Scattered around the gallery are paintings of horse:, poultry, and allasorts of domestic animals that illustrate Butler's meticu- lous artistry. The most spectacular single work is a huge paint- ing of every farm animal you can think of. It shows cows, sheep, swine, and chickens moving from a farmyard to a fair, and finally to the Coliseum at the CNE. Crossroads -Dec. 12, 1984 -Page 15 ' The original painting took a full year to complete, and Ross estimates that he touched the big canvas with paint more than 300,000 times before the work was finished. Another of Butler's .classics is called "Winners at the Royal". A typical Oxford County farm land- scape forms the background for nine magnificent Holsteins, all of them the finest of the breed. Ross Butler has had all sorts of honors heaped upon him. But it wasn't always that way. During the Great Depression, he'd sell a paint- ing for a meal or a pair of pants. These days he can write his own ticket, and paints when he feels like it. One of his big joys in life is showing visitors around his gallery. He's a farm boy who went to the top - in his own well - cultivated field. 4oin us in Gorda for a PRE CHRISTMAS FUN NIGHT And take advantage of SANTA'S SUPER CASH AND, CARRY SAVINGS FOR 4 HOURS ONLY!' Birds reverse sex The level of male hor- mones in female birds is so high that a hen whose ovar- ies are diseased or removed may become a fully func- tioning cock, and a female canary will sing like the male. But castration of the male causes only minor ef- fects and no such sex rever- sal. GLOBAL TELEVISION'S ROVING 11tEPORTER There's a beautiful farm on the outskirts of the South- western Ontario city of Woodstock, with a big white farmhouse that overlooks a most unusual barn. The barn is chock full of animals. Nothing too un- usual about that, except they're all on canvas. The barn is an art gallery jam- med with what are some of the world's best-known paintings of domestic ani- mals! The artist is Ross Butler. He's crowding 80, but has the same enthusiasm for his work as he likely had when, as a boy of 7, he began draw- ing the ante als that roamed' his father's farm in the near- by village of Norwich. Visitors to the Butler gallery gasp when they walk in and see the variety of the paintings, and especially the one of the Holstein cow they remember seeing when thy were schoolchildren. That cow made Butler famous in the late thirties. It was the True Type Holstein commissioned by the Holstein Association. The idea was tO show the ideal Holstein - something breeders could work toward. There were literally millions of prints and models of the cow sent around the world.
