Ironman savor victory
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham Ironmen
rebounded from a 2-0 loss to
Hanover Fieiday„night by
emerging from Sunday
afternoon's contest against
Clinton with a 10-5 win.
It was sweet revenge
following the Ironmen's loss
to the Mustangs earlier this
month by a lopsided 7-2
t score.
Kevin Coultes, with two
goals and two assists, and
Rob Willis, with two goals,
helped pace the Ironmen to
the win.
The Ironmen started fast,
making their own luck, with
the bounce of the puck
coming their way. Paul
Robinson opened the
scoring. Skating down left
wing, he zeroed in on the
goal, maneuvering around a
defender and deking the
netminder to the ice before
dumping the puck into the
vacated net.
The Mustangs tied the
score just over a minute
later as Randy Marriage
beat Schistad on a shot from
the goalmouth that eluded
the glove of the Wingham
netminder.
Coultes restored the lead,
converting a Jeff Espansen
pass at the goalmouth behind
Chris Ladd. Steve Nicholson
made it 3-1 as Tim Brown
dumped the puck out of his
own zone. Schistad outlegged
a defender and drilled a shot
which Ladd blocked. The
rebound ended up on
Nicholson's stick and he
fired it home.
Rob Willis upped the lead
as he kept a Mustang
clearing attempt inside the
line. His poinVshot found the
mesh behind Ladd, making it
4-1. Rick Scrimgeour scored
a shorthanded goal, drilling
one from the right face-off
circle and beating Ladd high
over the glove side shoulder.
Dave Montgomery had
lady luck on his side as his
shot from 30 feet out hit a
defender's stick, flew 30 feet
above the ice, dropped in
front of the Clinton goal and
bounced past the surprised
netminder.
Marriage potted his
second goal with just under a
minute left, making it 6-2 for
the Ironmen after the
opening frame.
The Ironmen outscored
their opponents 3-2 in the
second period to build a 9-4
lead, with Cameron, Coultes
and Paul Irwin connecting
for the home side while Brad
Armstrong and Jamie
Mahler responded for the
visitors.
The final stanza saw the
two clubs exchange goals,
with Willis rounding out the
Ironmen offensive effort
while Dean Armstrong
answered for the Mustangs.
The Ironmen will take on
the Bears at Port Elgin
Friday night, then return
home to host the Walkerton
Black Hawks Sunday af-
ternoon at 2:30. A $36 prize
was won in the 50-50 draw.
SCHISTAD SPARKLES
IN LOSS TO HANOVER
The Hanover Barons
remained undefeated with a
record of 12 wins in as many
starts on the OHA Junior C
circuit following a decisive 2-
0 victory on home ice Friday
night.
It was a convincing win
despite the heroics of
Wingham netminder Rob
Schistad. He was brilliant in
goal, keeping his teammates
in the game despite a lop-
sided edge in shots on goal
and territorial possession by
the Barons.
Schistad was superb in
making 38 saves on 40 shots,
an effort which would have
been enough to give the
Ironmen a win against any
other club in the league.
However the Wingham of-
fence suffered from a
smothering "Baron defence
which allowed them but 16
shots throughout the contest,
few of which were serious
scoring threats.
The Ironmen had less than
a small handful of scoring
drives. Brett Cameron was
stymied at the goalmouth as
Scott White blocked a back-
hand shot when Cameron
broke in alone. Another
breakaway was nullified
when Tim Brown lost his
footing at the Baron blueline
with two defenders in pur-
suit.
After a scoreless first
period, the Barons took the
lead on a wicked shot by
Paul Nixon from the left
face-off circle, Schistad
having no chance on the
drive.
The Barons made it 2-0
with less than eight minutes
remaining in the game on a
blast from just inside the
blueline. Schistad partially
smothered the drive with his
pads, but the puck escaped
and dribbled into the net
behind him.
Kinsmen Bantams go
two -for -two at tourney
The Wingham Kinsmen
Bantams traveled to Sutton
last weekend to take part in
the "Mr. Ed” Tournament.
Through hard work and
determination the local lads
went two for two, defeating
Uxbridge and. Oshawa.
Wingham met the Ux-
bridge Bantam team last
Saturday evening in their
best game of the season thus
far. There was excellent end-
to-end play and full team
participation on both sides.
A good example of this
participation occurred when
Wingham goalie Murray
Foxton earned his first assist
of the season on Corey
McKee's goal in the second
