Charles Dickens' "A
Christmas Carol" was
published in 1843 and has
been captured on film at
least five times, but this
year's CBS version of the
classic tale could very well
become the all-time favorite.
Unfortunately those
without cable television
would have missed the Dec.
17 airing of this timeless
story of the love and charity
of Christmas.
That rough, gruff actor,
George C. Scott, portrays the
miserly Ebenezer Scrooge.
The name Scrooge lives on in,
'our vocaary today as
someone miserable and stin-
gy. One hearing of Scrooge's
brusque, "Christmas comes
but once a year r poor ex-
cuse for picking a man's
pockets" and you realize
he's not up for"Citizen of the
Year".
You see, Ebenezer Scrooge
is a man hardened to life's
small pleasures. His only
concern is making more
money and he even
begrudges his poor em-
ployee, Bob Crachitt's
request to spend Christmas
with his wife and children.
The tale is often told and
needs very little explanation.
On the night of Christmas
Eve Scrooge is visited by a
"dreadful apparition" of his
seven-years=dead partner
Jacob Marley.
Marley, in all his chains
and ghostly manner,
foretells of the three spirits

which visit Scrooge that
night: the Ghost of Christ-
mas Past, the Ghost of
Christmas Present and the
Ghost of Christmas Yet to
Come.
Over the course of the
night Scrooge starts to
realize and repent the errors
of his ways. He turns over a
new leaf and starts a life of
generousity and love for his
fells W men.
This 1984 version of "A
Christmas Carol" is a lush
treat for the eyes. It was
filmed in the medieval
English town of Shrewsbury.
Its colors and exactness for
detail give the viewer the
impression that he really has
traveled back to Dickens'
time.
The script has remained
true to the original story and
is warm and familiar for
lovers of the tale.
Scott has been reported as
saying he thinks the Alistair
Sim portrayal of Scrooge in
the 1940s classic film is the
best, but most critics will
judge Scott modest, as his
Scrooge is superlative.
Supporting actors David
Warner and Susannah York
as the Crachitts draw raves,
as does newcomer Anthony
Walters as their stoic
crippled child Tiny Tim.
Some people might argue
for past versions of "A
Christmas Carol", but this
new and heartwarming
version gets this reviewer's
vote.
