Critics who panned the
sseven-hour miniseries,
"Ellis Island", were being a
little hard on those involved
in the production. Shown last
week on Channel 11, the
series told the story of four
immigrants. who 'came to
America at the turn of the
century, looking for a better
life. Certainly, for many
immigrants the future was
-not rosy and the series may
not have told it like it was, as
charged by some critics, but
there were indeed some good
stories that carhe out of that
era:There were indeed some
immigrants that became
successfulin their new
homeland and built new lives
for themselves and their
families.
The series begins with the
horror of the Russian
revolution at the beginning
of this century. From there,
it traces the lives of four
immigrants, one escaped -
from the revolution, a young
man from Italy anxious to=
run away from the proverty
and routine of a life of ser-
vitude, and two Irish sisters,
one of them running away
from the law, who along the
way join the hundreds who
leave their homelands to
come to America. What is
especially enthralling is not
so much how the four
become entrenched in
various jobs and with
several different kinds of
'people, but the way their
lives intertwine throughout
the years. We can all relate
to this, for how many times
do our lives cross the paths
of those we have known in
years gone by and realize
that, without our knowledge,
the events and'Sittuations of
our live were planned and
designed to make these
meetings take place.
Ironically, "Ellis Island"
caused the paths of two of its
stars to cross, with the
coming together of actor
Richard Burton and his
daughter Kate to play father
and daughter. Burton does
not have a large role and
comes across as what he was
- a tired old man. Only a
few weeks after he com-
pleted finning of this
production, he died of a brain
hemorrhage.
Kate does an admirable
job in her role but real
dramatic honors go to Greg
Martyn who plays the Italian
immigrant and the two Irish
sisters, Alice Krige and Judi
Bowker, the ' latter a
beautiful girl who is not seen
as often as she should be.
The Russian immigrant was
played well by Peter
Riegert.
Many acknowledged the
fact .that this role was an
unfitting one for Burton to
leave in the memories of his
fans. Well, the fact is that
while "Ellis Island" may not
have been an historic drama,
it did have all the qualities of
a soap opera and is Burton
any different from the other
so-called legends, like Jane
Wyman and Bette Davis,
who have lent their 'talent to
this kind of production,
seemingly the entertainment
the majority of viewers want
these days? Besides, Burton
is ' surely to be better
remembered for his movie
role in "1984", for which he is
being .praised as being
posthumously honored as
next year's winner of the
Academy Award, a fete that
evaded him while he was
alive.
