Crisis centres are pro pec!
to deal with family violence
Work is underway in
Huron County on an
organization to help deal
with the problems of bat-
tered wives and abused
children, following a con-
ference on family violence
held at Sarnia recently.
Reporting to last week's
meeting of the Wingham
Board of Police Commis-
sioners, Police Chief Robert
Wittig termed the provin-
cially -sponsored conference
one of the best he had ever
attended. He added that
Holly Keil from Wingham as
well as others from the
county had also attended and
said it is hoped a county
board will be created to
provide crisis centres for
battered women and serv-
ices for abused children.
Asked about the incidence
of family violence in this
community, the, chief said
statistics from other areas
show it 'occurs in between
one-tenth and one-quarter of
families and he cannot see
much difference here.
"Il's not only the ones you
hear about," he noted.
"There are a number of
people out there you never
hear about."
He said an initial crisis -
oriented centre has been
located at Goderich and
there is a plan to set up 24
safe -houses in areas around
the county. For obvious
reasons, the locations of
these safe -houses will not be
disclosed, he said.
Board Chairman Jack
Gillespie commented that
fancily violence presents a
unique set of problems for
police, noting they are more
likely to be ' assaulted
themselves in such a
situation than in practically
any other type of call, and he
asked whether officers get
special training in dealing
with family quarrels.
Chief Wittig said that up to
now there has been very
little training offered on this
subject — "I got none in 20
years" — but that some of
the larger police forces are
developing special teams to
handle such calls.
He said groups including
the police are trying to ad-
dress a lot of the problems
posed by family violence,
adding that the laying of
criminal charges is not
always the best route to
follow, especially in smaller
communities where people
might be embarrassed at
having to testify in court
against a spouse or family
member.
In other business at the
meeting of the police board,
members ' discussed the
complaint about vandalism
at the Joe Kerr Ltd.
property, with Chief Wittig
saying he would take the
matter up with Mr. Kerr
personally.
Members also selected a
new letterhead for the board
to use in official
correspondence and decided
to purchase a new paper
shredder to replace one
which is broken. The board
offered to pay two-thirds of
the estimated $900 price if
the town, which also uses the
machine, will pick up the
remaining third.

commenced with a turkey

the devotions. Several carols
were sung and the call was

The group will cater to a
spring wedding and the plans
will be finalized later. It was
. decided to have "Secret
Pals" again in 1985.
Several shut-ins are to be
remembered with gifts this
Christmas and the birthday
box was passed around. The
meeting closed with a
prayer,
Rev. Bill Gray gave out the
"Secret Pal" gifts from the
gaily decorated Christmas
tree and a social half hour
was enjoyed.

The board's contribution
will come from the budget
previously earmarked for
the purchase of a video
cassette recorder, which is
not available.
The board also set a
deadline for dealing with the
various bylaws it must pass,
including a rules and
regulations bylaw governing
the operation of the police
force, a records retention by-
law permitting the destruc-
tion of old documents, a pub-
lic complaints bylaw and a
procedural bylaw to govern
the conduct of board meet-
ings. -
Members also discussed a
letter from the town's
planning advisory com-
mittee asking that police
monitor the flow of traffic in
the area of the SunRise
Dairy to see whether trucks
entering and leaving the
dairy are impeding traffic on
the main street.
The board secretary was
asked to get quotes on a life
insurance policy for
auxiliary police officers. The
board was told the officers
are covered by Workmen's
Compensation for injuries
while on the job, but there is
no substantial life insurance
coverage.
