BREAKAWAY GOAL—Leaving defencemen sprawled in his wake, Brett Carneron
streaked down the ice and waited until the last second before backhanding a shot
past -Paul Stever in the Walkerton net to give Wingham Ironmen a 3-2 lead in the se-
cond period Sunday afternoon. Wingharn led for most of the game, but was forced to
settle for a 6-6 tie with the Black Hawks.
Black Hawks battle
Ironmen to a 6-6 tie
By Peter Bauer
Paul Snodgrass' fourth
goal of the afternoon lifted
the visiting Walkerton Black
Hawks to a 6-6 tie with the
hometown Wingham Iron -
men Sunday.
Snodgrass scored his
fourth goal of the game with
just' over a minute
remaining. The Ironmen
then came very close to
blowing the single point ,as
they attempted to get one
last shot at the Walkerton
goal with seven seconds on
the clock.
Wingham's Kevin Coultes
made a drop pass to Jeff
Stanley at the top of the right
faceoff circle. Stanley, in
turn, passed back between
his skates thinking a second
man was at the point. Un-
fortunately there was no
Ironman in sight and the
Hawks broke in alone with
Rob Schistad inakin ' a pad
save one second before time
ran out.
The clubs, were . tied at 2-2
following first period action.
Coultes and Dave Montgom-
ery connected for the Iron -
men and Terry Hoehn and
Snodgrass were the Walker-
ton marksmen.
The Ironmen then held a
slim one -goal lead after two
periods, clinging to a 5-4
lead. Brett Cameron and
Troy Pocaluyko scored
powerplay markers, while
Kent Alton added a single for
the Ironmen.
Snodgrass. and Scott
Fortney replied for the Black
Hawks.
Snodgrass completed his
hat trick' eight minutes into
the final period, tying the
score at 5-5. Alton gave the
Ironmen the lead once more
with just over six minutes
remaining when Clarence
Rosevear took a five-minute
slashing major with 3:39
remaining. The Ironmen
seemed to be in good shape.
Unfortunately the home
team picked up a two -minute
minor to set up the equalizer
for Snodgrass. His point
shot, which was well off the
mark, deflected off an
Ironmen stick to elude
Schistad.
The Friday night game
against Kincardine has been
cancelled. The Ironmen will
host the Hanover Barons this
Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
A total of $22 was won in
the Ironmen 50-50 draw.
Bantam B team loses.
heartbreaker at tourney
The Wingham Bantam B
team traveled to London last
weekend to take part in the
Byron Optimists' Invitation-
al Hockey Tournament.
The local boys played their
first game last Saturday at 3
p.m. and came away with a
8-3 win over Byron. Shawn
Thompson opened the
scoring for Wingham in the
first with• an unassisted
marker, which turned out to
be the only goal of the period.
Byron tied it up in ;the
Second .
econd period before Paul
Edwards scored two
unassisted goals for
Wingham. Jeff Tolton put
one by the Byron goalie,
assisted by Edwards and
John MacDonald.
Tolton scored two more to
give him the hat trick,
assisted by Jason Moore on
one and Thompson and
Edwards on the other, to end
the period with Wingham
ahead 6-1. -
Byron scored two in a'row
in the third frame. Then
Peter Strong, assisted by
Edwards, shot one in and
Brad Crawford scored the
final goal of the game for
Wingham, unassisted.
Wingham played its
second game of the tour-
nament Sunday at 11 a.m.
against Parkhill and won
this match 3-2.
The first period was
scoreless. Mike Cullen
scored for Wingham in the
second, assisted by Moore.
Jeff Tolton scored to end the
period at 2-0 for Wingham,
assisted by Moore once
again.
Parkhill opened the
scoring in the third period
before Edwards chalked up
an unassisted marker for
Wingham. Parkhill scored
the final goal of the game,
but Wingham held on for the
3-2 win.
The championship game
was played at 4p.m. against
Tillsonburgon Sunday.
Edwards scored the only
goal of the first period,
assisted by Tolton, but
Tillsonburg tied, things up in
the second.
The third period was a
battle right to the end. Tolton
,scored,.. for . Wingham,
assisted by Strong, before
Tillsonburg tied the game
once more.
A five-minute overtime
period failed to determine a
clear winner, so shots on
goal were counted. Wingham
lost a heartbreaker when it
was determined the local
team had one less shot on
goal. The Wingham boys
came home with the silver
medal.
Dwayne Hickey and Chris
Fryfogle took turns in the
Wingham net and both
played superb games for the
team.
Midgets win
11-9 shootout
The Wingham Lions
Midgets traveled to Monkton
for their only appearance
this year and came away
with an 11-9 win.
What a shootout! When the
final buzzer went, a total of
20 goals had been scored.
Scoring for Wingham were
Jason Goodall, Dave Wheel-
er and Jamie .Robinson, all
with hat tricks, and single
markers went to Bill Camer-
on and Jeff Walden. Good

Pocaluyko pac#s Ironmen
to 7-5 vi9tory over Bears
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham Ironmen
overcame a 4-2 deficit
following two periods of play
to record a 7-5 come -from -
behind victory over the
Bears in Port Elgin last
Friday night.
Troy Pocaluyko paced the
Ironmen to the win with his
second three -goal production
of the season, giving him a
team -leading 16 goals in 12
games.
