
Schools" to the students and staff • of
Listowel and area schools.
The,goal in presenting "Mariposa in_the
'School.'" is to offer students an awareness
and appreciation of Canadian musical tra-
ditions and the common roots of our varied
culture in an informative and enjoyable
experience.
This year the featured performer is Eric
Nagler. As a native New Yorker, Eric
Nagler grew up during the 1960s folk music
heyday.
For the past four years he has devoted
his energy to children's music, working
extensively as a soloist with "Prologue to
the Performing Arts", accompanying the
popular group of Sharon, Lois and Bram in
their larger concerts, and with "Mariposa
in the Schools".
Eric Nagler's first children''s album,
"Fiddle up a Tune", has recently been re-
leased on the Elephant Records label.
In his program entitled "Fiddle Fan-
tasy", Eric leads the participants .through
a farrago of fiddle facts, fantasies, stories'
and tunes.
The group investigates the components
of the fiddle's sound, the superstitions and
the special qualities which make it so im-
portant in folk tradition.
Olden day,stories of neighborhood musi-
cal gatherings lead to a recreation of
Grandpa Sullivan's Parlour, with the stu-
dents joining in on a variety of homemade
instruments such as cornstalk and cigar
box fiddles, washtub bass, combs, rattles,
spoons, and bongos.
The material is drawn from a rich vari-
ety of traditional and contemporary sour-
ces.
