The very first time I washed the floor, using a mop dipped in cold water, and whenever the the rat- tan legs were wet, they ran and left an orange stain on the linoleum. 1 have used various cleaners and even paint re- mover without results. The stains are still there. They have not become larger nor have they faded. What do you suggest I do next? Please help. — Mrs. Alice T., Tenica, Fla.. A. An important thing to remember in trying to re move stains from any sur- face — there is a certain element of gamble. Some stains are not removable. But here is a suggestion. Try a solution off tri -sodi- um phosphate mixed two- thirds cup in one quart of household bleach and three quarts of warm water. Then scrub with a stiff brush or 4-0 steel wool. Test this in a small area first to see. -how -it "works. Oxalic acid might take off the stains. However, linoleum has .a printed de- sign and too much scrub- bing could damage the de- sign. Q. Now the upper portion of the building is completed and we wish to lay tiles on the concrete floor of the upper section, How can we remove the tar from con- crete? — W.C.N., Water- bury, Conn. A. Use dry ice, wearing gloves -to protect the hands while'working. The dry ice will harden the tar. Re- move as much as possible by scraping it off. Then make a paste of fullers earth or dry portland cement and kerosene or naphtha. Be very careful of the fire hazards. Cover the remaining tar with a thick layer of this paste, placing a sheet of thin plastic on top to retard evaporation. Repeat this treatment until as much tar as possible is removed. Scrub with a strong, hot solution of trisodium phos- phate, followed by rinsing with clear water.