period.
It was an action -packed
game that saw Bill Kinahan
tie the score with 16 seconds
left in the third on a pass
from Dave Heinmiller. At
the end of the first overtime
period, the score was still 4-
4, but in the second overtime
period, tournament' rules
called for the removal of
both goalies.
Each team skated full
force to successfully keep
the puck out of their
respective ends. However
with 52 seconds left and a
Wingham player in the
penalty box, Paul Brophy
scored unassisted for
Wingham to win the game.
Legion Peewees
play well at tourney
The Wingham Legion Pee-
Wees traveled to Norwich
last weekend to compete in a
tournament. Although the
boys did not come home with
the silverware, they played
three excellent games of
hockey and thoroughly
enjoyed themselves. The
boys finished the tournament
as runners-up on the con-
solation side.
WAINFLEET 3,
WINGHAM 3
Last Friday evening, the
Legion team met with a very
determined Wainfleet club.
Both teams played a very
exciting brand of hockey.
At the end of regulation
time the score was tied at
three -all and the game went
into overtime.
Wingham had a few good
scoring chances, . but just
could not put it past the
Wainfleet goaltender. A
second period of overtime
was necessary and both
teams failed to score again.
In the end 'the game was
' awarded to Wainfleet on
shots -on -goal, moving the
locals to the consolation side
against Lambeth.
Coach Bill Brown said he
felt the Wingham boys
played an excellent game
and should be proud of their
efforts. Goal scorers were
Scott Neil, Rob MacKay and
David McKee with assists
going to Jeff McKee with two
and Rob Harrison, MacKay
and Mike Elmslie with
singles
Jeff McKee was voted the
most valuable player on the
Wingham team. Bill
McGrath came into the
game with only two minutes
left as Andrew Mann had
been injured. Both goalies
played very well.
WINGHAM 2, LAMBETH 1
Wingham certainly was up
for this game and came out
skating hard.
Lambeth scored the first
goal of the game, but Jeff
McKee tied the .score mid-
way through the first period,
assisted by Neil.
McKee scored again in the
second, assisted by MacKay.
There was no scoring for
the remainder of the game.
The fans certainly were
treated to a fine exhibition of
hockey as both teams had
opportunities to score but
were shut down by excellent
goaltending.
McGrath won the most
valuable player title for the
Wingham squad. Steve
Michie was injured later in
the game but was back at the
blueline Sunday working as
hard as ever.
Congratulations Steve, your
example as a captain is
encouraging for the rest of
the team.
PORT DOVER 3,
WINGHAM 0
Both teams once again
played excellent hockey.
Trainer Rudy Bloemberg
said he felt they gave it all
they had and were beaten by
a superior team.
The local lads would
certainly like another crack
at Port Dover and said they
felt theyycould possibly turn
the score around if given the
. chance.
All of the boys and the
coaches deserve a great deal
of credit for the fine effort
they put forth. They
represented the Wingham
Minor Hockey Association .
well.
Goaltending duties in the
final game of the tournament
were shared by Mann and
McGrath. David McKee was
named Wingham's most
valuable player.
Foxton earned the most
valuable player distinction
for his outstanding play in.
the Wingham nets.
McKee scored three of the
Wingham markers, while
Kinahan and Brophy added
singles. Assists went to Chris
Michie with two, Brett
Martin, Heinmiller, i{i'naliah
and Foxton with singles.
Both teams shook hands
and congratulated each
other on a superb game
which drew a number of
spectators back to the arena.
Sunday's match was a far
different story. It was one of
the roughest the team ever
has played, however, in the
face of much physical abuse
and unsportsmanlike con-
duct, the Wingham team
members kept their cool and
continued to play hockey for
the fans, giving them a 2-0
win over Oshawa.
Brophy scored, assisted by
Terry Daer and Rick Leach-
man, and Martin added
Wingham's second goal,
assisted by McKee and
Kinahan.
Foxton again was named
most valuable player as he
continued his top-notch play
in the Wingham goal. The
entire, team is to be
congratulated for its ex-
cellent play and wished good
luck in the championship
game against Beaverton this
Sunday.
After a break for
examinations, the team
resumes regular play
against Seaforth" this
Tuesday.

