Every
once in a while, a
new notion strobes across
the brain pan and one is
forced to ask one's self,
"How come it took 2,000
years of recorded history to
come up with that?"
You wonder, for instance,
how humanity survived
without Dancercise. Could
there have been intelligent
life on the planet before
Roughage? Would the inven-
tion of the exercise sandal or
the negative -gravity shoe
have made Napoleon's long
march from Moscow any
more bearable? Would the
Scarsdale Diet have made
Catharine the Great less
great?
And where would the
Protestant church be today if
Catharine of Aragon had had
her colors done?
These days, everyone I
know is getting colors done
in order to look better, feel
better and live more, effec-
tive lives. Now the big
question at coffee break is
not "What sign are you?"
It's "What season are you?"
Carole Jackson, the lady
who has merchandised the
notion of individual seasonal
color palettes based on skin
tone says her childhood was
just hell because the powder -
blue school uniform she was
required to wear made her
look gray, dull and listless.
Then one day Carole grew
up, graduated and invented
Color Me Beautiful. She has
never looked back, and her
bank account is a nice
healthy black.
You can discover whether
you are a Winter, Spring,
Summer or Autumn through
a personal color consulta-
tion, which costs about as
much as a week's groceries.
Or you can get Carole's book
from the library and play
around,M, with some color
swatches. After answering
some probing questions
about yourself, (Am I really
terrific in camel, ivory and
golden browns? Do I have a
closet full of clothes and
nothing to wear?) You'll
probably arrive at your
appropriate season and your
life will be super from then
on.
I love looking at the book.
Typical Springs, Winters,
Summer and Autumns are
pictured wearing the right
colors and the wrong colors.
I commend Carole Jackson
for the honest approach she
has taken to the terrible
twins of fashion photog-
raphy, the Before and After
pictures. Usually the poor
wretch in the Before shot is
pictured squinting into a
Brownie camera held by her
palsied ten -year-old nephew,
while After is snapped by a
Karsh clone, with dramatic
lighting and an expression on
her face that suggests that
she is being gently stroked
on a part of her body that is
just out of camera range.
No such tricks are em-
ployed in Color Me Beautiful.
Carole Jackson's models are
photographed in right and
wrong colors by the same
photographer, in the same
studio with same lighting.
The pictures do prove that
your mother was right all
along. Some colors make you.
look like an ambulatory
corpse; some colors make
you look as healthy as a'
peach. You should wear the
peachy ones.
I read the book and
examined the photos, and it
appears that'I share a season
with Elizabeth Taylor. Her
colors are mine, so when Liz
has a garage sale to get rid of
all her fall clothes, I'll be
there. Liz and I are also big
on diamonds, but I think she
liked—,them evens ore the
invention of CMB.
Marilyn Monroe was a
Spring. Carole Burnett is an
Autumn. Princess Grace
was a Summer and so is
Queen Elizabeth.
The library copy of CMB
has the color plate of Sum-
mer's palette ripped right
out, so you can add to sum-
mer's characteristics of
visible pink on the cheeks,
and ash blonde .hair a
strong streak of larcen
Men are getting their
colors done too, which means
Labatt's may have to re-
think its beer labels.
Even babies are having
their plump little cheeks
scrutinized by color consul-
tants so they can start their
lives in sleepers appropriate
to their season. This isn't a
bad idea. My kids were born
BP (Before Pampers) and I
can only hope that an infancy

Poinsettia
By PATRICK DENTON
Among the more wel-
come gifts over the Christ-
mas season are certain
houseplants which have
come to be associated with
this festive period,, of the
year — specimens such as
the ,poinsettia, the cyclamen
and the azalea.
1 Quite often, one little nag -
,problem arises, insofar
'fie, recipient is con-
cerned, and that is the fact
he or she knows absolutely
nothing about how to care
for this pretty little strang-
er.
There is usually a little
card attached to the plant
giving some instructions but
these tenth to be somwhat
limited, outlining only the
plant's immediaterequire-
ments in its newhome with-
out going into any detail on
its year-round care, particu-
larly with respect to bring-
ing it back into bloom for
. next Christmas.
Therefore, I thought „ it
would be helpful this week
and next to discuss this sub-
ject, dealing with the most
popular of the Christmas gift
plants so that your enjoy-
ment of them can be extend-
ed beyond their immediate
beauty.
While I don't have any
statistics before me to sub-
stantiate it, there's little
doubt the most popular of all
Christmas gift plants is the
poinsettia, mostly the scar-
let colored variety, although
different colors including a
creamy yellow -green are
gaining favor.
The pointsettia's ances-
tors were tall,, weedy shrubs
thatgrew wild' in Central
America and careful breed-
ing over the years has re-
sulted in today's potted plant
that is timed to produce its
seasonal scarlet and green
for the Christmas season.
With the household getting
back to normal following the
festive season, you'll want to
place your poinsettia in a
sunny window, but making
certain it dosn't suffer tem-
peratures lower than 62 de-
grees (18 Celsius) by night
nor higher than 72 (22 Cel-
sius) by day. If you can't be
certain it won't be too chilly
at night, then move your
plant back into the room.
Similarly, use warm tap
water to Moisten the soil
thoroughly but only when
the soil feels dry to the
touch.
When the colored bracts
start falling, sometime in
the next six weeks- or so,
don't fret for this is the
plant's natural resting peri-
od and a very crucial time
insofar as caring for it. It
should be moved to a cool,
light place and the watering
reduced till the soil is almost
bone dry. The plant will re-
vert to nature and reach for
the sky unless you prune
rather drastically, in April,

pointers
reducing the stems to three -
inch stubs, controlling
"bleeding" by rubbing a lit-
tle powdered charcoal into
the cut surfaces. If you wish,
cut the prunings into six-
inch slips which may be
rooted to make more plants.
Now, repot your freshly
pruned poinsettia into fresh
soil, water lightly and place
in a sunny but cool window
and when newshoots sprout
from the stubs, thin out to
three or four so the plant
won't be too bushy. After all
danger of frost is past in the
late spring, sink the pot to
its rim outdoors, with morn-
ing, sun only, and keep wa-
tered and fed through the
summer.
And here is where the
crunch comes in the culture
of the poinsettia: the process
of bringing it back indoors in
the fall. It is absolutely es-
sential that the plant re-
ceives up to 12 or 14 hours of
unbroken darkness every.
night, starting the first to
second week of October.
Your poinsettia will need
lots of sunshine during the
day but it must have the
Dracula treatment after the
sun sets — keep it in a room
where no lights are turned
on, even momentarily, be-
cause this would create an
artificially long day and
would delay blooming.
Given this careful tending,
and given freedome from
pestinfestations or other ad-
verse conditions, your poin-
settia should give you the
same amount of pleasure
next Christmas it did this
year.