The goal production came
at a good time for Pocaluyko
and his teammates. He
scored once in the first
period and twice in the final
frame, including the game -
winner, to help the Ironmen
gain a much-needed victory
on the road. It also snapped a
)w -game scoreless stint for
Pocaluyko.
The two clubs emerged
from the ,first period dead-
locked at one goal each as
the Bears struck early on the
first shot of the game. Don
Matheson ripped a shot from
the left faceoff circle to
handcuff Pat Chambers.
Chambers quickly recov-
ered and made a big save on
Darrin Misselbrook as he
slipped behind the defence.
Pocaluyko tied the score
on a powerplay, deflecting a
point shot enroute to the
goal.
Misselbrook made it 2-1 on
a sharp -angled shot that
deflected behind Chambers
after hitting a skate near the
crease. Kent Alton tied the
score with 7:09 remaining in
the second period, con-
verting a short pass with a
quick shot to Mike Rourke's
stickside.
Ken Pederson restored the
Bears' one -goal lead after
Chambers made a great
glove save on a hard shot by
Brian Lush. He could not
control the rebound however
and Pederson batted it in for
a 3-2 Port Elgin lead.
Before the period ended
Dave Turner scored a short-
handed goal on a two -on -two
break. The centreman failed
to pick him up and he fired a
shot high over Chambers'
stickside shoulder.
Pocaluyko scored early in
the third period, but that
goal was nullified by a
second shorthanded goal,
this time by Lush, to restore
a Bears' two -goal margin.
Following an injury to
Chambers, the Ironmen
perked up and mounted good
pressure to eventually come
away with the 7-5 victory.
Tim Brown, Dave Montgom-
ery and Pocaluyko scored
within a two -and -a -half -min-
ute span midway through the
period to go ahead by a 6-5
count. Kevin Coultes added
an insurance marker into an
open net, while the team
played short-handed.
Rockers tie Oldstars
in a 6-6 seesaw battle
By Fraser Strong
The Wingham oldtimers'
hockey club, the Rockers,
hosted the Oldstars from
Kincardine in the Blyth
arena on Sunday. Although
both teams were under-
manned for this game, it
nonetheless turned into a
spirited contest in which the
lead changed hands twice
and ended in a fitting 6-6 tie.
Kincardine took a quick
lead after five minutes had
elapsed when Dave An-
derson slapped in a rebound.
Wingham thought it would
tie the game shortly after as
Strong set up Jim English in
the slot with Kincardine's
goalie nowhere in sight.
Feeling it was too early to tie
the game, English decided
instead to ring his shot off
the right goalpost and into
the corner of the rink.
Ross Davies did not feel
quite so generous five
minutes later when he
deposited a John Cullen pass
behind the Oldstars' goalie
for Wingham's first tally.
In the second period the
Rockers' Dave Magee
moved in on the opposition
net, deked and shot.
Jameson; in net for Kin-
cardine, got a piece of the
rubber, but Strong and
English were both "johnny
on the spot" to bat in the
rebound. Give one the goal,
— one an assist — and the
set-up to Magee.
Kincardine knotted the
score at two -all two minutes
later, then regained the lead
shortly afterward when Leon
Wilson scored his first of
two.
After sustained pressure in
the Kincardine zone
Winghartr's Ken Balzer got
off a low shot from the point.
Even though screened, the
Oldstar goalie blocked this
shot, however Strong
pounced on the rebound and
slapped it by the goalie for
Wingham's third goal.
Still in the second period,
Kincardine scored one of
those last-minute goals to
give the team a lift and a
lead heading into the third
frame.
The Oldstars got a quick
marker in the final period to
leap into a 5-3 lead with only
10 minutes left in the game.
Not to be outdone though,
Cullen, Wayne Brown and
Davies clicked for a
Wingham goal 15 seconds
later to get the Rockers back
on track. Cullen scored the
marker with the assists
going to his linemates.
Wingham then pulled
within one. English stated
that after clanging three
shots off the goalposts, he
thought he'd hear the sound
of the puck meeting the
netting. Even though Kin-
cardine scored again,
English said he liked the
noise his last shot made so
much that he repeated it
again. Rob Laurie with one
and Strong with two, assisted
on English's "silent" goals
to end the game at 6-6.

Optimist Tykes
lose to Brussels
The. Lockridge Memorial
Arena was the setting last
Saturday as the Wingham
Optimist Tykes met their
arch -rivals, Brussels, in a
high -scoring, fast -skating
match. In the end, the' local
lads were outhustled 8-4 by a
more aggressive Brussels
team.
Brussels opened the
scoring in the first period
with two goals. However
with one minute left in the
period, Wingham's Jamie
MacKay slammed in his
team's first goal, assisted by
Jeremy Brown and Travis
Baier to end the period at 2-1.
In the second period
Brussels again led the
scoring with three more
goals. Wingham finally
found the puck when Brett
Sangster scored, assisted by
Ryan Leibold.
The third 'period saw
Brussels score two more
goals.
MacKay found the net
again for Wingham, assisted
by Brown and Baier. Baier
scored one minute later and
the excitement began to
mount, but the time ran out
and Brussels added an in-
surance marker to end the
game at 8-4.
