Paddyfest News—Wednesday, March 6, 1985 If you thought last year's was a success Kinsmen promise biggest bash ever THERE WAS DANCING—in the aisles during a Sharon, Lois & Bram concert which took place during last year's Pad- dyfest. DON'T MISS. PAD ! - YFEST MA CH 3 - 16 It's that time of year again. The Kinsmen -Club of Listowel is presenting, for the eighth consecutive year, "Paddyfest", the festival of fun for everyone. Paddyfest 1985 got under way on Sunday with a family concert, featuring Sandra Beech at the Listowel and District Secondary School. Events continue until March 16 and include "Mariposa in the Schools" with Eric Nagler, as well as -the Miss Paddyfest pageant, an Atom hockey tournament, a girls' ringette . tournament, a lost -heir tournament and on and on and on! The Kinsmen are confident you'll find a number of events to your liking as the ' "festival of fun foreveryone" continues. The Kinsmen welcome the involvement of two other service clubs in Paddyfest 1985 as the Listowel Rotary Club presents "Vegas Night" on March 8 and the Optimist Club of Wallace Township takes the helm at the Paddyfest step -dance competitions on March 10. - New to Paddyfest is a bowling tour- nament for mentally handicapped children to be held on March 7 under the joint sponsorship of the Paddyfest Committee and Coca-Cola Ltd. The event will take place at the Listowel Lanes and will possibly become an annual feature of the Paddyfestivities. All funds raised during Paddyfest 1985 will be invested in the community so when you support the Paddyfest, you are con- tributing to the community, at the same time. The Kinsmen Club of Listowel would like to thank the Listowel and area businesses for their contributions and involvement in putting Paddyfest together. While you're enjoying the activities,•the Kinsmen encourage your patronage of local businesses. - last year's success LISTOWEL - North America's ,largest Irish festival, the Paddyfest, thrown by the Listowel Kinsmen, will kickoff on March 3. But it will need a lot of energy to out -do last year's activities. Record crowdswere on hand at the Paddyfestivities last year and the Listowel Kinsmen report such events as the annual parade, competitions and dances were an unqualified success. Marjorie Nuhn, of Listowel, was the big winner in the Pot -of -Gold draw winning a total of $1000 for holding the lucky ticket. Maureen Basler was crowned Miss Paddyfest. T Listowel resident won the title on th gth of her step -dancing skills, public speaking ability and overall enthusiasm. The Listowel Fire Department . team captured first prize in the bed races and the soap box derby was won by Shawn Donegan. The tug-of-war competition was won by the Listowel Has-beens and the step -dance competition, which had to be delayed one week because of stormy weather had about 75 entries. The overall solo dance winner was Shannon Preszcator of Clinton. Ken Newbigging was judged having the best beard while Laverne Kuepfer had the most colorful and Ian Anderson the most original. A well-known trio of children's recording artists, Sharon, Lois and Bram, had children at a concert singing, dancing and clapping. The dances were long -anticipated and great fun. , Other events, such as the Paddyfest road races, the log sawing competitions, the arm wrestling championships, the gym- nastic demonstrations and the sales, were well attended and thoroughly enjoyable. At the 1985 festivities, the Listowel Kinsmen have many of the same events lined up and a few new ones. This year, in fact,M1the Kinsmen will be using a'brand new stage for the events, one twice as big as the old one. Paddyfest kicked off with the opening of the step -dance competitions and a family concert featuring Sandra Beech, a sister of Will and George of the Irish Rovers. Also on the schedule: a Vegas night, the pageant, a pool tournament, an Atom hockey tournament, a ringette tour- nament, a bonspiel and other sporting "events. A highlight for hockey fans will be the showdown between the Listowel Sheik's Oilers and the Harriston Blues. Although no one can tell how these events will end up, the Listowel Kinsmen (fan guarantee a good time and they promise to be true to their slogan this year, "The festival of fun for everyone." WASP