Optimist Tykes have
first win of the season
The Wingham Optimist
Tykes had their first win of
the season with a convincing
13-2 victory over Teeswater
on Saturday, Nov. 17.
A small defensive error at
centre ice allowed Tees -
water's Billy Henry to open
the scoring in the first
period. This -didn't slow down
the Wingham lads as Jeremy
Brown scored 30 seconds
later for Wingham.
The Optimist Tykes put
nine unanswered behind the
Teeswater netminder. Brett
Sangster scored twice in the
first, unassisted, and Brown
scored his second of the
game before the first period
ended.
The second period saw
four more goals: Jamie
MacKay from Travis Baier;
Sangster` from Jason Evans;
Sangster assisted by Steven
Anger; MacKay, assisted by
Brown.
The third period saw no
letting up, as Wingham
scored five more goals. The
goals went to Sangster,
assisted by Anger. Baler
scored next, assisted by
MacKay.
Teeswater's Henry found
the back of Wingham's net at,
1:02.

up again with Sangster
scoring, assisted by Evans.
MacKay ended the scoring
in the game, assisted by
Baier.
Lucky devils climb to top
qf Blyth broomball league
This season the Lucky
Devils have moved to the
Blyth Broomball League
from Teeswater. Last week
the Devils made another
move and that was into sole
possesion of first place in the
Blyth loop.
The Devils have played
seven games so far this
season and are the only
undefeated team with a
record of seven wins and no
losses. In those seven games
the Lucky Devils have
outscored their opponents by
a margin of 41 to two and
have three of the top four
scorers in the league on their
squad.
Last Tuesday night the
Devils took on the Goderich
Oarsmen and posted their
sixth straight shutout of the
season with a 5-0 victory.
Albert Forsyth and John
Beadle both had a goal and
an assist to •lead the Devils
and single goals went to
Brad Johnston, Wayne
Carter and Donnie Carter,
while Wayne Saunders and
Rick Louthier picked up one
assist each.
Last Thursday evening

edge the Lanesville Lords 3-2
in overtime. The Lords took
a 2-0 lead in the first period
on two goals by Steve
Howard, with Nic Beyer-
sbergen assisting on both
tallies.

ond period the Devils tied the
game with two goals within
TYKE TIPS—Without

This game was a big boost
for the Wingham boys. Their

the Wingham arena at 2 p.m.
when they host Brussels.
Legion PeeWees
down Mitchell 4-3
The Wingham Legion Pee-
Wees hosted Mitchell last
Tuesday and came away
with a narrow 4-3 win.
Mitchell played a much -
improved game from the
first time the two teams met
earlier this year and
Wingham won 8-3. On the
other hand the Wingham
squad did not play as well as
they can and a hustling
Mitchell club almost handed
Wingham their first loss of
the season.
Bloemberg, Currie, Michie
and Heinmiller continue to
play well on defence and Bill
McGrath played a strong
game in goal.
Jeff McKee did all the
scoring, netting four goals.
He scored a pair late in the
game to give Wingham the 4-
3 edge.
Assists went to MacKay
with three, Neil with two,
