Page 6--Crossroad9--Pec. 24, 1984 THE REAL BUSINF,SS OF LIFE The Christmas season seems to be increasingly overshadowed by commer- cialism and by retailers' promotions. All but forgotten is the religious significance of t11'e holiday. It is not sur- prising then that anti - business sentiments, always latent in our society, are re- kindled. Resentment of business has deep roots in our past, and it extends far beyond any conflict over religious observances. In the Middle Ages economic activity was a part, but only that, of life in general. It was only much later that economic life emerged into a special category, one that has become so conspicuous in much of the world. In medieval society the religious aspect .of life was pre-eminent. The real Can'ada s Business by Bruce Whitestone business of life then was salvation, and by focusing on that, people were able to ignore their pervasive poverty. Medieval theology was so inextricably involved with economics that it came to dominate the economic process. For instance, lend- ing money at interest was considered usury and, there- fore, a violation of God's Law. Economic motives were suspect so profits and business in general were viewed by many as inherent- ly evil. Business was regarded as unworthy so pricing policies were looked upon with contempt. The medieval religious leaders were very concerned with "just price". Thomas Aquinas wrote that, "It is wholly sinful to practice fraud for the pur- pose of selling a 'thing for more than its just'price". All of this led to several ..for home or office AT.A.GLANCE.. How- ever, if the seller had paid too much for the article in the first place, the "just price" at which it could be resold became uncertain. Also, how much was the worker to charge for his added value? Michelangelo's efforts should have been more valuable than those of an ordinary worker. In the Middle Ages many in regular business stopped to consider the moral principles involved in their business transactions. They frequently tried to make restitution for their "sins" by charitable contributions; guilt was an integral part of money making. If a society is to change or expand, however, people must be free to seek gain, and economic and social mobility must be en- couraged. Aggressive competition is an essential part of this process, but that attitude itself can lead to all kinds of abuses. It is obvious that there are no easy answers to the moral dilemnas in commercial ac- tivity, but even at Christmas we must realize that we can- not afford to condemn business in general. While people will • go to their tasks essentially to make money, there is nothing wrong with that as long as moral consid- erations are not ignored. • Gray seal THE Q.a1CSOAL WQRO MA38 PUULE. There are many different kinds of true seal, and none of these has ears on the outside. On the other hand, sea lions have outside ears, and a dense undercoat from which costly fur gar- ments are made. The gray seal is found on both 'shores of the' North Atlantic. The male seal spends the mating season battling to assemble his harem of cows, females. And he's very jealous and fights if any . of his wives stray into another. bull's herd. The bull seal grows to about 12 feet in length, and is found especially in the British Isles near Ireland or north of Scotland, near the Orkneys. The seal computes with human fishermen for valuable salmon, a habit which has caused the gov- . ernment to want to control the seal population.
